Preventive measures ramped up as Nipah patient remains critical

The Hindu09-05-2025
The Health department has ramped up preventive measures in and around Valanchery after a 42-year-old woman tested positive for Nipah virus. The woman remains critical at a private hospital in Perinthalmanna.
A sample from a cat that died near the woman's house will be sent to the National Institute of High Security Animal Diseases (NIHSAD) lab in Bhopal for Nipah virus testing.
Minister for Health Veena George has directed District Collector V.R. Vinod and District Medical Officer R. Renuka to initiate action under the Disaster Management Act and Public Health Act against people who refuse to share information with health officials.
Ms. George said here on Friday that 49 people on the contact list of the Nipah affected woman were put under observation. Five of them have been isolated at Government Medical College Hospital at Manjeri, and a nurse from Ernakulam district who works at a Perinthalmanna hospital is also under isolation. However, all of them tested negative on Friday, providing relief to the State health team.
As many as 12 of those under observation are the woman's close relatives. Ms. George said that 45 people, including the 12 family members, were in high risk category.
Three of them were from the primary health centre at Valanchery, one from a doctor's clinic at Valanchery, 25 at the Perinthalmanna hospital, two from two laboratories at Valanchery and two from a medical shop at Valanchery. Four people in low risk category too are under observation, said the Minister.
The district administration has made masks mandatory in places where people gather. The Health department has released a route map of the Nipah-affected woman's movements starting from April 25, when she developed fever.
The Minister said that the Ente Keralam show being held at Kottakkunnu, Malappuram, would continue under strict guidelines. But the programmes of Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan and Sports Minister V. Abdurahman to be held on May 12 and 10 respectively have been postponed.
The Minister reviewed the situation at a meeting of officials and people's representatives at the Collectorate here on Friday. MLAs P. Ubaidullah, Abdul Hameed, Najeeb Kanthapuram and K.P.A. Majeed attended the meeting. MLAs Abid Husain Thangal, Kurukkoli Moideen and U.A. Latheef attended it in online mode.
Additional Chief Secretary (Health) Rajan N. Khobragade, District Collector V.R. Vinod, National Health Mission State director Vinay Goyal, Health department additional director K.P. Reetha, Disaster Management Deputy Collector Swati Chandramohan, and District Medical Officer R. Renuka were among those who attended the meeting.

BSL-3 lab at National Institute of Virology Kerala unit in Alappuzha ready, awaits certification

The establishment of a Biosafety Level-3 (BSL-3) laboratory at the National Institute of Virology (NIV) Kerala unit, at Kuravanthodu in Alappuzha, has been completed. Officials said the laboratory would be made operational after it receives certification from the Department of Biotechnology under the Union government. Once functional, the facility will enable Nipah virus testing and final confirmation within the State. Currently, samples should be sent to NIV Pune for final confirmation. 'The BSL-3 lab will become operational soon. The trial run commenced three weeks ago and will continue for three months. Once the trial is complete, we will apply for certification from the Department of Biotechnology. After certification, the lab will be able to conduct diagnostic testing and research for various viral diseases, including Nipah. It can also conduct diagnostics, but not research, on Risk Group 4 pathogens,' said an official. The National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) classifies laboratories into different categories from BSL 1 to 4 based on a combination of laboratory practices, safety equipment, and facilities. A BSL-3 lab is a high-containment facility intended for the testing and research of highly pathogenic and infectious agents. These labs include specialised safety systems and engineering controls. The NIV Kerala unit, functioning under the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), was initially established as a BSL-2 facility in February 2008. It operated with limited infrastructure at the Government Medical College Hospital, Alappuzha, until late 2022, when it was relocated to a newly constructed permanent facility in Kuravanthodu. Prime Minister Narendra Modi virtually inaugurated the new facility in Februray 2024. At present, the unit undertakes research on various locally prevalent viral diseases, focusing on epidemiological, virological, immunological, entomological and socio-behavioural aspects. Notably, the NIV Kerala unit was among the first four laboratories in India, apart from NIV Pune, the apex institution, to be designated as a State nodal laboratory for COVID-19 testing at the onset of the pandemic.

Kerala: Six districts on alert after man tests positive for Nipah virus after his death in Palakkad

Six districts in Kerala have been put on alert after a 58-year-old man from Palakkad tested positive for the Nipah virus after he died on Saturday, ANI reported. This is the second case reported in the district. The man from Kumaramputhur near Mannarkkad in Palakkad tested positive for the virus after he died at a private hospital in Malappuram district's Perinthalmanna, The Hindu reported. He was being treated at the hospital for a fever. The virus was detected through tests conducted at the Manjeri Medical College in Malappuram, The New Indian Express reported. The samples have been sent to the Pune's National Institute of Virology in keeping with the standard protocol for confirmation. This was the second Nipah-related death in Kerala in recent weeks. An 18-year-old woman from Malappuram died from the infection on July 1, while another patient from Palakkad was hospitalised. On Sunday, state Health Minister Veena George said that an alert had been issued to hospitals in Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Wayanad and Thrissur districts, ANI reported. George said that a contact list had been prepared of the 46 persons who had interacted with the man over the past three weeks, along with a route map, The Hindu reported. She added that both were awaiting release pending confirmation from the National Institute of Virology. The minister said that fieldwork, including fever surveillance and door-to-door visits by health workers to provide guidance on precautions against the virus, were being conducted in Kumaramputhur. 'We will bolster our fight against Nipah by strengthening the health teams involved in it and intensifying preventive measures as soon as we get the final confirmation from NIV, Pune,' The Hindu quoted George as saying. With the 46 contacts of the latest case, 543 persons across the state were currently under observation for the virus, the newspaper reported. At least 208 of them are in Malappuram, 219 are in Palakkad, 114 in Kozhikode and two in Ernakulam. The Nipah virus is a ' zoonotic illness ' transferred from animals such as pigs and fruit bats to humans. The virus can also be caught through human-to-human transmission. It causes fever and cold-like symptoms in patients. The infection can also cause encephalitis, which is the inflammation of the brain, and myocarditis, or the inflammation of the heart, in some cases.
