Five arrested in raid on cockfighting gang, RM3.28mil seized

KOTA KINABALU: Police have dismantled an illegal cockfighting gang involving Philippines-bred fighting cocks in Sabah's eastern district of Tawau.
The operation involved two separate raids with total seizures amounting to RM3.28mil.
Bukit Aman Internal Security and Public Order Department director Datuk Seri Azmi Abu Kassim said four foreign nationals and a local man, aged between 31 and 57, were arrested and 622 fighting cocks seized.
Led by the department's Wildlife Crime Bureau/Special Investigation Intelligence, the raid was carried out at 2.30pm under the Integrated Khazanah operation in Kampung Apas Parit and Kampung Membalua.
Officers from the Tawau District Police Headquarters, Tawau's Battalion 14 of the General Operations Force and enforcement personnel from the Veterinary Services Department Tawau branch were also involved.
Azmi said the first raid took place at a house in Kampung Apas Parit, Jalan Apas Parit, and led to the arrest of four men, two Indonesians and two Filipinos, aged between 31 and 52.
'A total of 470 fighting cocks were found at the premises, along with 40 cockfighting blades, 180 containers of vitamins, and 500 specially-designed cages used for the birds,' he said in a statement on Sunday (July 20).
The second raid was at Kampung Membalua off Jalan Apas, resulting in the arrest of a 57-year-old local man, along with the seizure of 152 live fighting cocks, also believed to have been imported illegally.
All five individuals are being investigated under Section 15(1) of the Animal Enactment 2015 for the possession of animals without a licence.
The foreign nationals are also being probed under the Immigration Act 1959/63 for not possessing valid travel documents and working without permits.
They are also being investigated under Section 6 of the Dangerous Weapons Act 1958 for the possession of sharp blades suspected to be used for cockfighting purposes.
'This operation is part of ongoing efforts to combat all forms of illegal cockfighting and gambling activities in the state,' said Azmi.

Indonesian police arrest 44 people suspected of starting forest fires

Forest and peat fires are an annual problem in Indonesia that strain relations with neighboring countries. In recent years, smoke from the fires has blanketed parts of Indonesia, Singapore, Malaysia and southern Thailand. The fires are often started illegally by plantation owners or traditional farmers to clear land for planting, said Suharyanto, who heads the National Disaster Mitigation Agency, or BNPB, in a statement on Wednesday. "The forest fires are not caused only by drought, but also by humans,' said Suharyanto, who like many Indonesians uses only a single name. "Hopefully these arrests will serve as a deterrent to the public to stop setting fires to clear land.' Police on Tuesday presented the suspects, including a woman, at the news conference in Pekanbaru, the capital of Riau province. They were handcuffed and wearing orange prison uniforms. Those arrested could be prosecuted under an environmental protection law that provides for a maximum 10-year prison sentence for setting fires to clear land, Suharyanto said. He urged people to be pro-active in the government campaign to stop human-caused blazes and report anyone setting fires to clear land. A number of areas in Riau province were still covered by thick haze, where Rokan Hilir and Rokan Hulu districts were the worst hit areas by fires that burned about 500 hectares (1,235 acres), resulting in heavy haze that reduced visibility to less than one kilometer (less than half a mile). The government has stepped up its fire responses by spreading tons of salt on clouds to induce artificial rain in Riau since Tuesday, which will continue until July 25, Suharyanto said. Tuesday's arrests were not the first. In 2019 Indonesian police arrested 230 people linked to forest fires. Forest fires on Sumatra and Borneo islands often break out during dry spells, smothering parts of nearby Singapore and Malaysia in haze. In 2023, Indonesia which often sends apologies to its neighbors over the haze, denied that its fires were blanketing Malaysia with pollution. - AP

[Watch] Thai Tourist Scammed By 'Photographer' At KLCC, Charged RM800 For 43 Photos

Subscribe to our FREE A Thai female tourist was allegedly scammed by a man posing as a photographer at the Petronas Twin Towers (KLCC), who initially quoted RM20 per person for photos but later demanded RM800 for 43 pictures. The tourist and her friend were taking selfies at KLCC when poor lighting made their photos turn out badly. A local man claiming to be a photographer approached them, offering to take professional photos for RM20 per person. He said it was RM20 per person. I asked him multiple times before we started – is it RM20 for both of us, or RM20 each? 'When we reached the photo spot, he assured me it was RM20 per person. But by then, the shoot had already begun,' the tourist said on social media. The Scam Unfolds After the photo session ended, the man began calculating charges per photo instead of per person. Using a calculator, he multiplied RM20 by 43 photos taken, demanding over 6,000 Thai baht (approximately RM787). We originally agreed on RM20 per person, but then he said it was RM20 per photo. The man insisted she buy all photos and refused to let her select only a few. When she refused to pay, he became abusive and accused her of wasting his time. Public Response and Ongoing Concerns The incident led to outrage on social media, with many Malaysians apologising for the scammer's behaviour. 'We Malaysians deeply regret what you experienced. Usually this kind of fraudulent behaviour is not done by locals, but mostly by some Indonesians working here,' one comment read. Others called for police action: 'Police should investigate this photographer scam targeting tourists at the Twin Towers area.' Some noted that authorities have repeatedly cracked down on such activities at the location, but the scammers keep returning. Photographers near KLCC have faced criticism on social media for alleged harassment, while they defend their services as helpful and respectful for capturing tourist memories. The original Instagram post detailing the incident has since been taken down, but some media outlets managed to repost the video before its removal.
