Anwar draws ‘red line' on US tariff talks, says pro-Bumiputera policy not up for negotiation
He said that although investment and trade with the US are significant, Malaysia has a 'red line' in negotiations — namely the Bumiputera policy — which must not be compromised, even if it is perceived as 'discriminatory' by external parties.
In addition, Anwar, who is also the finance minister, stated that procurement and opportunities for local companies must also be protected in negotiations with the US.
He added that Malaysia's approach is more thorough and firm in order to safeguard national interests, while continuing to strengthen trade relations with other countries, including China and ASEAN, as a step to expand market access.
'That is our red line in negotiations (on tariffs), which is why our approach is more careful and firm.
'We must continue to trade and engage well with all countries, but no country should be allowed to impose conditions that pressure us,' he said during a monthly meeting with staff of the Prime Minister's Department (JPM) here today.
Anwar said that his close ties with world leaders, particularly in Brazil and Egypt, have opened up strategic economic opportunities for Malaysia to strengthen its economic resilience.
He stated that as a result of his good relationship with Brazilian President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, Petronas was invited to participate in oil exploration and production in the country, while Yinson Holdings is involved in the construction of oil and gas vessels for the Brazilian and Peruvian markets.
'The involvement of Malaysian companies was made easier due to our strong friendship. In addition to increased trade with BRICS countries (the economic bloc comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa), Malaysia is opening new networks for the country's survival, (as we) cannot rely on just one country,' he said.
In Egypt, Anwar said his relationship with President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi also yielded positive results, with the Egyptian government granting Proton the opportunity to make the country a production hub for the north African market. This has also contributed to a 34 per cent increase in trade with Egypt within a year. — Bernama

A search of the premises uncovered hundreds of condoms and several boxes of HIV medication stored in a special room believed to be used as a storage place by the organisers. The Malaysian AIDS Council said it had conducted an outreach session on June 17 in Kemumin to engage with high-risk communities as part of HIV prevention efforts before the police raid. The programme, which ran from 8pm to 2am, was part of a strategic approach by the health ministry to deliver more inclusive and community-centred HIV treatment services.

Anwar's constitutional reference appeal for case management tomorrow
Anwar Ibrahim wants the Court of Appeal to refer eight legal questions, which he said arise from a civil suit brought by former research assistant Yusoff Rawther, to the Federal Court for determination. PUTRAJAYA : The Court of Appeal has brought forward case management of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim's constitutional reference appeal to tomorrow, with a view to disposing of the case on an expedited basis. Anwar is appealing against the High Court's refusal to refer eight legal questions – which he claims arise from a civil suit brought by former research assistant Yusoff Rawther – to the Federal Court for determination. An e-mail sent out by senior assistant registrar Ahmad Izuddin Fajri Fakrullah, sighted by FMT, said the case management was being brought forward as the appeals court bench had indicated this morning that an early hearing should be held. As such, Izuddin said case management, previously scheduled for Sept 2, has been brought forward to tomorrow. Lawyer Rafique Rashid Ali, appearing for Yusoff, who filed his suit in 2021 against Anwar over an alleged assault, confirmed the matter. 'The case management will be held online,' he said when contacted. Earlier today, a three-member bench chaired by Justice Ruzima Ghazali said the stay should be granted as Anwar had shown special circumstances. Ruzima, who sat with Justices Wong Kian Kheong and Lim Hock Leng, however, said parties were at liberty to apply for an early hearing date. On June 4, High Court Justice Roz Mawar Rozain dismissed Anwar's reference application and directed that the trial proceed on the seven days previously set between June 16 and June 25. In her decision, Roz Mawar said none of the questions posed in the application had crossed the threshold set out in Section 84 of the Courts of Judicature Act 1964 to justify a referral to the apex court. In a 21-page judgment, she said the application was misconceived as to the jurisdiction of the courts and based on speculative doctrines with no constitutional footing. On June 10, the Court of Appeal granted Anwar an interim stay pending today's hearing of the prime minister's stay application. The prime minister wants the apex court to determine whether Articles 5(1), 8(1), 39, 40 and 43 of the Federal Constitution grant him qualified immunity from the suit filed by Yusoff four years ago. Yusoff's suit relates to events which allegedly took place before Anwar took office on Nov 22, 2022. A grandson of the late Penang consumer advocate SM Mohamed Idris, Yusoff claims he was assaulted at Anwar's home in Segambut in October 2018. He is seeking general, special, aggravated and exemplary damages, as well as interest, costs and other relief deemed fit by the court. Anwar denies the claim and has filed a countersuit.

Liverpool to sign Hugo Ekitike in £69m deal: Reports
LONDON: Liverpool have agreed to sign Eintracht Frankfurt striker Hugo Ekitike in a deal worth an initial £69 million (US$92 million), according to reports on Monday. The Premier League champions switched their focus to Ekitike following Newcastle's refusal to sell Sweden striker Alexander Isak, who is valued at around £150 million by the Magpies. Newcastle and Manchester United were also interested in Ekitike, but Liverpool look set to win the race for one of Europe's hottest young stars. It is believed the Reds have agreed to pay a potential further £10 million in add-ons to sign the 23-year-old Frenchman, whose overall price tag could reach £79 million. Once the transfer is completed, Ekitike will link up with Arne Slot's side on their pre-season tour of Asia. Ekitike scored 22 goals in 48 games in all competitions for Frankfurt last season after joining the Bundesliga club from Paris Saint-Germain. He was an unused substitute during his side's pre-season friendly against FSV Frankfurt on Saturday, with Eintracht boss Dino Toppmoller admitting Ekitike's impending departure was "a bitter loss."
