I Tried All The "Back To The Future" Food At Universal Studios

Buzz Feed18 hours ago
Hello, friends, I'm Crystal, and I'm a big fan of Back to the Future, as well as trying wild, interesting, and new foods at theme parks. So, when I found out Universal Studios Hollywood currently has an entire menu of Back to the Future-themed food, I thought...this is heavy!
Now, some of the BTTF food was actually introduced during Universal's Fan Fest Nights. But the good news for anyone who couldn't make it to that limited event is that it's still available (with some NEW additions) as part of Universal's Mega Movie Summer!
Mega Movie Summer is basically Universal's celebration of some of their biggest properties, like Back to the Future, as well as Jurassic World, How to Train Your Dragon, Wicked, and also Jaws, which is celebrating its 50th anniversary! The celebration is going on now and continues daily through Sunday, August 10, and is all included in the regular price of admission. (It is NOT a separate ticket/event!)
Here's a look at the entire Back to the Future menu, which is available at Mel's Diner in the park:
Note: Some of the items on the menu are the "normal" Mel's Diner fare, so if you're looking for a regular ol' chili dog, they've got that, too!
Here's what I thought...
Flux Capacitor Patty Melt
Things started off really strong with the patty melt. I've never met a patty melt I didn't like, and this one is no exception. Do not be fooled by my unimpressive photo above! All the grilled aspects — the buttery bread, the onions, and the patty itself — were perfectly cooked. And I have to give them props for "branding" the top of the bun with a little Flux Capacitor logo, even if it was a LITTLE tough to make out, lol. I appreciate fun decorative details! 9.5/10
Doc Brown's Chicken Pot Pie
I'm actually really torn between this and the patty melt being my favorite dish. First of all, I love that it's kind of a joke/nod to the "Doc Brown's Chicken" restaurant that used to exist at Universal Studios. (Why would Doc Brown have a chicken restaurant?! The world may never know.) Next, the cheesy crumbles on top of the pot pie were a deliciously savory surprise, plus I loved that it was in the form of a radioactive/plutonium logo (more fun details!). Finally, the chicken pot pie itself was perfect. It had a nice, flaky, buttery top, succulent chicken, and savory fillings. What's not to like?! If I have one tiny complaint, it's that this dish is a little small for the price (considering it's almost the same price as the melts, which come with fries on the side). So, this probably isn't the best bang for your buck. BUT, if you love a good pot pie, this one is worth it. 9/10
Time Machine Pastrami Melt
Unsurprisingly, the pastrami melt was also super yummy. It had all the right elements — juicy pastrami meat, crunchy slaw, tangy Swiss cheese, and perfectly grilled bread. But if I had to pick between the melts, I'd go with the patty one ¯\_(ツ)_/¯. Much like the other details, the cute "88 mph" toothpick it came with was a fun touch! 8/10
Flux Capacitor (Drink)
This entertaining drink (which is non-alcoholic) comes with Sprite, passionfruit, and blue Curaçao syrup, and is very refreshing! But the REAL winner is the fact that it's served with dry ice, which makes it look like something Doc Brown would concoct in his lab. 7/10Note: There's also a "Wake Up Juice" cocktail on the menu, but because I'm not currently drinking alcohol, I didn't try it. But it looks great also (and, of course, LOVE the name)!
FYI, this one makes for a great video!
Time Traveler's Milk Shake
This milkshake was...A LOT. Like, it's super sweet. Despite the cute blue coloring, I was surprised the flavor was simply vanilla, but specifically like vanilla cupcake frosting flavor. So, if that's your jam, you will LOVE this. But, if you're not really into sweets, I'd prob give this a skip! 6/10
Finally, the Outatime Cookie
As far as cookies go, this isn't the GREATEST cookie I've ever had. It's basically a hard sugar cookie, and the frosting doesn't have a particular flavor...so taste-wise, not exactly noteworthy. BUT, let's be real, if you're getting this cookie, it's because it looks cool AF. And I reallllly love the design. 8/10
As I mentioned, this special Back to the Future menu is available at Universal Studios Hollywood as part of their Mega Movie Summer! And, FYI, if BTTF isn't your ~thing~, there's also fun food themed around Jaws, Jurassic World, and How to Train Your Dragon available throughout the park.
Oh, and be SURE to get a pic with the iconic GIANT SHARK from Jaws that's been reintroduced to the theme park for Mega Movie Summer! (Maybe you remember it from your childhood?!). Obsessed. And if you're lucky, you might get a chance to meet Captain Quint and Chief Brody, who are making their theme park debut!
Universal Mega Movie Summer is going on NOW through Sunday, August 10, and you can get your tickets at UniversalStudiosHollywood.com.

On 40th anniversary of ‘Back to the Future,' Allstate celebrates its role in creation of DeLorean time machine

On the 40th anniversary of the 'Back to the Future' movie premiere, Northbrook-based insurance giant Allstate is traveling back to the past to reveal its little-known role in developing the DeLorean, the futuristic but short-lived, gull-winged, stainless steel car that served as Doc Brown's time machine. Without Allstate, Marty McFly might never have left 1985 or perhaps he would have traveled back in time in a Buick, forever disrupting the space-time continuum of the seminal movie trilogy. 'The cars exist because of the partnership Allstate had with DeLorean,' said Sandee Lindorfer, vice president of auto claims for Allstate. In the words of Doc Brown, 'Great Scott!' 'Back to the Future' hit movie theaters on July 3, 1985. A customized 1981 DeLorean DMC-12, which took audiences on joyrides to 1955, 1885 and 2015 over the course of three films, was already relegated to the junkyard of automotive history by the time the movie premiered. In the mid-1970s, Allstate worked with John DeLorean, an automobile executive and engineer, who left GM to launch his own namesake vehicle. The insurance company invested a reported $500,000 in a safety car project, developing prototypes with advanced seatbelt restraints, airbags and improved bumpers. 'We sponsored three prototypes with the DeLorean-Allstate safety car agreement, and we brought one of the prototypes to Congress to show them what could be done around smaller vehicles being more safe and having better fuel economy,' Lindorfer said. One prototype evolved into the sleek DeLorean DMC-12, which went into limited but ill-timed production at a Northern Ireland factory during a recession in 1981, generating buzz but few sales. By 1982, the debt-ridden company was in bankruptcy and its founder in legal trouble, facing indictments on separate drug and fraud charges. John DeLorean was ultimately acquitted on both counts, but his car was seemingly no more than a flash in the pan. Three years later, the DeLorean was reborn as Doc Brown's time machine, and the rest is cinematic history. Initially, the time machine was envisioned as a refrigerator-like chamber that Doc Brown carried on the back of his truck. Then director Robert Zemeckis had the inspiration that the time machine should be mobile, and specifically chose the DeLorean for its futuristic design. 'The way I see it, if you're going to build a time machine into a car, why not do it with some style?' Doc Brown, played by Christopher Lloyd, explains in the movie. In the annals of 'Back to the Future' lore, a lot of similar nuggets have emerged since the film trilogy premiered. For example, the 1989 second installment predicted the Cubs would finally end their century-long World Series drought with a 2015 win over the fictional Miami Gators. The Cubs actually broke through in 2016, beating the Cleveland Indians, but the movie was pretty close. Also, the role of Marty McFly was initially given to Eric Stoltz, who participated in over a month of filming before he was replaced by Michael J. Fox, the more comedically gifted 'Family Ties' star. But Allstate's role in developing the car that begot the time machine and an enduring movie star remained buried in a dusty folder in the back of a corporate cabinet for decades. In 2019, an Allstate archivist found the mysterious DeLorean file and began exploring the mostly forgotten connection. Six years later, on the 40th anniversary of 'Back to the Future,' Allstate is finally ready to take a modest bow. On Tuesday, Allstate rented a pair of vintage DeLoreans to celebrate the movie, the car and the unlikely part the insurance company played in both. Tucked away in the back of an underground garage at Allstate's downsized Northbrook/Glenview headquarters, across the street from its former sprawling corporate campus, the vehicles were briefly on display for the media and a handful of executives. The cars, which included a stock 1981 DeLorean and a tricked-out version replicating the 'Back to the Future' time machine, were rented from an Orland Park company — DeLorean USA Rental — that leases the vehicles for parties and events. 'You can't drive it because the insurer doesn't allow it,' said Tom Sedor, who owns the cars and the rental company. The time machine, which includes a flux capacitor and a Mr. Fusion nuclear reactor in the back — replete with banana peel as fuel — is fully drivable, and the garage and adjacent parking lot offered enough room to get it up to the 88 mph threshold required to go back to the future. But Sedor, 57, who customized the movie mockup with a 3D printer and assorted parts from Menards and RockAuto, said the replica has yet to successfully make the time jump. 'Nothing happened, no sparks,' said Sedor. 'Everything drove normally. Actually, it's very, very impressive to drive.'

Husband slammed for asking this question at a kids birthday party: ‘I'm filled with rage'

Talk about being oblivious. Like many mothers, a Connecticut woman wanted nothing more than for her little girl's Cinderella-themed birthday party to be memorable and special. In order to do this, Courtney Davis spent countless weeks planning the princess party of her 4-year-old's dreams. She placed orders for things like custom-embroidered napkins, and she carefully lined table covers with lace trim. Talk about being detail-oriented. Davis — who is a mom of two — didn't just cater to her little girl. She made sure to put out a delicious spread of food and drinks for the adults. This mom worked hard for weeks to make her little girl's birthday party special. Monkey Business – Although most young tots don't notice these things, Davis told she goes above and beyond because 'It's my anxiety.' The key thing to note is that her hubby seemed to be barely involved in the planning of their daughter's birthday party. It wasn't until the actual day of the party — when everything was in its place, ready for guests and the birthday girl to arrive — that he asked if his hardworking wife needed help with anything. He also had the nerve to ask Davis: 'Did you get a cake?' Davis went above and beyond for the party — catering to not only her little girl, but adults as well. Oksana Kuzmina – Clearly, this man doesn't know his wife very well, or his head was in the clouds, not noticing all the behind-the-scenes work Davis did leading up to the party. The real kicker is that Davis innocently caught her husband's naive questions on camera when she was bringing her phone around the party to capture the final product she worked so hard on. She posted this humorous — maybe a little exasperating — video to Instagram with the caption, 'Thanks so much for asking,' and the floodgates opened with wives running to the comment section to share how their husbands are also oblivious at times or joke that they want to stay single forever. 'Reminds me of Christmas morning. Did you get presents for the kids lol.' 'Put all the husbands in a bag, shake it up, reach inside….. you'll get yours every time, cause they all the same.' 'I was scrolling Instagram to relax, but now I'm filled with rage thank you very much lol.' 'I was going to start dating again but never mind.' 'Single women are the happiest.' This isn't the first time moms are calling out men. A fed-up mom went viral for sharing why many women have low sex drives. 'Not an f—ing chance,' she said, after going through a calculation that consisted of eight hours of sleep, three full meals, helpful husband duties — and one too many toddler touches. 'We gotta find a way to add in how long the husband takes to poop,' joked one person in the comment section. 'Women in stem,' someone else wrote.

North Hollywood mural lauds Dodgers' Kiké Hernández ‘for standing up for what is right'

Dodgers utility player Kiké Hernández was not born and raised in Los Angeles. A North Hollywood mural seemingly inspired by the San Juan, Puerto Rico, native's stance on immigration sweeps shows that doesn't matter. Hernández began a June 14 Instagram post by stating, 'I may not be Born & Raised, but this city adopted me as one of their own.' Local artist Louie Palsino has cemented the second part of that statement in a new mural on the side of the Noho Tires & Wheels building on the 5600 block of Lankershim Blvd. It features Hernández's image surrounded by the words 'Born X Raised' and 'Los Angeles.' Hernández said plenty more in the post, which seems to have inspired Palsino. The two-time World Series champion expressed support for his adopted city's immigrants and dismay at how many of them were being treated in a series of sweeps by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. The sweeps in Los Angeles have sparked protests locally and elsewhere in the country. 'I am saddened and infuriated by what's happening in our country and our city,' Hernández wrote. 'Los Angeles and Dodger fans have welcomed me, supported me and shown me nothing but kindness and love. This is my second home. And I cannot stand to see our community being violated, profiled, abused and ripped apart. ALL people deserve to be treated with respect, dignity and human rights.' Under the name Sloe Motions, Palsino has painted a number of high-profile murals, including one in the Fashion District of Kobe and Gianna Bryant that was vandalized, restored, then vandalized again all within the last few months. He declined to discuss the Hernández mural for this story, instead directing The Times to a statement he posted about it on Instagram last week. 'Thank you @kikehndez for standing up for what is right and for Los Angeles,' Palsino wrote. 'this ain't a political post or anything to stir up any government agenda to divide us. this is just paying homage to standing up for what is right and a real over government.' Palsino painted the Hernández mural on a building that already featured two of his other Dodgers-themed pieces — one of legendary broadcaster Vin Scully on an adjoining wall and one of iconic Mexican pitcher Fernando Valenzuela on the gate in front of the garage's driveway When the gate is pulled open, a split image of Valenzuela and Hernandez is created. Hernández has been a Dodgers fan favorite since his first stint with the team in 2015-2020. In 2017, he hit three home runs, including a grand slam, in Game 5 of the National League Championship Series against the Chicago Cubs to help send the Dodgers to the World Series. He signed with the Boston Red Sox as a free agent after the Dodgers' 2020 World Series championship, but returned to L.A. in a July 2023 trade. Hernández hit .262 in 54 games with the Dodgers that season, helping him earn a one-year, $4-million contract for 2024. Last postseason, Hernández was a key member of another Dodgers championship team. He hit one of the Dodgers' two solo home runs in a 2-0 win against the San Diego Padres in the decisive Game 5 of the NL Division Series. He then contributed seven hits and four RBIs in the NLCS against the New York Mets and five hits against the New York Yankees in the 2024 World Series.
