Jayakwadi dam gates open after storage crosses 90%

Time of India3 days ago
Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar: For the first time since 1979, the Jayakwadi dam has started discharging water in July, as its storage capacity crossed the 90%-mark.
On Thursday, authorities opened a total of 18 gates by half-a-foot each, releasing 9,432 cusecs into the Godavari river.
The opening of the gates at Jayakwadi, one of Asia's largest dams with as many as 27 gates, drew large crowds who were eager to witness the unusual spectacle.
Security personnel were also present to ensure public safety and prevent people from getting too close to the surging water.
Before the discharge commenced, water resources minister Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil performed the traditional "jalpoojan" ceremony.
"Efforts will be made to divert 65 billion cubic feet of water from the Godavari, which would otherwise flow into the sea, to water-deficient regions. This initiative aligns with the CM's vision of making Maharashtra drought-free," he said.
Following the water release, the administration has issued an alert to the villages situated along the banks of Godavari, advising them to remain vigilant.
During the function, Shiv Sena MLA Vilas Bhumre demanded that the dam's water be supplied through a closed-pipeline system to prevent wastage.
MLAs Ramesh Bornare, Himmat Udan, Vitthalrao Langhe and Vijaysingh Pandit, along with Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar district collector Dilip Swami, water resources department executive director Santosh Tirmanwar, superintendent engineers Prashant Sant and Samadhan Sabbinwar were also present.
Jayakwadi currently holds 95.15 TMC of water, with the storage level at 90.13%. On Thursday, the water level in the reservoir stood at 1,520.18 ft, with an inflow of 16,230 cusecs.
"The discharge is being carried out as per the dam's reservoir regulation guidelines," said the authorities.
Vikhe-Patil said govt is encouraging renewable energy projects such as a 12 MW hydropower unit and floating solar panels on the dam. He also announced Rs150 crore for the Brahm Gavhan lift irrigation scheme, promising its completion within a year. "Desilting of the Jayakwadi dam to enhance its storage capacity will also be taken up," he said.

As Bordikar, Shirsat stoke row, CM jumps to their defence: Ministers sometimes speak jokingly

EVEN as two more state ministers landed in controversy in the last two days, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, who last week had warned ministers against making controversial statements, on Sunday defended his cabinet colleagues. As videos of the two ministers — Sanjay Shirsat from Eknath Shinde-led Shiv Sena and Meghna Bordikar from BJP — surfaced, Fadnavis jumped to their defence, stating ministers in their speeches sometimes speak jokingly. 'If we make an issue out of everything, it won't be appropriate,' the chief minister said. As for Social Justice Minister Sanjay Shirsat, Fadnavis said, 'I don't think what Shirsat said is wrong.' Regarding Bordikar, Fadnavis said, 'I have spoken to her and she told me that the media has not shown her complete statement. I will be discussing her statement with her.' On Saturday, Shirsat found himself in the eye of another storm after making a public statement at an event that people should ask for any amount, he as a minister will sanction it. The money, he said, 'is not going from our father's pockets'. The opposition quickly slammed him, calling his attitude toward public money as a ''cavalier'. Shirsat, however, defended his statement. 'I was trying to encourage people to take funds under various welfare schemes of the government. What I meant to say was that money belonged to the people and it was not anyone's wealth,' he said. Last month, a video surfaced showing Shirsat lying on his bed at his home with an unzipped bag of cash on the floor. On Sunday, Minister of State Meghna Bordikar triggered a row after a video showing her allegedly threatening to slap a gram sevak if he fails to bring beneficiaries of a government scheme to a public function surfaced. Opposition Nationalist Congress Party (SP) MLA Rohit Pawar Saturday shared the video, shot during an event at Jintur in the Parbhani district, on social media. In a post on X, written in Marathi, Pawar said, 'A minister has threatened to slap a gram sevak if he failed to bring the beneficiary of a government scheme to the government function. Who has given her the power to threaten the gram sevak?' Taking a jibe at CM Fadnavis, Pawar added, 'What kind of a minister have you succeeded in picking? With such ministers, it is an affront not just your Cabinet but the state of Maharashtra.' Reacting to the video of her speech, Bordikar, the two-time MLA from Jintur, said, 'I expressed my anger at a function yesterday. At the function, zilla parishad officials were present. This particular gram sevak was not taking the welfare schemes being implemented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to the poor people. He was creating impediments.' She said women labourers had informed her that the gram sevak was not giving them government funds and telling them to repeatedly go to the sarpanch's house. 'I lost cool because the women labourers had complained to me about the harassment from the gram sevak,' said Bordikar, who is the Minister of State for Public Health, Water Supply and Sanitation, Energy, Women and Child Development, and Public Works (Public Undertakings). She is also the Guardian Minister of the Parbhani district. Hitting back at Pawar and the Opposition, she said, 'The video was edited and what I said before making the statement and after has not been shown.' The Sena (UBT) said the Chief Minister and his government has become helpless because of the 'alliance dharma'. 'I have never seen a chief minister who is so helpless. No one can seek any answer from anyone in his cabinet,' Uddhav Thackeray said, adding that his party will state state-wide protests against corruption of Fadnavis ministers. Sena (UBT) leader Aditya Thackeray in a tweet took a jibe at the Chief Minister said, 'Because of the helplessness of the alliance dharma, Shirsat will soon get the finance ministry. Happy Friendship Day, CMO Maharashtra. When those who play Rummy get sports ministry, then because of the helplessness of alliance dharma, he will get finance ministry.' Earlier, eight ministers, including Shirsat, were in the line of fire and their possible exclusion had become imminent after they landed themselves in controversies. However, they got a reprieve with the Chief Minister warning them to behave properly or face action. Manoj More has been working with the Indian Express since 1992. In 10 years, nearly 200 two-wheeler riders had died in accidents due to the pathetic state of the road. The local cantonment board could not get the road redone as it lacked funds. The then PMC commissioner Pravin Pardeshi took the initiative, went out of his way and made the Khadki road by spending Rs 23 crore from JNNURM Funds. In the next 10 years after the road was made by the PMC, less than 10 citizens had died, effectively saving more than 100 lives. Manoj More's campaign against tree cutting on Pune-Mumbai highway in 1999 and Pune-Nashik highway in 2004 saved 2000 trees. During Covid, over 50 doctors were asked to pay Rs 30 lakh each for getting a job with PCMC. Political row erupts in Mahayuti over delayed Shantidoot Society redevelopment in Kalyan

Kalyan: A fierce political tug-of-war has broken out within the Mahayuti alliance over the long-pending redevelopment of Mhada's Shantidoot Society in Kalyan. The project, stalled for over a decade, has become a major flashpoint between BJP and Shiv Sena leaders. Former BJP MLA Narendra Pawar launched a hunger strike on Sunday alongside several affected residents, demanding that Mhada terminate its agreement with the project's builder, Tycoon Realty, and that a criminal case be registered against the developer for prolonged delays. "The people elected MLA Bhoir, not the builder. Why is he defending the builder in press conferences?" Pawar asked, accusing Shiv Sena MLA Vishwanath Bhoir of siding with the developer rather than the residents. In retaliation, Shiv Sena supporters staged a protest against Pawar outside the DCP office in Kalyan, accusing him of politicising the issue and potentially derailing the redevelopment process. Some residents, aligned with Shiv Sena, argued that Pawar's agitation may disrupt ongoing efforts to find a resolution and further delay construction. A meeting on Saturday, August 2, was attended by MLA Bhoir, Shiv Sena City President Ravi Patil, and former corporator Sanjay Patil. Bhoir stated that senior leaders, including Union finance minister Nirmala Sitharaman, chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, deputy chief minister Eknath Shinde, and minister Shambhuraj Desai, have taken note of the issue. He assured that a meeting with stakeholders would be convened after Mhada submits its report and promised a resolution soon. Bhoir criticised Pawar's hunger strike, saying, "The matter is already progressing. Creating unrest at this stage is counterproductive." He appealed to Pawar to withdraw his protest in the interest of residents of society. However, Pawar remained defiant. "Until an FIR is registered against the builder and Mhada replaces him—as demanded by the society committee—I will not call off my hunger strike," he declared. Ahead of civic polls, Maharashtra BJP chief stakes claim for KDMC mayor's post

Kalyan: The Kalyan-Dombivli Municipal Corporation (KDMC), long led by a Shiv Sena mayor, may soon witness a major political shift. With civic elections around the corner, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has formally staked its claim to the mayoral post, signalling growing friction within the ruling Mahayuti alliance. BJP's Maharashtra president and Dombivli MLA Ravindra Chavan on Sunday made a strong statement during a party induction event held in Kalyan. Chavan asserted that the BJP must lead KDMC to overcome the regional development challenges. "It is essential that the next mayor of KDMC comes from the BJP to ensure effective governance and rapid progress," Chavan said. The event also marked the entry of prominent social worker Jatin Prajapati into the BJP, along with hundreds of his supporters from other political parties. Prajapati, who was active in Kalyan's civic and social circles for over two decades, is expected to boost BJP's grassroots strength in the city. You Can Also Check: Mumbai AQI | Weather in Mumbai | Bank Holidays in Mumbai | Public Holidays in Mumbai Chavan further added that under the leadership of chief minister Devendra Fadnavis, Maharashtra is witnessing a strong wave of development, which is attracting leaders and social workers from other parties into the BJP fold. He urged the party cadre to work cohesively to make the entire Kalyan region a BJP stronghold. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Ask A Pro: "I'm 70 with $1.4M in IRAs. Shinde's son and Kalyan MP Dr Shrikant Shinde is also actively working to expand the party's presence in the region. With the BJP now aggressively mobilising at the local level under Chavan's leadership, and being the second-largest party in KDMC previously, a competitive showdown between the two alliance partners appears inevitable. The upcoming civic elections are likely to test the unity of the Mahayuti alliance in Kalyan-Dombivli.
