44 MLAs ready to form new govt in Manipur: Radheshyam
Imphal: Forty-four legislators are ready to form a new govt in the state, BJP legislator Thokchom Radheshyam told the media after meeting governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla here on Wednesday.

Manipur is under President's Rule since Feb after N Biren Singh resigned as the chief minister, amid criticism about his govt's handling of the ethnic clashes between the Meiteis and Kuki-Zos.
These 44 MLAs inlcude 30 of 37 BJP legislators, including Biren Singh, all six NPP legislators, all five NPF members, lone JD(U) member and two of three Independents. The seven BJP legislators belonging to the Kuki-Zo community are not part of this group.
The 60-member assembly at present has 59 MLAs, with one seat vacant due to the death of a legislator, N Kayisii, who represented Tadubi constituency. The opposition comprises five Congress members. Besdies, there are two members of Kuki People's Alliance and an Indpendent, all of them belonging to the Kuki-Zo community, in the opposition.
"We have conveyed this to the governor that as per the wishes of the people, forty-four MLAs are ready to form a govt.
We also discussed what solutions can be there for the issue," he said, adding, the governor expressed hope that he would initiate action in the best interests of the people.
Asked if they would stake a claim to form govt, he said, "The central leadership of the BJP will take the decision."
He revealed that speaker Th Satyabrata has 'individually' and 'jointly' met the 44 MLAs and that there is no one who opposes the formation of a new govt.

"We are ready to stake claim to form govt," Thokchom said.
"People had faced so many hardships. In the previous term, two years were lost due to COVID, and in this term, another two years have been lost due to the conflict,' he said.
Independent legislator Sapam Nishikanta Singh also told the media that 44 MLAs are ready to form a new govt. Nishikanta also met governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla along with nine other MLAs.
The development comes amid intense protests in the Imphal Valley over an order to conceal 'Manipur' written on the windshield of a govt bus by security forces.
Meitei groups have demanded an official apology from the governor over the incident that happened in Gwaltabi on May 20. They have also sought the resignation of the chief secretary, DGP, and security advisor.
Over 250 people have lost their lives since the ethnic strife broke out in the state in May 3, 2023.
Meitei groups maintain that the territorial integrity of the state is non-negotiable in any peace process, while the Kuki-Zo community asserts that the only solution to resolve the crisis is creating a separate administration for the hill districts where they live.

Bhubaneswar, June 28 (UNI) Coming down heavily on the BJP-led Odisha Government for the "chaos and glaring mismanagement" during the observance of Rath Yatra at Puri, the Opposition BJD today said Chief Minister Mohan Majhi and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan should own moral responsibility for the lapses and resign. The BJD also demanded the government must immediately disclose the official number of deceased and injured persons in the stampede that occurred. Stating that this year's Rath Yatra witnessed unprecedented disorder and mismanagement, BJD Vice President Pratap Jena said the spiritual emotions of millions of devotees who travelled from across the country and abroad to witness the divine Trinity have been deeply hurt. The government's assurance of a flawless Rath Yatra turned out to be "nothing more than an empty promise", he said. Pointing out the chaos in observance of the festival of the revered deities, he said Lord Jagannath's Nandighosha chariot did not move an inch until late evening, in "a serious breach of tradition". The chariots of Lord Balabhadra and Goddess Subhadra too failed to cross the Balagandi Chhak. Despite there being no provision to pull chariots after sunset, the chariot of Lord Jagannath was dragged forward by a few feet at 7:45 PM, only to symbolically fulfill ritual protocol — a move that hurt the religious sentiments of devotees, the senior BJD leader Jena said. Ironically both the Chief Administrator of Shree Jagannath Temple and Law Minister Prithviraj Harichandan shied away from the responsibility by casually saying, 'it happened according to the Lord's will.' BJD strongly condemned "such irresponsible statements" and reminded the state government that it is their duty to conduct the Rath Yatra with discipline and dignity. Despite holding valid passes, journalists were denied entry into the cordon zone and were manhandled by police personnel assigned to cordon duty. Nearly seven–eight senior journalists were injured during this incident, he rued. He also stated that even with a large police presence, devotees were left unsafe during the chariot pulling, and the traffic system completely collapsed. With over 1,000 injuries reported, at least eight individuals were admitted to ICU, and reports of two or more deaths have surfaced, he said. He demanded the state government must immediately disclose the official number of deceased and injured persons. BJD further blamed the government's reckless distribution of record-high cordon passes for the chaos. Approximately 10,000 cordon passes were issued this year, many of which were distributed through party workers. Shockingly, two ministers alone issued 6,000 passes, leading to uncontrolled crowds breaching the cordon, significantly delaying the chariot pulling. Before the Yatra began, during the Anasara period, there were reports that a few Modak which were offered to the Lord were stolen. Notably, during last year's Rath Yatra, Lord Balabhadra's idol had fallen during the Pahandi ceremony, an incident that emotionally affected devotees worldwide. Making full efforts: Biren Singh says BJP working to restore government in Manipur
Former Manipur Chief Minister N Biren Singh on Friday said that full-fledged efforts are in progress to reinstate a popular government in the state amid persistent political uncertainty and a strong public demand for peace and to the media after a crucial BJP meeting at Thambal Sanglen, chaired by BJP Manipur President A Sarda Devi, Biren Singh said that the BJP is committed to resolving the ongoing crisis. 'The BJP never criticises any political party.
