Kerala govt. announces mega market interventions to ease festival costs during Onam
The Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) will organise 10-day Onam mega fairs in all districts from August 26 and five-day fairs in all of the 140 Assembly constituencies from August 25. Mobile Onam markets will be organised in all constituencies, aimed at delivering foodgrains and essential commodities even in remote regions.
Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan will inaugurate the State-level Onam fair at Putharikandam Maidan in Thiruvananthapuram on August 25.
Addressing a media conference here on Thursday, Mr. Anil said Supplyco will offer rice and coconut oil at highly subsidised rates during the Onam season. While 8 kg of rice per ration card is presently being distributed at subsidy rates, an additional 20 kg of raw or parboiled rice will be made available at a special Onam price of ₹25/kg.
With coconut oil prices on the rise, Supplyco has negotiated new tenders and will distribute Sabari brand oil at both subsidised (₹349 per litre, ₹179 for 500 ml) and non-subsidised rates (₹429 per litre, ₹219 for 500 ml).
Coconut oil of other brands will also be sold below maximum retail price. Sunflower, palm and rice bran oil will also be available at Supplyco outlets.
Onam kits
The Minister also informed that over 6 lakh Onam kits, each containing 15 essential items packed in a cloth bag, will be distributed to AAY ration cardholders and welfare institutions between August 18 and September 2.
The Food and Civil Supplies Department has also reduced the prices of red cowpea and toor dal to ₹70/kg (from ₹75) and ₹93/kg (from ₹105) respectively. The quantity of subsidised chilli has been doubled to 1 kg per cardholder at ₹115.5/kg. All subsidised items, except coconut oil, are already available at Supplyco outlets.
Sabari products
Supplyco is all set to introduce five new Sabari brand products, viz., semiya and palada payasam mix, sugar, salt, and Palakkadan Matta 'vadi' and 'unda' rice varieties. These will be formally launched at Supplyco headquarters on August 18. Processed and packaged rice-based items like puttu and appam powders will also be sold at competitive prices.
According to Mr. Anil, Supplyco recorded ₹183 crore in sales last Onam season. This year, the agency has fixed a target of at least ₹250 crore.
Priority cards
The Minister also announced that 43,000 new families will receive priority ration cards before Onam. Online applications for new priority cards will open from September 16 to October 15.
Besides, ration cardholders across all categories will receive enhanced rice quotas (in addition to their existing allocations) during the festive season. AAY (yellow) card holders will receive additional 1 kg sugar, while PHH (pink) card holders will get additional 5 kg rice at a rate of ₹10.90/kg, NPS (blue) card holders an additional 10 kg rice at a rate of ₹10.90/kg, and NPNS (white) card holders will receive a total of 15 kg rice at a rate of ₹10.90/kg. All ration cardholders will receive their kerosene quotas as well.

Agriculture Dept. exploring option to supply coconut oil at lower rates through Supplyco: Minister
With coconut oil prices going through the roof, the Agriculture Department is planning to supply it at lower rates through the Kerala State Civil Supplies Corporation (Supplyco) during Onam, Agriculture Minister P. Prasad said. The department, along with the Kerala State Co-operative Apex Federation of Coconut Farmers Ltd (Kerafed), which markets the Kera brand coconut oil, is exploring options to supply it at affordable rates to the weaker sections of the society during the upcoming festival season, Mr. Prasad said, addressing a press conference here. The Agriculture Department is in talks with Supplyco in this regard, he said. Kerafed has already kicked off measures for coconut procurement at ₹1 higher than the market rates from farmer, Mr. Prasad said. This will serve to ensure the adequate supply of good quality coconut oil in the State, he said. The government decided to step in with a procurement plan, given the need to prevent the sale of adulterated coconut oil in the current situation, the Minister said.

Car dispatches to dealers subdued ahead of festivals
The sluggishness in the car industry was evident as wholesale deliveries in July, ahead of the festive season of Onam and Ganesh Chaturthi, were muted. Top makers, such as Tata Motors , Hyundai, Toyota and Honda, reported a decline in dispatches (year-on-year), with Maruti reporting flat numbers. Mahindra and Kia saw growth in numbers, but the overall mood of the industry remains subdued. Industry officials spoke of challenges in generating demand as geopolitical tensions, fears from US tariffs and job cuts in the IT sector keep consumer sentiments low. Maruti, the country's largest carmaker, said while demand condition was tough, the company expected revival during the festive period. 'The overall industry is not growing… (and) it's not a good sign,' Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing & sales), said. He added that affordability, especially of entry-level cars, remains a challenge and during the festival, company expected to see 'green shoots' building up. Hyundai, which saw a 10% decline in domestic sales, said there was 'some softness' in demand in recent months. '… we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and product offerings,' Tarun Garg, director & COO, said. Car companies are planning new launches to kick up demand and attract customers. Swedish luxury carmaker Volvo launched the next-gen version of its top-seller XC60 SUV at Rs 72 lakh (ex-showroom). MD Jyoti Malhotra said Volvo would consider bringing in plug-in hybrids to India if the tax structure gets conducive, and added that an FTA with the EU — on the lines of the India-UK trade deal — would help attract investments and new car models. The industry believes that while demand has been difficult so far, the festive season may see a turnaround. Companies are working on new model launches and offering discounts and incentives to push the numbers.

Retail sales were flat at about 328,000 vehicles last month. At the country's largest carmaker Maruti Suzuki , wholesale volumes were largely unchanged at 137,776 vehicles last month. Partho Banerjee, senior executive officer (marketing and sales) said while Maruti has seen an uptick in bookings ahead of the festive season, starting with Onam in Kerala, conversions are slow. 'Growth in rural markets which stood at about 10% last year, has now come down to 2-3%. In urban areas, with layoffs in the IT sector, buyers are cautious,' Banerjee said, adding, 'We have, however, seen an increase in bookings which is a positive sign.' 'With the advent of the festive season, as things stabilise, we expect the demand momentum to pick up,' said Banerjee. Maruti Suzuki has so far recorded a 10% increase in bookings in Kerala. Korean rival Hyundai Motor India too saw sales dip by 10% to 43,973 vehicles in July. Tarun Garg, chief operating officer, said, 'While the overall auto industry has seen some softness in recent months, we remain optimistic with the onset of the festive season and are fully geared up with robust supply and product offerings.' Meanwhile, Tata Motors saw passenger vehicle sales decline by 12% to 39,521 units last month. At Toyota Kirloskar Motor too, sales fell by 1.2% to 29,159 vehicles in July. Mahindra & Mahindra (M&M) and JSW MG Motor India were among the few to buck the sluggish industry trend, recording an increase in wholesale volumes in July. While sales at Mahindra climbed 20% to 49,871 vehicles, JSW MG posted a 46% surge to 6,678 vehicles. Nalinikanth Gollagunta, CEO (automotive division) at M&M said, 'Our SUV growth has been supported by the recent launch of XUV 3XO 'REVX' Series & the commencement of deliveries for Pack two variants of the BE 6 and XUV 9E models.' In the commercial vehicle segment, market leader Tata Motors posted a 4% sales growth at 26,432 units in July. Chennai-based Ashok Leyland recorded a similar 4% rise to 13,501 units while VE Commercial Vehicles' sales of Eicher branded trucks and buses grew 6% to 6,410 units. Two-wheeler sales remained healthy in the month under review. At TVS Motor Company , domestic two-wheeler sales increased 21% to 308,720 units in July. Royal Enfield reported a 25% growth at 76,254 units. In the farm equipment segment, market leader M&M sold 26,990 tractors last month, a 5% increase from a year earlier. 'This performance was driven by sustained land preparation activities, supported by robust cash flows in rural markets following the conclusion of Rabi crop harvesting," said Veejay Nakra, president (farm equipment business) at M&M. 'Additionally, the normal progression of monsoon across most regions further contributed to good demand during the onset of sowing for the Kharif season."
