Tharoor recalls Sanjay Gandhi's role in Emergency; calls it a dark era
Tharoor expressed his views in an article published in the Emergency in the Malayalam daily Deepika on Thursday, PTI reported. Recalling Sanjay Gandhi's role, the Congress MP wrote, 'Sanjay Gandhi, the son of Indira Gandhi, led forced sterilisation campaigns which became a notorious example of this. In poor rural areas, violence and coercion were used to meet arbitrary targets. In cities like New Delhi, slums were mercilessly demolished and cleared. Thousands of people were rendered homeless. Their welfare was not taken into consideration.'
Former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed the Emergency on June 25, 1975, and it was imposed till March 21, 1977. Recalling the dark era of the Emergency, the Congress Working Committee member noted that the efforts undertaken for discipline and order often turned into acts of cruelty that could not be justified.
Tharoor further said that democracy is not something to be taken lightly; it is a precious legacy that must be constantly nurtured and preserved, adding that the India of today is not the India of 1975.

On June 25, former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi imposed a period of Emergency, which lasted for 21 months. The decision was announced on All India Radio shortly after the Supreme Court allowed a conditional stay on a verdict passed by the Allahabad High Court, declaring her election to the Lok Sabha null and void. The court also asked Gandhi to stay away from the parliamentary proceedings.
According to a DD News report, political unrest began to grow in the 1970s, when the opposition to the then-government increased, specifically in states like Bihar and Gujarat, where a series of protests were led by Jayaprakash Narayan. The public dissatisfaction was fuelled by issues like student-led agitations, unemployment, rising inflation, and allegations of corruption.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday flayed the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP) for protecting criminal networks as he specifically referred to the 2008 Malegaon blast case. The CM said the Congress falsely implicated Hindus in the Malegaon blast case as he demanded an apology for what he called their 'anti-India and anti-Sanatan' actions. Yogi said the Congress and the SP divided the society along the caste lines, incited riots and shielded criminal markets like Sotiganj, a former hub for stolen vehicle parts in Meerut. 'Freedom fighters didn't sacrifice their lives for us to be divided by caste and caught in riots. Sotiganj was the identity of the Congress and the SP; our identity is development,' he said. Yogi further said now Meerut has a new identity in the form of the Meerut expressway, rapid rail and the state's first sports university. On the occasion, the CM dedicated the ₹2,570 crore, 295-hectare integrated township to former PM Atal Bihari Vajpayee, emphasising its potential to generate employment, attract industries and include schools, a medical college and consolidated divisional offices. 'This township will redefine Meerut with residential, industrial and commercial zones, offering affordable housing for NCR residents and connectivity via the rapid rail corridor,' he said. Yogi also highlighted plans to enhance tourism at Bhola Ki Jhaal, a water body in Meerut, and redevelop the Circuit House. The CM praised PM Narendra Modi's vision for promoting indigenous goods, urging citizens to avoid foreign products that could fund terrorism. 'Your money should not end up in the hands of terrorists. This is new India and new Uttar Pradesh — no place for mafia or crime,' he said. Yogi also announced progress on India's largest expressway from Meerut to Prayagraj, set to reduce travel time to Lucknow to six hours and revealed plans for a new expressway to Haridwar and approval for Meerut's inner road projects. Targeting the opposition further, he likened those dividing society on caste lines to 'termites' and criticised their hypocrisy. 'They send their children abroad but feel pain when the poor get better facilities. They want you to travel by bullock cart,' the CM said.

Malegaon Blast: Maharashtra Must Challenge Acquittal Verdict, Says Congress MLA Arif Masood
New Delhi: Congress MLA from Madhya Pradesh, Arif Masood, urged the Maharashtra government to file an appeal against the acquittal of all seven accused in the 2008 Malegaon blast case, including former BJP MP Pragya Singh Thakur and Lt Col Prasad Purohit. Masood emphasized that terrorism has no religion and should not be associated with any faith. He cited the state government's recent decision to challenge the Bombay High Court's acquittal of 12 accused in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case, stating that similar action should be taken in the Malegaon case. "Terrorism has no religion, nor is it related to any Maharashtra government, which has announced that it would file an appeal against the acquittal of the 12 accused in the 7/11 Mumbai train blasts case by the Bombay High Court, should do the same thing in the Malegaon case too," said Arif Masood. Meanwhile, families of the Malegaon blast victims have expressed their intent to challenge the verdict of the special NIA court, which acquitted all the accused on July 31. Their lawyer, Shahid Nadeem, confirmed that some of the families will independently file appeals. He also criticized the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for not taking action against witnesses who turned hostile during the trial. The Maharashtra government had earlier approached the Supreme Court to challenge the Bombay High Court's acquittal in the 2006 Mumbai train blasts case. In the Malegaon investigation, after the NIA took over from the ATS, it dropped charges under the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA), citing issues with how the provisions were applied. The 2008 Malegaon blast occurred on September 29 in the Nashik district, killing six people and injuring over 100. In its judgment, the special court not only acquitted all seven accused but also directed the government to pay compensation, Rs 2 lakh to the families of those killed and Rs 50,000 to the injured. The court found insufficient evidence to prove that Pragya Thakur owned the motorcycle allegedly used in the blast, noting that its chassis number had been erased. It also observed that Thakur had renounced worldly possessions two years before the incident.

Stalin should take responsibility for non-fulfillment of DMK's poll promises, says EPS
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday said Chief Minister M.K. Stalin should take responsibility for not fulfilling DMK poll promises such as NEET exemption for Tamil Nadu, and hike in power tariff and property tax and the worst law and order situation and apologise to the people of the State. Addressing a meeting in Tirunelveli Town and Palayamkottai in the evening as part of his ongoing Makkalai Kaappom, Thamizhagaththai Meetpom campaign amid steady drizzle, Mr. Palaniswami said various welfare schemes introduced by the AIADMK government were withdrawn by the DMK regime. Even though NEET was notified during the Congress regime on December 21, 2010, with DMK sharing power and the party's Gandhi Selvan serving as Minister for State for Health, Mr. Stalin was lying and putting the blame on AIADMK. After promising the people of Tamil Nadu NEET exemption, this promise remains abandoned even after 50 months of being in power. Neither Mr. Stalin and nor his son and Deputy Chief Minister Udhayanidhi was not ready to share with the public the 'secret' behind getting NEET exemption. 'After promising NEET exemption, the DMK has forged electoral alliance with the Congress even after Congress leader P. Chidambaram's wife argued in support of NEET. Consequently, 25 students have so far ended their lives. Mr. Stalin should take responsibility and apologise for giving the public fake promise of NEET exemption,' Mr. Palaniswami said. The AIADMK opened 17 government medical colleges, 21 polytechnic colleges, 67 arts and science colleges and gave 7.50% reservation for government school students in higher education admission. Furtehr, the AIADMK, which signed in the UDAY Scheme in 2017, did not hike power tariff till 2021 as it did not accept farm meter reading and increase in power tariff every three months. But, the DMK hiked electricity tariff by 67% ever since it came to power in 2021 and comfortably put the blame on the AIADMK. After promising to not increase property tax, the Stalin-led government increased it by 100% for houses and 150% for commercial buildings. In an indirect reference to the signing of MoUs in Thoothukudi on Monday with a few investors, Mr. Palaniswami said most of the 404 MoUs signed in the first and the second Global Investors' Meet were translated into action to give employment for over 10 lakh youth. 'But, this government is not ready to release a 'White Paper' on the success of its Global Investors' Meet.' Despite adverse situations such as drought, flood, cyclone and COVID-19 outbreak, the AIADMK kept inflation under control, while the people were suffering a lot due to skyrocketing prices of essential commodities even as the law and order situation was in the worst shape. 'After tasting power at the Centre for 16 years, including that of the government headed by Atal Behari Vajpayee, the DMK, without doing anything good for the people of Tamil Nadu, is blaming the AIADMK for aligning with the BJP. Since both parties want the ouster of DMK, we have joined hands and we will uproot you,' Mr. Palaniswami said. State BJP president Nainar Nagenthiran, who accompanied Mr. Palaniswami, listed his achievements in Tirunelveli constituency as the MLA of the constituency during his tenure since 2021. He said lawlessness, brutal murders, drug abuse and sexual assault had reached a crescendo in Tamil Nadu and made the State unsafe. 'Hence, the DMK government should be uprooted and the AIADMK-led front will achieve this with your overwhelming support.' The State would get Central funding only when the ruling party cooperated with the Central Government, he added. Mr. Palaniswami addressed a massive gathering at Palayamkottai.
