SHARJAH, (WAM) Emirati publisher, author, and women's advocate Sheikha Bodour bint Sultan Al Qasimi has made history by becoming the first woman from an Arab Gulf state to receive a prestigious BolognaRagazzi Award for Fiction.Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi received the prize for her groundbreaking children's book 'House of Wisdom' at a ceremony in the impressive Farnese Chapel, at Palazzo d'Accursio, in Bologna.Reflecting on the honour, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi said, 'For me, this award signals a shift towards a more inclusive children's publishing sector. Amid heightened global tensions, stories like 'House of Wisdom' carry a message that books can occasion unity, progress, and a deeper understanding between cultures. It's a timely statement about literature's power to build bridges and keep the bigger human picture in view.'She added, 'The House of Wisdom was a library that symbolised how knowledge and collaboration across cultures can build sturdy bridges. Its loss in 1258 is a tragic allegory for the fragility of intellectual freedom – a lesson of undiminished relevance today.'Feted for its engaging approach to encouraging critical thought, scientific curiosity, and compassion, the success of 'House of Wisdom' marks progress in international recognition of the value of Middle Eastern children's literature. The book is illustrated by Majid Zakeri Younesi, whose evocative art provides a breathtaking complement to the story.Although unable to be in Bologna to collect the award with Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi, he said, 'Working on 'House of Wisdom' was a unique opportunity to visually capture the spirit of curiosity and innovation that drives humanity's infinite quest for learning and dialogue, something Sheikha Bodour has so deftly portrayed in her narrative.'The day after the prize-giving, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi spoke on a thought-provoking panel with other BolognaRagazzi Award winners and joined a celebration reception at the Kalimat Group stand. On both occasions, she shared her inspiration behind 'House of Wisdom,' emphasising the importance of preserving cultural and intellectual legacies, the role of storytelling in bridging cultural divides, and Sharjah's commitment to promoting knowledge, including through the creation of its own House of Wisdom. Before receiving the award, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi signed copies of her book at the Giannino Stoppani Children's Bookshop, which she helped restore after it was destroyed by fire in 2022.
To support the renovation, Sheikha Bodour Al Qasimi allocated significant funds from the Sharjah World Book Capital Office.

9 farm-to-table restaurants in Dubai for nourishing meals

Once upon a time it was fashionable to add the words 'farm to table' to a restaurant description. Just a way to attract more of an audience and to appear different, but now it's evolved and grown into a culinary movement, led by environment and community conscious chefs and restauranteurs who are bringing local farms and farmers into the spotlight. Think fresh, seasonal produce – organic vegetables, free-range and ethically-raised meats, and non-processed dairy. These restaurants in Dubai offer just that. Guests visiting will see Teible's eco-friendly ceiling made from superfine wood wool sourced from an FSC-certified forest, countertops made with a date seed-based material, and walls built using discarded palm trees from Abu Dhabi. Dubai for Dates returns this weekend with competitions, auctions, and cultural celebrations

Get ready to go date crazy as Dubai for Dates returns this Friday, July 25, for its second edition. Organised by the Hamdan Bin Mohammed Heritage Center (HHC), this week-long event pays tribute to the UAE's beloved palm tree and its most prized fruit, the date. More than just a cultural throwback, it's a living celebration of Emirati identity, agriculture, and community. Held at Al Remah Fort on the Dubai–Al Ain Road, the festival runs daily from 10am to 10pm. Visitors can expect a buzzing atmosphere of heritage competitions, artisanal stalls, and family-friendly experiences. It's all about honouring the past while engaging with the present. This year's edition features 13 competition categories, including returning favourites and new additions. Among them are the 'Homegrown Palm' categories (Dubai and General), sponsored by Furjan Dubai, and a 'Government Entities' section. A newly introduced highlight is the 'Dubai Hilwa' competition, named after a rare and sought-after local date variety. It's backed by Al Shindagha Museum and Dubai Culture. Meanwhile, the high-profile 'Dubai Elite' category, sponsored by Emaar, promises to draw strong contenders. All entries will be reviewed by a specialist judging panel chaired by Saeed Khalifa bin Thalith and supported by experienced figures in date cultivation and heritage, ensuring that authenticity and quality remain paramount. One of the standout additions this year is a seven-day palm tree auction, organised in partnership with Emirates Auction. Expect a fascinating look into the commercial and symbolic value of Emirati palm trees, with prized varieties up for grabs. 'This initiative is not merely an event, but a social and national message,' said HHC CEO Abdullah Hamdan bin Dalmook. 'The palm tree is not just a tree; it is a symbol of generosity, deep roots, and intergenerational connection.' As Dubai continues to build on its heritage-led initiatives, Dubai for Dates serves as a reminder that tradition and progress can grow side by side. Whether you're a fan of local produce, looking for a family day out, or just keen to learn more about Emirati culture, this is one summer festival worth checking out.
