Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola snubs lucrative approaches from Saudi Pro League

Daily Mirror23-05-2025
Andoni Iraola has just over one year remaining at on his current deal at Bournemouth but the Cherries are confident of tying down the Spaniard to fresh terms
Bournemouth boss Andoni Iraola has rejected lucrative approaches to coach in the Saudi Pro League this summer. The Spaniard, who has made a huge impression on the South Coast since arriving from Rayo Vallecano in the summer of 2023, is now approaching the final year of his contract at the Vitality Stadium.
Bournemouth, however, remain optimistic that Iraola will not only fulfil the final 12 months of his deal but also pen fresh terms and extend his stay with the Cherries. Talks over an extension are ongoing and are expected to continue at the end of the season with owner Bill Foley determined to fend off mounting interest in Iraola's services.

The Spaniard has attracted admirers at Tottenham, who are poised to make a decision on the future of Europa League-winning boss Ange Postecoglou, but there have already been formal approaches from the Middle East.

It's understood at least one unnamed side, believed to be Al-Hilal (though sources at the Saudi club refused to comment), recently approached Iraola's representatives and indicated a willingness to meet his release clause which is worth between £9million and £10m.
Iraola politely rejected the proposal and sources close to the 42-year-old have indicated he wants to continue managing in the Premier League despite also attracting interest from Europe.
Bournemouth are ready to execute arguably the biggest summer of their history as they gear up for the departures of Real Madrid-bound Dean Huijsen and Liverpool target Milos Kerkez.
Winger Antoine Semenyo and centre-back Illia Zabarnyi are also attracting interest though the Cherries have little desire to oversee a fire-sale as they look to kick on again next season and compete for European football.
Iraola recently outlined his desire to "close the gap" at the top of the Premier League as he looks to drive ambitious Bournemouth to new heights.
He sold following the opening of the club's new £32million training centre: "I think we are lucky to be here in this moment for the club. I think the club is taking steps forward, but also knowing the challenges of the competition.
"Every club in the Premier League is very powerful and probably bigger than us. We have to try to reduce this gap. With the new training ground and the improvements to the stadium, I think we are getting closer to the other teams. I always tell the players, the club are giving us everything, so now it's our moment to perform."

Last week, Sun Sport exclusively reported the Magpies would not sell Isak, even if he wanted to talk to Liverpool about a British transfer record fee. Now, his agent has revealed 'all options' are being analysed this summer, and that an outcome may be finalised soon. He travelled back to Glasgow with us, but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. Both [Joelinton and Isak] are fit but not ready to play. Carlos Sainz reveals what Ferrari didn't tell him about Lewis Hamilton before Mercedes talks

Carlos Sainz was suddenly dropped by Ferrari as they announced the signing of Lewis Hamilton in February 2024, with the Spaniard blindsided and left lacking an explanation Carlos Sainz has revealed that Ferrari didn't explain why when they told him he would be replaced by Lewis Hamilton. The Formula One world was rocked in February 2024 when it emerged that the seven-time world champion would be joining the iconic Italian team, partnering up with Charles Leclerc. ‌ Sainz, who was caught completely off guard by the announcement, had been under the impression that his future at Maranello was secure. The Spanish driver, 30, was in the midst of contract renewal talks, with his deal set to run out after the 2024 season. ‌ He finished the season with the Scuderia before joining Williams for the current 2025 campaign, while Hamilton bid farewell to Mercedes, where he had enjoyed the most successful driver-team partnership in F1 history. ‌ Sainz has now opened up about the shocking moment he was told of Fred Vasseur's decision over a phone call, voicing his disbelief and noting the lack of answers he was given by the team regarding his axing. He explained on the High Performance Podcast: 'I received a phone call and I suddenly received the news. I was completely shocked. I went from believing I was going to be in Ferrari for a while to, 'What am I going to do now?' "It never occurred to me that that could happen.' When asked whether they gave him any reasons, he added: 'No, not really. There weren't many reasons. ‌ "I'm not going to go a lot into the detail of those conversations but I was like, 'Okay now it's my time to shine and to prove to everyone what I'm worth. It's the most important moment of my life now.' 'I went into that late February and March period with the mentality of I'm just going to go for it. That gave me a bit of a kick and I think it made me a better driver.' ‌ Sainz's previous season had ended in a disappointing seventh placed finish in the drivers' championship, which may have been one reason for Ferrari reconsidering his future. Sainz then entered talks with Sauber, Alpine and even Mercedes, potentially replacing Hamilton in a dramatic swap. But despite lengthy discussions with Toto Wolff, he admits it was never a serious possibility. Asked whether he was on the verge of securing a contract offer, he said: 'Not really. We spoke a lot with Toto and everyone else at the time and I was certainly one of the options that was considered. But how close was I? You can ask Toto that. But I think he is very happy with Kimi Antonelli.' Both Sainz and Hamilton have faced challenges adapting to their new teams this season. Despite being halfway through the campaign, Hamilton is yet to clinch a podium finish and sits sixth in the standings, while Sainz finds himself in a disappointing 15th place.

Rio Ferdinand hails Man Utd for 'not buckling and paying over the odds' for Bryan Mbeumo

Rio Ferdinand is convinced that Manchester United have stood their ground admirably regarding getting the right price for Bryan Mbeumo, as the Brentford forward looks set to join the Red Devils Rio Ferdinand is adamant Manchester United stood their ground and didn't 'buckle' when it came to the transfer of Bryan Mbeumo. ‌ The former United defender feels that the hierarchy at Old Trafford ultimately refused to budge on the number they had in mind for Mbeumo, and this is the reason why the transfer discussions went on for so long. The Cameroon international looks set to join the Red Devils after a bid worth up to £71million was accepted by Brentford over the weekend. ‌ United previously had two bids rejected by the Premier League side for the 25-year-old, which Ferdinand believes was the club playing the long game in order to get their man for the right price. ‌ Speaking on his YouTube channel Rio Presents, the 46-year-old said: "I think the Mbeumo deal, I think Man United in past years would have buckled and just given Brentford exactly what they wanted. "I think this one they didn't. I think they stood firm and said, 'Listen, we're not going to move. We've got other targets and we'll go to them, we're willing to wait but we're not going to budge on the number.'" Discussing United's transfer strategy of old, Ferdinand added: "I think before, the old regime would have buckled and just said, 'We'll give you what you want and paid over the odds,' like we have with numerous players over the years. ‌ "So I think yes, it did take longer than we thought or expected or anticipated, but it got done and I think it was nearer to the price that Man United wanted to pay rather than what Brentford were trying to ask for and demand. So in that sense I'd say that's good." The Premier League icon is one of very few who believes United's transfer plans for Mbeumo were the correct way to go, as the move took over six weeks to complete. ‌ This lengthy saga frustrated many supporters as the player snubbed interest from the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Tottenham Hotspur to focus solely on a move to Manchester. Even Mbeumo's new team-mates were quick to comment on the time it took for him to join, as Leny Yoro offered an insight to the dressing room's reaction to the signing. Speaking after United's 0-0 draw against Leeds United in their pre-season friendly on Saturday, the French defender was full of praise for the club's next signing. ‌ "Bryan is a really good player, I am really happy he has come to the club," Yoro told United's Scandinavian Supporters' Club. "That is my guy. I am waiting for him now! That was long, that was long, but he is here now and I'm really happy!"
