Martin Elling, Ex-McKinsey partner sentenced to prison for obstructing justice by a US court

India Gazette23-05-2025
New Delhi [India], May 23 (ANI): Martin Elling, former partner at McKinsey & Co., received a six-month prison sentence for obstructing justice, Reuters reported on Thursday. The ex- McKinsey partner was involved in destruction of documents related to the consulting firm's advice to Purdue Pharma on how to aggressively increase sales of their opioid painkiller, OxyContin. As reported by Reuters, U.S. District Judge Robert Ballou delivered the sentence in Abingdon, Virginia, after McKinsey's December agreement to pay USD 650 million to settle related charges from the U.S. Department of Justice regarding their work for Purdue.Prosecutors in the case had sought a one-year prison term after Elling's guilty plea in January. His lawyer argued that any jail time would be 'devastating' and bar him from living in his new residence in Thailand.A representative for Elling's legal team confirmed the sentence and stated that he is apologetic for his actions.Purdue Pharma itself admitted guilt in 2020 to charges related to the misconduct related to its marketing and sale of its prescription painkillers.Elling played a role in securing McKinsey's work with Purdue in 2013, which led to the New York-based firm developing a strategy to significantly increase OxyContin sales.Prosecutors detailed that this strategy involved targeting 'high-value' medical professionals, including those who prescribed opioids inappropriately.Court documents revealed that Elling was among a small group of McKinsey partners who attended a 2013 meeting with the Sackler family, the owners of Purdue Pharma, who ultimately approved McKinsey's proposal. In July 2018, after learning about a lawsuit filed against Purdue by the Massachusetts attorney general, Elling emailed a McKinsey colleague questioning whether they should 'eliminate all our documents and emails.'The following month, Elling emailed himself a reminder to 'delete old pur (Purdue Pharma) documents from laptop,' and prosecutors stated that a forensic analysis confirmed he did so. NDB mandate must focus on agility, tech and sustainable growth: Sitharaman

Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Friday said in today's fast changing world, the mandate for New Development Bank (NDB) must be renewed with focus on greater agility, technological advancement and efficiency. Observing that NDB has played an important role in reshaping the financial landscape for the global South, she said, it has approved more than 100 projects, and it has approved more than USD 35 billion in financing across member countries, including key Indian initiatives like the metro rail, renewable energy and water management. NDB is not just a source of capital, it is a platform for shaping a more equitable and responsive global financial architecture, she said during the NDB Governors Seminar on the theme 'Challenges for Financing Sustainable Development for the Global South' in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. "In today's fast changing world, its mandate must be renewed. The NDB's mandate must be renewed with focus on greater agility, technological advancement and efficiency, efficiency in an enhanced way. So in conclusion, I would like to say financing sustainable development in the global south isn't just about raising funds. "It's about building fairness. It's about building trust, and it's building leadership. India, with its dual role as a leading emerging economy and a global influencer, is uniquely positioned to lead this transformation, not just for itself, but for all those who share its aspirations," she said. Sitharaman underlined the need for decisive collective action by the global South to address multiple uncertainties arising from fiscal constraints, climate change, and evolving geopolitical dynamics. Sitharaman highlighted that this deters long-term investment and delays critical progress in areas like renewable energy and climate-resilient infrastructure. Stressing that India stands at a unique crossroads, she said, "the aspirations of a billion people converge with the imperatives of a fast-changing planet. And in this moment, policy will determine pace. India has demonstrated how scale and speed can go hand-in-hand." Through transformative policy initiatives like UPI, Aadhaar and Jan Dhan, India has driven financial inclusion even to the last-mile, she said. India's policy ecosystem has been further strengthened by programmes such as the Gati Shakti National Master Plan, the National Green Hydrogen Mission and installation of over 220 GW of renewable energy capacity to accelerate clean energy transition, she said, adding, these efforts are complemented by a commitment to macroeconomic stability. "As we strive towards the 2030 agenda, the financing gap for Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in developing countries has widened to over USD 4.2 trillion annually post-pandemic, reflecting the widening gap between ambition and reality," she said.

Family of Ganjam worker anxious after 3 Indians abducted in Mali

1 2 Berhampur: Family members of a 28-year-old Ganjam worker are anxious that he might be among the three Indians abducted from a cement factory in Kayas, Mali, on July 1. Since July 1, the family is unable to communicate with P Venkatraman, who is working at the Diamond Cement Factory since Nov last year after being recruited through a Mumbai-based company, and fears he might be among those abducted. His mother, P Narasama (50), of Samarajhol village in Ganjam district's Hinjili, last spoke to him on June 30. "I am very worried about my son's fate and request the govt to ensure his safe return. His phone number is unreachable now," she told reporters. On Thursday, Narasama received a call from her son's employer stating he was under police custody. However, she later learned through social media about the abduction. She filed a report with Hinjili police on Friday evening and appealed for intervention. The ministry of external affairs (MEA) has expressed serious concern over the abduction of Indian workers.
