August 31 to be celebrated as ‘Bhatke Vimukt Diwas' across Maharashtra
Nagpur: In a move recognising the historical injustice faced by nomadic and denotified communities, the Maharashtra govt has approved the celebration of Bhatke Vimukt Diwas on August 31 every year. The decision marks a long-standing demand of these communities and aims to honour their struggle and contributions to nation-building. The announcement comes as a response to appeals made to chief minister Devendra Fadnavis by various community leaders and organisations, including the Bhatke Vimukt Vikas Parishad. Now, August 31 will now be observed at both state and district levels to commemorate the repeal of the Criminal Tribes Act on the same date in 1952. Originally enacted in 1871 by the British regime, the Criminal Tribes Act branded 193 communities as "criminal," subjecting them to widespread discrimination, surveillance, and social ostracisation. The law caused generations of nomadic and denotified communities to suffer isolation and state-sanctioned atrocities. Sharing the update on social media, Nagpur Central MLA Pravin Datke expressed gratitude towards CM Fadnavis, OBC welfare minister Atul Save, and the Parishad for their role in achieving this milestone. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like 5 Books Warren Buffett Wants You to Read In 2025 Blinkist: Warren Buffett's Reading List Undo "This is a fight for the dignity of our community. It is a tribute to the sacrifices and resilience of our ancestors," Datke wrote. Leaders and activists across the state welcomed the move, calling it a step forward in recognising historical injustices and reaffirming the state's commitment to social justice and inclusion. Celebrating Bhatke Vimukt Diwas annually is expected to raise awareness about the history, culture, and contributions of nomadic and denotified tribes in Maharashtra.

Maharashtra CM Fadnavis appeals for peace after communal tension erupts over objectionable post
Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday appealed to the public to maintain peace and cooperation after communal tensions flared up in Pune district due to an objectionable social media post shared by an outsider. "We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace and no one should take the law into their own hands," Fadnavis said.(ANI) The remark came after a tense situation had arisen in Yavat village at Daund Taluka of Pune District following an alleged objectionable social media post by a local youth. Villagers took to the streets and a few youngsters attempted to vandalise a structure. A heavy deployment of Police personnel was made in the area. Police said that the incident occurred in the village a week ago, so the situation was already tense. Speaking to the media persons, CM Fadnavis said, "We have only one appeal: everyone should maintain peace and no one should take the law into their own hands. If anyone does so, the police will take strict action against them," he warned. The CM assured that the situation had been brought under control and peace was restored in the area. CM Fadnavis said, "I have just gathered information about the matter. According to it, a person from outside had posted an objectionable status, which led to tensions. People came out onto the streets, and in order to control the crowd, a lathi-charge had to be carried out. The situation is now under control. People from both communities are sitting together, talking, and trying to resolve the tension." "Some people deliberately post such statuses to create tension, but strict action will definitely be taken against them. Just because a gathering or event took place, does that give anyone the freedom to post such provocative statuses? No one has the right to make offensive remarks against any religion in this manner," he said. He dismissed the claims that the unrest was linked to a recent public gathering, saying, "So, to say that the tension arose because of a public gathering is completely incorrect. At present, the area is entirely peaceful. In many such cases, doctored videos also come to light. Hence, that aspect must also be investigated." Furthermore, Swapnil Adinath Kadam, a bakery owner whose shop was vandalised and burned, said, "Some of my workers are Muslims and they have come from UP. A social media post surfaced in the morning, it was said that Muslims had posted an objectionable social media post. There is a mosque 150-200 metres from here. They were heading to the mosque. Someone said that this bakery belongs to Muslims. But the bakery belongs to us, and they (workers) are here on rent. They pelted stones at the bakery, took away the tin sheets, and hurled something inflammable inside. Our bakery is completely burned. None of our workers had to do anything with the social media post..." Further investigation into the post and the video clip is underway.

MNS alleges some Thane schools continue to teach Hindi to primary students, despite stay order by CM
Thane: The Thane unit of the MNS has alleged that a few city schools are continuing to teach Hindi to primary section students despite a stay ordered by Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on the issue. A delegation of MNS activists, led by Thane Party president Avinash Jadhav, armed with a weekly subject-wise timetable of a standard III class issued by a suburban school, met Thane education department officials on July 30. The activists informed that a few schools, especially from Diva, were teaching the subject, claiming they had already received Hindi subject study material. "Some schools have started teaching Hindi to primary section students, claiming they haven't received any orders from the education department. The CM issued a stay on the issue, and it is surprising how his instructions are not followed at the ground level. We have requested the administration to probe the issue and immediately restrict these schools from teaching Hindi, else we will stage a protest," said Jadhav.
