Government girl students in TN's Aranthangi forced to do squats over delay in submitting documents
One of the students with suspected wheezing condition allegedly fell ill after the incident. Unable to walk, she had to be helped by her friends and parents to reach school on Tuesday. 'Distressed by his daughter's condition, her father also collapsed and had to be given first-aid,' another parent said.
'The teacher had even warned she would make students perform 200 squats if the documents weren't submitted by Tuesday,' the parent of one of the affected students said.
The School Education Department will conduct an official inquiry on Wednesday.
The incident, which took place on Monday, triggered outrage among parents and activists, who visited the school the next day, seeking accountability. According to sources, the class teacher instructed students to submit a list of documents within 15 days of school reopening. These included their community, income, residence, and birth certificates, Aadhaar card, and bank account details.
'Document submission is the responsibility of the parents. To make their children suffer for this mistake is unfair,' a source told TNIE.
School management committee member Thendral K Karupaiah acknowledged that the punishment was inappropriate but maintained that the teacher had a good track record, adding that she had apologised. The headmistress assured parents such incidents wouldn't recur. 'As the affected parents knew the teacher, who is a local resident, they did not want to press charges,' he added.

‘Who gives you the right?': Cops question vigilantes' ‘identity drive' on kanwar route
Agra: UP police have issued notices to at least six supporters of an ashram head for allegedly carrying out an unauthorised "drive" to ascertain the identity and faith of dhaba workers along the kanwar yatra route in Muzaffarnagar a few days ago. The group allegedly demanded Aadhaar cards and details of caste, religion, and addresses from staff and owners at Pandit Ji Shudh Vaishno Dhaba on NH-58, and tried to forcibly remove a worker's trousers to verify his religion. The vigilantes, supporters of self-styled seer Swami Yashveer Maharaj, run an initiative named 'Pehchan Abhiyan (identification campaign)', claiming several food outlets on the kanwar route use Hindu names despite being operated by people from other communities, which could mislead pilgrims. In notices issued from New Mandi police station for disturbing public peace and conducting illegal checks without govt authorisation, police said: "Under which rule and authority did you check the hotels and dhabas, ask objectionable questions, and try to disturb the peace in the area? You are directed to appear within three days of receiving this notice and explain in writing why legal action should not be taken against you. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Experience Luxury at Its Finest – ATS Dolce Gr. Noida ATS Infrastructure Ltd Learn More Undo " SHO Dinesh Chand said more individuals are being identified. Maharaj denied the allegation that anyone forcibly removed any employee's trousers. But he said, "We warned this dhaba to change its name within 24 hours or face protests starting Thursday morning. This is not a Hindu-run establishment and is misusing the name 'Pandit'." He cited state govt directives requiring eateries to display the owner's name, warning of legal action under Section 420 for misrepresentation. In a related development, police separately registered a case against five people, including the dhaba's owners, after Dharmender Sharma, a manager associated with Yashveer, alleged he was assaulted on Sunday night. Police said an FIR was filed under relevant sections, including BNS Section 115(2) (voluntarily causing hurt). Police said investigations into both incidents are ongoing. Muzaffarnagar is a critical stop on the kanwar route for lakhs of devotees from UP, Delhi, Rajasthan, and Haryana who collect Ganga water from Haridwar during Shravan month. This came even as Meerut district administration directed "every shop along the kanwar route to display QR codes, allowing pilgrims to instantly verify vendor details".

Supreme Court seeks enquiry report from A.P. Government on illegal mining scam involving ex-MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi
The Supreme Court on Wednesday (July 2, 2025) directed the State of Andhra Pradesh to submit, in a sealed cover, its inquiry report into an alleged illegal mining scam involving former Gannavaram MLA and YSR Congress Party leader Vallabhaneni Vamsi Mohan. The direction was issued by a Bench led by Justice M.M. Sundresh while hearing a petition filed by the State challenging a May 29 order of the Andhra Pradesh High Court, which had granted anticipatory bail to Mr. Mohan in connection with the case. Also read: A.P. Government constitutes SIT to investigate cases against former MLA Vallabhaneni Vamsi The Bench agreed to hear the State's petition in detail on July 17. Senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for the State, submitted that the government had not been granted a proper opportunity to present its case. He said Mr. Mohan was the 'kingpin' of a 'largescale mining scam' and that his custodial interrogation was necessary, citing allegations that he had threatened witnesses. When Justice Sundresh observed that the complaint appeared 'barebones' and lacked material particulars, Mr. Luthra responded that the inquiry report prepared by the State's Vigilance and Enforcement Department was exhaustive. The Bench then directed the State to place the report on record in a sealed cover. Also read: A.P. Police search for former MLA Vamsi's mobile phone According to the State's petition, the largescale illegal mining scam was uncovered through a comprehensive enquiry by the Vigilance and Enforcement Department. The illegal activities allegedly took place between 2019 and 2024 across Gannavaram, Bapulapadu, and Vijayawada Rural mandals. The State submitted that Mr. Mohan, during his tenure as MLA, had misused his office and conspired with associates to orchestrate a sophisticated racket involving the fraudulent procurement and misuse of temporary mining permits. The petition claimed that mining permits were obtained using forged documents, including PAN and Aadhaar details of unsuspecting civilians who had been misled into submitting their identity proofs under the pretext of enrollment in government welfare schemes. Further, legal procedures were allegedly bypassed to extract gravel and building stone, with complaints by local police and revenue authorities being suppressed due to Mr. Mohan's political influence. 'The total wrongful loss to the public exchequer due to these fraudulent mining activities has been calculated to be ₹195.04 crore,' the State's petition noted.

Staffer's death sparks debate over untrained union workers handling luxury vehicle unloading in Kerala
KOCHI: A tragic incident at a Kochi car dealership has reignited a long-simmering debate: Should untrained trade union workers be allowed to unload high-end vehicles? On the night of June 22, a brand-new Range Rover worth around Rs 4.5 crore went out of control while being unloaded from a trailer at a dealer yard in Chalikkavattom. The car crushed Roshan Antony Xavier, 36, a dealership staffer, to death. He was standing nearby when the vehicle, reportedly being handled by a trade union worker, veered off course. One of the union workers sustained minor injuries. The Palarivattom police have booked a case against the worker involved. 'Our demand is that only trained personnel should unload the vehicles, and that the government should give it legal backing. In our case, after a couple of minor mishaps, we insisted on doing the task with our expert staff. But even then, the trade unions charge 'nokkukooli',' Sabu Johny, an office- bearer, Kerala Automobile Dealers Association, told TNIE. It's learnt that headload workers unions charge around Rs 4,000 for luxury cars and half the amount for regular ones, claiming that they have the unloading rights of such cars being brought to the dealer yards or showrooms from the manufacturing plants by trucks. 'There is only one solution. Only those who got the training and expertise, whether the personnel is of the transporter, dealer or the union, should be unloading the vehicles. That's the demand of the association. The mishaps happen when people who don't have much experience with the vehicle systems, take up the job. Now there shouldn't be another death due to such mishaps in Kerala,' said R Renjith, KADA administrator. 'We've submitted a memorandum to the Chief Minister's Office. The Under Secretary at the CMO replied that the same is being forwarded to the Ernakulam Collector to conduct a detailed enquiry into the incident. A team of police and other officials inspected the vehicle and arrived at the conclusion that there was nothing faulty with the vehicle and that a manual error while unloading led to the mishap,' he added.
