Pioli returns to Fiorentina after one season at Al-Nassr

ROME: Italian coach Stefano Pioli, who spent last season in charge of Saudi club Al-Nassr, is to return to Fiorentina, a club he previously coached and played for as a player, the Tuscan club announced today.
The 59-year-old succeeds his compatriot Raffaele Palladino, who resigned to everyone's surprise in June, a few weeks after extending his contract until 2027.
"Fiorentina announces that its new coach for its first team is Stefano Pioli," the club said in a statement.
"Pioli, who returns to Florence after wearing the purple jersey as a player between 1989 and 1995 and having coached the club from 2017 to 2019, has signed a contract binding him to Fiorentina until June 30, 2028."
Fiorentina finished sixth in Serie A last season which qualified them for the Conference League.
Pioli left Al-Nassr, where Portuguese superstar Cristiano Ronaldo plays, at the beginning of the week after just one season in charge, having guided the club to third place in the Saudi League.
His coaching career includes spells at Bologna, Inter Milan, Fiorentina and then five years at AC Milan with whom he won Serie A in 2021-22. - AFP

Chelsea's ice man Palmer puts the chill on PSG in Club World Cup final

EAST RUTHERFORD: "Ice-Cole" Palmer lived up to his nickname in a scorching Club World Cup final on Sunday, scoring twice in Chelsea's 3-0 win over Paris St Germain on another broiling day at MetLife Stadium. Temperatures soared above 85 degrees Fahrenheit (29.4°C) in East Rutherford, New Jersey, but the Chelsea talisman had ice in his veins as he bagged two goals in eight minutes in the first half. He earned the Golden Ball as the best player of the tournament. The man of the match in their 4-1 Conference League final win over Real Betis in May, Palmer showed again that he does his best work under the biggest spotlight, as he also recorded an assist for Joao Pedro in the 43rd minute. "I like finals. It's happened again," he told DAZN. "It's a great feeling," he added. "Even better because everyone doubted us before the game, we knew that. To put a fight on like we did, it's good." A product of the Manchester City academy, Palmer made his senior debut with the team in September 2020 but never received the minutes on the pitch he believed he deserved, going to Chelsea three years later with the promise of more playing time. He wasted no time becoming Chelsea's new hero, firing in goals in his first season with the club, and Sunday's final marked another chapter in his success story, with Man City long ago eliminated from the tournament in the round of 16. He destroyed PSG's defence in a sensational first half on Sunday, running up and down the right channel before slotting in a tidy left-footed goal in 22nd minute. He doubled the score eight minutes later, again targeting the bottom-left corner of the goal as the legions of blue-clad Chelsea fans erupted in elation. European and French champions PSG were coming off an extraordinary season but appeared overwhelmed yet again as Palmer set up Pedro with a neat flick with two minutes left in the first half. "Today we found a position for him where there was more space to attack," said Chelsea coach Enzo Maresca. "Obviously Cole played really well but the effort from all the players was fantastic." - Reuters

Sinner targets golden era after Wimbledon win over Alcaraz

JANNIK SINNER has declared his best tennis is still ahead after dethroning Carlos Alcaraz to win his maiden Wimbledon title. The Italian world number one overcame his Spanish rival 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 in a gripping final, avenging his French Open defeat last month. Sinner's victory ended Alcaraz's two-year reign at the All England Club and marked his fourth Grand Slam triumph. The 23-year-old has now reached the last four major finals, winning three, but insists he is far from peaking. 'I don't think I'm at my best because at 23 I don't think you can be in your best shape ever. So hopefully I can keep improving,' Sinner said. 'I keep looking up to Carlos because even today I felt like he was doing couple of things better than I did.' The win carried extra significance for Sinner, who had lost five straight matches against Alcaraz before Sunday's breakthrough. Their rivalry has dominated men's tennis, with the pair sharing the last seven Grand Slam titles between them. Sinner admitted the mental challenge of bouncing back from his Roland Garros collapse, where he squandered a two-set lead and three championship points against Alcaraz, had been immense. 'This is the part where I'm the proudest because it really has not been easy,' he said. 'Only me and the people who are close to me know exactly what we have been through on and off the court.' Coach Darren Cahill believes the Sinner-Alcaraz duel could define the next decade of tennis, though cautioned against premature comparisons to the Federer-Nadal-Djokovic era. 'It's difficult to compare this rivalry to what we've just had. It's been a golden age in tennis with Novak and Roger and Rafa,' Cahill said. 'These guys still have a ways to go, but they've started incredibly well.'-AFP

Chelsea boss Maresca hails 'great triumph' in winning Club World Cup

CHELSEA coach Enzo Maresca insisted winning the Club World Cup meant as much as winning the Champions League after his side beat Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in the final of the first edition of FIFA's new competition on Sunday. 'I have the feeling that this competition is going to be as important, if not more important than, the Champions League,' said Maresca after adding the trophy to the UEFA Conference League title his team won in May. Maresca only took over at Chelsea a year ago but was previously on the coaching staff under Pep Guardiola at Manchester City when they won the Champions League in 2023. 'I was lucky to be on the coaching staff of a team that won the Champions League a few years ago, but this competition features the best teams in the world and I think we can value it on the same level,' said the Italian. 'It is a great triumph for us and it will allow the Chelsea fans to have that on our shirt for the next four years, so it is a source of pride.' Maresca said he instructed his players to go out and take the game to PSG from the off -- they went on to net all three goals in the first half with Cole Palmer netting a brace before Joao Pedro added his name to the scoresheet. 'The message was to let them understand that we were here to win the game and I think in the first 10 minutes we showed them that,' Maresca said. 'That set the tone of the game, and then the quality of the players was also important.' England international Palmer was named player of the match after bagging a brace and setting up Joao Pedro's goal. The 23-year-old therefore lived up to his superstar billing -- his face has appeared on billboards around New York advertising the tournament, alongside the likes of Real Madrid duo Kylian Mbappe and Vinicius Junior. 'To score the goals was a great feeling, as was the way the team showed fire out there -- the gaffer's game plan was spot on,' he said. 'I just try to do my job every time I go onto the pitch and hopefully I will continue. 'I have seen the billboards in Times Square and outside Madison Square Garden and it is obviously a nice feeling to be alongside those players,' he added - AFP
