Protest erupts at Soshanguve school over learner assaults

Chaos erupted at Soshanguve South Secondary School on Wednesday morning when learners broke the gate and left the premises to join a group of protesters from the EFF and United Africans Transformation (UAT).
The protesters demanded the principal's resignation after a viral video showing learners being physically assaulted with broomsticks by outsiders on school grounds on Monday, allegedly for arriving late.
It is alleged that the school principal allowed outsiders, linked to a local community policing forum, to discipline learners who are sometimes involved in violent fights.
A parent, who wished to remain anonymous, said her child was still traumatised after being beaten at school on Monday for arriving late.
The parent said: "He told us he was traumatised after being beaten with broomsticks, like a thief, especially by someone who was not his father. He is injured on his back, and we had to massage him last night to ease the pain. I am not feeling well about what happened."
Some learners claimed they had been previously assaulted in classrooms by the same community members, who also forced them to do push-ups.

Lindiwe Masilela from the EFF in Tshwane said her party's student command was called by learners to intervene in the situation that unfolded at the school on Monday.
She condemned corporal punishment, saying it had been abolished long ago and what happened at the school was unwarranted.
She demanded the arrest of the school principal, deputy principal, and the chairperson of the School Governing Body (SGB) for the assault incident.
Additionally, she called on Gauteng MEC for Education, Matome Chiloane, to intervene, criticising him for merely attending ceremonial events instead of addressing pressing issues.
Masilela dismissed the claim that her party had instructed learners to disperse from the school.
"You saw that it was the leaders who broke the gate lock to escape because they were scared to be at the school," she said.
Bongani Ramontja, leader of the civic group Soil of Africa, blamed the principal for involving community members in punishing learners.
"We want decisive action against the principal. He should be suspended pending investigation, along with teachers who witnessed the incident and failed to intervene," he said.
Lesley Sebotsane from UAT said: 'We need to get to the root of the problem so we can ensure our children are in a safe environment when they are at school. Reports of physical abuse signal that something is seriously wrong."
Gauteng Education spokesperson Steve Mabona said the department is aware and deeply concerned by an incident that took place on Monday.
'According to our reports, community members allegedly overpowered scholar patrollers and forced their way into the school premises where they reportedly began beating girl and boy learners. It is also alleged that they nearly assaulted department officials and the principal who tried to intervene, and they proceeded to verbally abuse them,' he said.
He said an assault case had been reported to the police and that psychosocial support was being provided to affected learners and staff.
He appealed to the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands.
'While we acknowledge the frustrations that may arise from issues such as late-coming, under no circumstances can physical violence or intimidation be justified, especially when directed at children and education officials,' he said.

Charges laid against Mchunu, pressure mounts for Ramaphosa to break act amid national security concerns
Ramaphosa is expected to meet with both Mchunu and Mkhawanazi before the end of the week. The political noose seems to be getting tighter and tighter around the neck of Police Minister Senzo Mchunu. On Thursday, the DA laid criminal charges against him at the Cape Town police station for allegedly misleading parliament. Mchunu is accused of lying to the portfolio committee of police after he initially denied knowing Brown Mogotsi, a man accused of playing a role in capturing the South African Police Service (Saps). In March this year, Mchunu denied knowing Mogotsi. Yet, in a public statement on 9 July, the minister admitted that he does in fact know Mogotsi, describing him as 'a comrade'. DA deputy Chief Whip, Baxolile Nodada, said Mchunu's contradictory remarks raise grave concerns about his misleading of parliament. 'It is a criminal act to mislead parliament in terms of the Powers, Privileges and Immunities of Parliament and Provincial Legislatures Act. 'The minister committed fraud by knowingly making a false statement with the intent to mislead parliament,' said Nodada. Nodada said Mchunu has violated the Powers and Privileges Act, which criminalises any attempt to mislead or obstruct parliament or its committees. 'It is simply unacceptable for a sitting minister to evade accountability while surrounded by allegations of corruption, links to criminal syndicates, and efforts to shield politically connected individuals from scrutiny,' he said. Where is the president? He criticised President Cyril Ramaphosa's inaction in the face of this growing scandal. 'It is indefensible. Four days after the explosive revelations by KwaZulu-Natal's provincial police commissioner, the president has neither acted against Minister Mchunu nor initiated any credible investigation,' he said. 'We have opened criminal cases against Minister Mchunu, who is charged with obstructing and defeating the course of justice, abuse of power and criminal conspiracy aimed at undermining lawful investigations,' said party spokesperson Nhlamulo Ndhlela. The party has also opened a case against Mchunu for unlawfully issuing executive instructions to disband the Political Killings Task Team and using intimidation tactics against whistleblowers and law enforcement officers. EFF calls for Ad Hoc Committee investigation into Mkhwanazi's allegations, rejects portfolio committee investigations
All eyes are on Ramaphosa as the country waits to see if he will take action against Mchunu. The EFF in parliament has criticised the Speaker of parliament, Thoko Didiza for delegating three portfolio committees in parliament to come up with resolutions on how the legislature should handle the allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Lieutenant General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi. On Wednesday, Didiza assigned the portfolio committees on Justice & Constitutional Development, Police, and Joint Standing Committee on Intelligence to investigate the veracity of Mkhwanazi's allegations. These allegations include widespread corruption within the South African Police Service (SAPS), involving politicians and the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA). Mkhawanazi also claims that police minister Senzo Mchunu is linked to criminal gangs and that he has interfered with cases. 'This approach is inadequately flawed' In a letter to Dididza, EFF Chief Whip, Noluntu Nolutshungu told Didiza that appointing three Committees to deal with the matter is procedurally flawed. 'While we appreciate the urgency with which the Office of the Speaker has responded, we respectfully submit that this approach is procedurally inadequate and substantively limited in addressing the magnitude of the matter at hand. 'The allegations raised by Lieutenant General Mkhwanazi on 6 July 2025 go far beyond the mandate of any individual portfolio committee. 'They implicate not only the executive, but also senior officials in the police service, members of the judiciary, prosecutorial authorities, intelligence structures, and business actors,' she said. The demand for a full investigation Nolutshungu said a unified approach with dedicated timelines and parliamentarians assigned to look at this would be the best option. 'The cross-cutting and systemic nature of these allegations demands a unified, non-fragmented process with the authority, resources, and mandate to pursue a full investigation,' she said. The need for a thorough investigation Nolutshungu said assigning the matter to three committees risks producing inconsistent processes, jurisdictional overlap, and weakened institutional accountability. 'A dedicated Ad Hoc Committee, properly constituted in terms of Rule 253 and supported by a clear resolution of the House, is the only mechanism capable of responding to the national crisis with the seriousness and coherence it demands,' she said. The EFF has formally submitted its request for consideration for the establishment of the Ad Hoc Committee. 'We further request that an urgent meeting of the Programming Committee be convened to facilitate the inclusion of this motion on the Order Paper for one of the upcoming sitting days,' she said. 'This matter deal with the integrity of the Minister of Police. It drills into the heart of safety and security challenges in SA a through investigation is needed,' he said. Neethling said Ramaphosa is under immense presser to take decisive action. 'I believe President Ramaphosa will act with caution and is unlikely to move against Minister Mchunu without a firm and credible basis for doing so. And, many questions are currently hanging in mid-air,' he said. Neethling said corruption in government has been a problem for some time now, he says it has come up in many ANC conferences, including in an ANC general council meeting in 2015. 'Yet, a decade later, we hear that South Africa's justice system has been severely weakened, allowing criminals to act with impunity, while political will to act against ministers accused of corruption appears lacking. 'Of particular concern are the remarks made by the National Director of Public Prosecutions, Shamila Batohi, who recently warned that the rule of law in South Africa is 'in the ICU on life support measures,' he said.
