Farewell Honda Civic Type R: Hot Hatch Pulled From Europe
After 28 years and six generations, the Honda Civic Type R is being pulled from the U.K. and European markets. However, to commemorate its long production run, Honda is building a limited-edition car.
Honda said it will remove the Civic Type R in 2026. "The industry is changing, and our model range is having to evolve with it in accordance with European legislation. However, Type R has always been Honda's ultimate expression of our passion for driving excitement, and we look forward to celebrating its heritage in the weeks and months ahead.'
Sadly, the Honda Civic Type R does not comply with the stricter upcoming emissions standards set by the European Union and the U.K.
The aforementioned special edition car, monikered the Ultimate Edition, will celebrate the Civic Type R's legacy as it bows out in Europe. Only 40 cars will be produced (10 destined for the U.K.), each featuring signature Champion White paintwork with contrasting red stripes, a nod to the model's traditional interior color.
Honda Civic Type R
There's no mention of extra performance, but the sixth generation car it's based on develops 324 bhp and 310 lb-ft, meaning 0-to-62 mph in 5.4 seconds and 171 mph flat out.
The Honda Civic Type R also holds the crown for being the fastest front-wheel-drive car around Suzuka Circuit, Japan, with a time of 2`23".
The Honda Civic Type-R joins other axed front-wheel-drive hot hatches like the Ford Focus ST and Hyundai i30N. This leaves the Volkswagen Golf and Polo GTI, Mini Cooper S, and its spicier JCW sibling.
Fortunately, the four-wheel drive hot hatch market is fronted by the Volkswagen Golf R, Mercedes-Benz AMG A45 S, and Toyota GR Yaris, and more manufacturers are releasing electrified alternatives.
Honda Civic Type R EK9
Honda never sold the first-gen (EK9) Civic Type R in the U.K. However, Honda introduced its second-gen EP3 into the market as an indirect Integra Type R replacement. And, by God, it caused a storm.
The Honda Civic Type R's 2.0-liter four-cylinder screamed to 8,000 rpm and developed 197 bhp at 7,400 rpm. This, combined with a stunning chassis and modest pricing, made it an immediate hit. They are a rarer sight on British roads today, but many fine examples still exist.
The spaceship-like FN2 arrived in 2007, powered by the same engine. However, Japan received a more powerful and lighter variant; the U.K. car was 153kg heavier than the previous model.
In 2015, the FK2 arrived with a turbocharged powerplant aimed at higher-powered machines; this was the first Type R to nudge nearly 170 mph. Finally, the fifth (FK8) and sixth (FL5) generation cars arrived in 2017 and 2023.
Honda Civic Type R Ultimate Edition
Many argue that the FK8 was the finest front-wheel-drive hot hatch of its time; some even said it was the best front-wheel-drive performance car full stop. Still, its styling unfavored against older models.
Finally, the FL5. This is a sublime machine that you can take the kids to school in before hitting some backroads. The chassis was beautifully balanced, the brakes had bite, and the tires had more grip.
We will be sad to see it go, but perhaps it is for the best. Cars are girthier now, which means more weight, and with stringent regulations, this could also result in less power. Type R's have allowed the driver to become part of the machine, and removing that engagement would break our hearts even more. Farewell, Honda Civic Type R.

Bugatti Drives Your Hypercar to 186 MPH Before Delivery
The Chiron era may be coming to an end, but Bugatti still has interesting details to share about the Mistral, the last of the W-16 breed. The 8.0-liter, quad-turbo machine broke cover three years ago as a €5 million roadster limited to 99 units, all of which were sold before the official premiere. Deliveries to customers didn't begin until last February, and now we're learning more about what happens from the moment the car is built until it's delivered to its rightful owner. Each Mistral undergoes rigorous testing for at least 248.5 miles (400 kilometers) to ensure everything is up to spec. If any issues are discovered, the car returns to the shop to sort out 'any irregularities, regardless of how minor.' It then heads back on the road for an additional 31 miles (50 kilometers), or more if needed. But that's not the most interesting part. Photo by: Bugatti Even before the owner sets foot inside the hypercar, Bugatti pushes the Mistral to 186 mph (300 km/h). It's part of a testing procedure to verify the ESP and ABS systems during emergency braking. As you can imagine, this isn't done on public roads. The company utilizes a section of an airfield at Colmar Airport in northeastern France. But the Mistral is capable of much more at full tilt. Last year, it reached 282 mph (453.9 km/h) at the Papenburg test track in Germany, making it the world's fastest open-top car. That's actually faster than Bugatti initially claimed, as the Chiron roadster was said to top out at 261 mph (420 km/h). Its predecessor, the Veyron 16.4 Grand Sport Vitesse, could 'only' hit 254 mph (408.8 km/h). Fun fact: the Mistral's top speed is only achievable with the roof removed. Bugatti's test drive involves far more than going fast and slamming on the brakes. From the seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the removable roof mechanism, everything is thoroughly evaluated. Only three people are qualified to test the Mistral before it's handed over to its owner. Bugatti will start Tourbillon deliveries in 2026, strictly as a coupe, though a follow-up roadster seems like an educated guess. The Chiron's successor might be even faster, as company CEO Mate Rimac has hinted that with the right tires, the new V-16 hypercar could break the 500 km/h barrier. That's 310.6 mph . Tesla sales plunge as Elon Musk rages at Trump
Sales at Elon Musk's Tesla have fallen to a three-year low amid the billionaire's public spat with Donald Trump. The electric carmaker said customer deliveries fell by 13.5pc in the second quarter of the year, a period in which Mr Musk left his role in the White House and publicly fell out with the US president over his tax and spending bill. Sales were 384,122 between April and June, down from 443,956 compared to the same quarter a year ago. It is the second straight double-digit drop in quarterly deliveries for Tesla, meaning sales for the year so far are at their lowest since 2022. The figures put Tesla on track for a second successive year of declining sales. Falling demand in recent months has been blamed partially on a political backlash against Mr Musk over his support for Mr Trump. However, growing competition from low-cost Chinese manufacturers has also threatened Tesla's grip on the electric vehicle (EV) market, with Shenzhen-based BYD overtaking Tesla in sales across Britain and Europe in recent months. Meanwhile, Mr Musk has also increasingly focused on Tesla's efforts on his Robotaxi project. The company last week started offering driverless taxi rides in Texas, and Mr Musk has said Tesla will begin production of a Cybercab next year. The decline in Tesla's sales led to heightened scrutiny of Mr Musk's work at the White House, where he sat in on cabinet meetings and spearheaded the department of government efficiency (Doge). This prompted some Tesla investors to raise concerns that Mr Musk was not focused enough on running the company. In April, Tesla revealed that quarterly sales had fallen by 13pc – its biggest drop since 2012. Investors had hoped that an upgrade to its best-selling Model Y would revive sales, but the drop in the second quarter was almost as severe. Tensions between Mr Musk and Mr Trump exploded in the last month, shortly after the South African-born businessman stepped down from the White House. The Tesla boss, who described Mr Trump's 'big beautiful bill' as a 'disgusting abomination', previously claimed the president should be impeached. Mr Trump hit back by threatening to cancel federal contracts for Mr Musk's rocket company, SpaceX. The two briefly held a truce, but the row was reignited this week when Mr Musk threatened to start a new political party and Mr Trump suggested he could deport him. Mr Musk has publicly criticised Mr Trump's bill for adding to the ballooning US deficit, but the legislation also cuts incentives for electric cars and renewable energy, which have boosted Tesla sales. The company's shares fell by 5pc on Tuesday amid the widening rift between the pair, although they rose on Wednesday because the sales drop was less severe than some analysts had feared. Mr Musk has predicted that Tesla will have millions of robotaxis in operation this year. Broaden your horizons with award-winning British journalism.
