Yuri, the cherished pet dog of the imperial family, passed away on June 23 from old age, the family's aides announced. She was 16.
Aides said the family is deeply saddened by her passing, especially Princess Aiko, who grew up with her.
Emperor Naruhito and Empress Masako adopted the mixed-breed dog through a veterinary clinic in 2009 before he ascended the throne. Their daughter, Aiko, was 7 at the time and named her.
Treated as a beloved member of the family, Yuri lived at the imperial residence in Tokyo and often joined the family on private retreats.
During Aiko's early difficult days in elementary school, Yuri even accompanied her on her morning commute, providing support and encouragement.
The friendly dog also played a special role in animal-assisted therapy activities before the COVID-19 pandemic by visiting hospitals in Tokyo. This included pediatric wards where she brought comfort and joy to young patients.
In her final years, Yuri spent more time resting quietly at home. On the evening of June 23, she passed away peacefully, surrounded by the imperial family.
Aides said that the family expressed heartfelt gratitude to those who supported and loved Yuri throughout her long life.

Japan Imperial Family's beloved dog Yuri dies due to old age

TOKYO -- The Imperial Family's beloved dog Yuri has died due to old age at 16 years and 4 months, a close aide to the Imperial Household announced on June 26. Emperor Naruhito, Empress Masako and their daughter Princess Aiko were all present when Yuri passed away on the evening of June 23 at the Imperial Residence within the Imperial Palace. Yuri was a female mixed breed dog with Shiba Inu traits, rescued at a veterinary hospital. The Imperial Couple adopted her in the spring of 2009 when she was about 2 months old, and Princess Aiko named her Yuri. She appeared frequently in family photographs released by the Imperial Household Agency to mark the family's birthdays and other occasions. Yuri had received training as a therapy dog and reportedly participated in animal therapy activities until the COVID-19 pandemic began. She interacted with children hospitalized in pediatric wards and took walks with them in hospital hallways. According to the aide, the Imperial Family stayed by Yuri's side in her final moments, recalling how deeply she had been loved by many people.

Japanese Students' English Proficiency Keeps Improving

News from Japan Society Culture Jun 23, 2025 18:12 (JST) Tokyo, June 23 (Jiji Press)--The English proficiency of public junior high school and senior high school students in Japan continues to improve, an education ministry survey for fiscal 2024 showed Monday. The proportion of junior high school third graders with English skills equivalent to Grade 3 or higher in the country's Eiken proficiency tests stood at 52.4 pct, up by 2.4 percentage points from the previous fiscal 2023 survey. The share of senior high school third graders with English skills equivalent to Grade Pre-2 or higher Eiken levels was up 1.0 point at 51.6 pct. The government aims to raise the both figures to at least 60 pct by fiscal 2027. The ministry has conducted the survey every year since fiscal 2013, except fiscal 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic. The latest survey was based on data for students who had a qualification or score from external certification tests such as Eiken and those who were judged by their school teachers to have equivalent English language skills as of December 2024.
