Muda's future with Syed Saddiq hinges on court decision tomorrow
PETALING JAYA : Muda's future with its former president, Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, will depend on the outcome of his appeal against his conviction and sentence for corruption and money laundering charges, which will be announced tomorrow.
Acting Muda president Amira Aisya Abdul Aziz told FMT that although the Muar MP had not held the party's presidency since he stepped down in 2023, he remained a key figure in Muda due to his role as its founder and sole representative in Parliament.
Amira also said that Muda currently has no plans to appoint a new president as party elections are expected to be held soon.
'For now, there is nothing urgent that requires us to fill the position. We'll leave it to the members to decide,' she said.
'If everything goes smoothly, it will be up to Syed Saddiq to decide whether or not he wants to run again (for president).'
Syed Saddiq was convicted by the Kuala Lumpur High Court of abetting in criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of assets and money laundering in November 2023.
The former youth and sports minister was sentenced to seven years' jail, fined RM10 million and ordered to be given two strokes of the rotan. The sentences have been stayed pending an appeal to the Court of Appeal.
He announced later that he would temporarily step down as Muda president and would not be involved in the party's decision-making processes.

Umno to conduct studies, surveys to recapture seats from PN, says Zahid

BN chairman Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said the coalition has decided to carry out studies and surveys to identify potential seats where it has a strong chance of defeating candidates from Bersatu and PAS in the next general election (GE16), Bernama reported. 'We will work hard to ensure that these seats are recaptured by candidates from Umno in GE16,' he said at the closing of the Sri Gading Umno delegates' meeting here today. Present were Johor Umno liaison committee chairman and menteri besar Onn Hafiz Ghazi, and Sri Gading Umno chief Lassim Burhan. Zahid, who is also the Umno president, urged all members not to be swayed by the 'Umdap' narrative propagated by the opposition, stressing that the current unity government is a political cooperation between BN and Pakatan Harapan. 'In BN, we also have MCA and MIC. PH comprises DAP, PKR and Amanah. 'So, let's not fall for the opposition's propaganda aimed at driving a wedge between BN and PH just so they can resort to the 'tebuk atap' (backdoor) tactic again,' he was quoted as saying. The deputy prime minister said the political cooperation currently being forged is a reality that all party members must accept and understand to ensure the stability of the government and to pave the way for Umno's return to dominance. Marang Bersatu backs Muhyiddin as PN's ‘poster boy' for GE16
Gerakan and Bersatu leaders have rallied behind Muhyiddin Yassin as PN's 'poster boy' and prime minister candidate, but PAS has called for wider consultation. PETALING JAYA : The Marang Bersatu division has unanimously nominated Muhyiddin Yassin as Perikatan Nasional's 'poster boy' for the 16th general election. Division chief Razali Idris confirmed the nomination, which was made in conjunction with Bersatu's nationwide annual division conferences. 'The delegates of the Marang division fully support Muhyiddin as the 'poster boy' for GE16. 'The decision was made during the division's meeting last night,' he told FMT.
