Atlanta Falcons training camp: Highlights, updates from Day 3
While Atlanta has been cautious with players thus far, things got a little testy between the offense and defense. Center Ryan Neuzil, rookie James Pearce Jr., guard Matthew Bergeron and linebacker Leonard Floyd got into a minor scuffle.
Defensive coordinator Jeff Ulbrich didn't like what happened but said he was pleased with Pearce's ability to make "amazing plays" after the incident, per 11Alive reporter Maria Martin.
The Falcons practiced without their other first-round pick, Jalon Walker, along with defensive lineman Zach Harrison and wide receiver Darnell Mooney. While there's been no major update on Mooney's status, ESPN and NFL Network reported that he would be out a "few weeks."
The team is off Monday but will return on Tuesday for a fully padded practice. The Falcons' video team released a highlight compilation from Day 3 on the team's official YouTube channel. Watch below.

49ers sign former Lions WR, release third-year RB
After trading Deebo Samuel to the Washington Commanders and losing Chris Conley to retirement this offseason, the San Francisco 49ers haven't had the best injury luck at wide receiver to start training camp. Second-year wideout Ricky Pearsall surprisingly started camp on the PUP with a hamstring injury that he's been dealing with since minicamp. Then, on Wednesday, 2024 fourth-round pick Jacob Cowing suffered a hamstring injury of his own just before their first training camp session of the year. Pearsall and Cowing join Brandon Aiyuk, who's recovering from a torn ACL suffered last season, as injured wideouts on San Francisco's roster. To give quarterback Brock Purdy another weapon to target in practice, the 49ers signed wide receiver Quintez Cephus on Thursday. Cephus, 27, played collegiately at Wisconsin from 2016-19 before the Detroit Lions took him in the fifth round (No. 166 overall) of the 2020 NFL draft. He spent three seasons in Detroit, catching 37 passes for 568 yards and four touchdowns in 22 games. Since then, he's had short stints with the Buffalo Bills, Houston Texans and Los Angeles Rams, but he hasn't played in a game since 2022. To make room for Cephus on the roster, San Francisco released running back Israel Abanikanda. The 22-year-old running back played at Pittsburgh from 2020-22, where he earned All-ACC and All-American honors in his final season. The New York Jets took Abanikanda in the fifth round (No. 143 overall) of the 2023 NFL draft, and he rushed for 70 yards on 3.2 yards per attempt and caught seven passes for an additional 43 yards in six games as a rookie. The 49ers claimed him off waivers in December after the Jets released him, but he never appeared in a game for them. San Francisco's running back room now includes Christian McCaffrey, Isaac Guerendo, Patrick Taylor Jr., 2025 fifth-round pick Jordan James and undrafted rookie Corey Kiner. Jake Ferguson's $52 million contract exposes Cowboys' draft mistake
Jake Ferguson's new contract should be a happy day for the Cowboys front office. A fourth round pick turned into Dak Prescott's security blanket for the future. But beneath the high-fives and congratulations is an underhanded admittance that Dallas whiffed on a draft pick not too long ago. A year after Ferguson was drafted, the Cowboys selected tight end Luke Schoonmaker in the second round of the 2023 draft. At the time, Ferguson only had 19 receptions for 174 yards his rookie year. Dalton Schultz was the starter that season but the Cowboys moved on from him. Schoonmaker, out of the University of Michigan, was expected to be an excellent blocking and pass-catching tight end. Instead it was Ferguson who stood out as a secure target over the middle while Schoonmaker struggled. The former Wolverine only had 27 receptions for 241 yards and one touchdown last season. He hasn't proven worthy of a second round investment. The Ferguson contract shows the Cowboys front office is admitting defeat on Schoonmaker. He has two years left on his rookie deal and still has a chance to prove himself, but Ferguson has taken the mantle as the primary tight end. It will take an injury or catastrophic shift if Dallas was to ever view Schoonmaker as a good pick. It's a rare miss for a front office that has drafted some elite talent. LeBron James and Maverick Carter were seen with Nikola Jokic's agent
There has been a lot of talk lately that LeBron James, one way or another, is on his way out as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers and that they will look to essentially replace him with another superstar within the next couple of years. The belief is that the Lakers will try to go after either Giannis Antetokounmpo or Nikola Jokić next summer or during the summer of 2027. They reportedly want to keep a lot of salary cap space free for that purpose, which has led some to feel that they will essentially punt the next season or two and not try to win the NBA championship during that time. On his Instagram account, Misko Raznatovic, Jokic's agent, posted a photo of him with James and James' business manager, Maverick Carter, along with a cryptic caption. 'The summer of 2025 is the perfect time to make big plans for the fall of 2026!' This will undoubtedly spark speculation about James' future beyond the next handful of months. There have already been many rumors that he will eventually ask the Lakers to trade him soon, even though he exercised his player option for the 2025-26 season. Jokic, the three-time NBA MVP, who many still feel is the best basketball player in the world, can opt out of his current contract in the 2027 offseason. He just became the third player in league history to average a triple-double for an entire season, but he lost out on the 2024-25 regular-season MVP award to the Oklahoma City Thunder's Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
