Ancelotti to leave Real Madrid and become coach of Brazil

TimesLIVE13-05-2025
Italian Carlo Ancelotti, one of the most decorated managers in world football, will become Brazil coach after leaving Real Madrid at the end of the season, the Brazilian FA (CBF) said on Monday after finally landing their first-choice candidate.
The 65-year-old Ancelotti has enjoyed four hugely successful years in his second tenure at the Spanish giants but they are set to finish this season without a trophy.
He is set to be replaced at the Bernabeu by former Real midfielder Xabi Alonso, with sources close to the 41-year-old former Spain international saying he has agreed a two-year deal with the option to extend it by an extra year.
'Ancelotti begins his mission next week,' the CBF said in a statement. 'He will meet CBF officials to finalise the preliminary list of players called up for the World Cup qualifiers against Ecuador and Paraguay next month. On the 26th, in Brazil, the coach will announce the final squad.'
Earlier.. Carlo Ancelotti: "The day I will leave, whether today or a year from now, the first thing I'm going to do is THANK REAL MADRID for EVERYTHING."
Good luck in your new stage 👏🏻

Brazilian soccer sources said Ancelotti will sign a one-year deal to become the world's highest-paid national team coach ahead of the 2026 World Cup, with the option to extend his contract. Real have yet to announce Ancelotti's departure.
'Bringing Carlo Ancelotti to coach Brazil is more than a strategic move. It is a statement to the world that we are determined to regain football's top spot,' CBF President Ednaldo Rodrigues said in the statement.
'He is the greatest coach in history and now he is at the helm of the greatest national team on the planet. Together, we will write new chapters in the glorious history of Brazilian football.'
The CBF's announcement confirms a highly anticipated move, ending a saga that has rumbled on for years.
A maior Seleção da história do futebol agora será liderada pelo técnico mais vitorioso do mundo. Rodrigues first acknowledged in an exclusive interview with Reuters more than two years ago that he intended to sign Ancelotti, saying 'it would be a no-brainer' having him in charge after coach Tite left after a heartbreaking loss on penalties to Croatia in the 2022 World Cup quarterfinals.
Rodrigues was unable to lure Ancelotti away from Real then and when the Italian extended his Real contract for two more years in December 2023 it appeared to end any chances of him taking over the five-times world champions any time soon.
However, after Brazil's new manager Dorival Jr was fired in March after just over a year in the job due to a series of bad results, Rodrigues turned to Ancelotti again.
The Italian had a year remaining on his contract but Real's underwhelming season and his desire to coach Brazil have led to a mutual agreement to part ways, soccer sources added.
An official announcement regarding a managerial change is expected before Real's last game of the season at home to Real Sociedad on May 25, when Ancelotti should receive a fitting farewell to recognise his great success with the club.
His replacement Alonso, 43, who said on Friday that he was leaving Bayer Leverkusen after guiding them to a domestic double last term, will join Real before the inaugural Club World Cup in the US from June 14 to July 14, club sources said.
When Ancelotti was lured back to Madrid for a second spell three years ago, after the departure of club great Zinedine Zidane, the Italian knew that his only mission was to increase Real's trophy haul and he did not disappoint.
He became the first manager to capture titles in each of Europe's top five leagues — England, Spain, Germany, Italy and France — and has guided Real to two Champions League and LaLiga doubles in three seasons.
Ancelotti's Madrid silverware includes three Champions League titles, two Club World Cups, three European Super Cups, two LaLiga titles, two Spanish Cups, two Spanish Super Cups and one Intercontinental Cup.

Springboks want to keep momentum going against Italy

The Springboks want to build on the momentum built up in their big win over the Barbarians against Italy this weekend. The Springboks are aiming to keep the momentum going from their strong season-opening win over the Barbarians when they take on Italy in the first Test of the incoming series at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday evening (kick-off 5:10pm). After an impressive 54-7 victory against the BaaBaas, the Boks are eager to kick it up a notch, with them naming a strong and experienced side for the opening Italian Test. If things go the way they have planned, they will likely make a slew of changes for the second match in Gqeberha (formerly Port Elizabeth) next weekend, with coach Rassie Erasmus saying the players already know who will be playing next week. 'Next week's team has already been announced internally. So the guys playing next week know who they are. But obviously if things don't go right (in the first Test) we can change a few things,' explained Erasmus. 'Our plan is to try and get our things right and sort our things out. We haven't made many changes from last week. So we would like to see us controlling the game and doing what we want to do well in the game. 'That's from the scrum to breakdown, attack and kicking game. And I am sure Italy will try to rip us out of our system. So it will be up to us to make sure they don't do that.' Don't underestimate Italy Although the Boks are heavy favourites against a weakened Italian team that left a number of senior players at home, Erasmus says that they cannot be underestimated and have to be given the respect they deserve. 'This is not the Italy of old. We remember the importance of playing them in the 2019 World Cup pool game. It was a vital game and we were very nervy about it. There was a red card that swung it our way. A lot of the guys in this team recall that match,' said Erasmus. 'They used to be a flamboyant team that ran from everywhere. Last year, they had a good year. They manned up in the first two games of the Six Nations. But they've only got two United Rugby Championship teams to pick from, and they tend to run out of players. 'We expect passion and a physicality (from them) that we need to handle. They have a good, structured kicking game. I wouldn't say they're a conservative team, but they're not the Italy of three years ago.'

Mbappe ‘better' and ready for Real Madrid against Dortmund

"He's better, he's been recovering, tomorrow morning we will decide (if he starts)," Alonso said. Kylian Mbappe reacts during the FIFA Club World Cup 2025 round of 16 football match between Spain's Real Madrid and Italy's Juventus at the Hard Rock Stadium in Miami last Tuesday. Photo: CHANDAN KHANNA / AFP Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso said superstar striker Kylian Mbappe is 'better' ahead of the Club World Cup quarter-final clash against Borussia Dortmund on Saturday, but would not confirm if the Frenchman will start. Mbappe missed all three group matches at the tournament with a stomach bug but returned as a substitute when Madrid edged Juventus 1-0 to reach the last eight. 'He's better, he's been recovering, tomorrow morning we will decide (if he starts),' Alonso told reporters Friday, before saying it might not mean 21-year-old Gonzalo had to drop out of the team. 'They can (play together), depending on the moment and the needs, they are complementary, if the context asks for it and I haven't ruled it out by any means,' continued Alonso. The Spaniard said he wanted the players 'to know first' before revealing what his plans were for the match at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey. Brazilian winger Rodrygo has not featured much in Alonso's plans at the tournament and when he has appeared, has not been able to contribute significantly. 'I spoke yesterday with him and he's got a positive mentality, he's willing and ready when he's needed,' said Alonso. One player who has impressed Alonso is 20-year-old playmaker Arda Guler, who struggled for game-time under Carlo Ancelotti last season. 'It's the moment to invest in a process with Arda, we will push him to develop and mature, but knowing that he can make mistakes, and accept them,' added the Spaniard. Saturday's game is a repeat of the 2024 UEFA Champions League final, in which Madrid defeated Dortmund 2-0 at Wembley. If Dortmund do not retain fond memories of that night, they do enter the contest armed with plenty of knowledge of Real's new coach having come up against Alonso's Bayer Leverkusen over the past three years. – Kovac: 'We believe' – 'You see a lot of Bayer Leverkusen at the moment in Real Madrid because he is implementing his style of football,' said Dortmund coach Niko Kovac, with the Spanish giants operating with a back three at the tournament. 'He is playing the same shape, but the quality of players is higher than at Leverkusen. 'I would say in three weeks you can't change the world, it takes time, but we have seen some very good stuff. It will be interesting and hopefully we can compete.' Dortmund are returning to the MetLife Stadium, just outside New York City, where they began their Club World Cup campaign with a 0-0 draw against Fluminense. Now they are hoping to emulate the Brazilians, who qualified for the semi-finals on Friday with a 2-1 victory over Al-Hilal. 'When we started the tournament we didn't know how it would go,' admitted Kovac, whose team arrived in the United States after finishing fourth in the German Bundesliga. 'Of course we are very happy because this is a great tournament and the further on we go we can see the passion and intensity that there is. 'We played Fluminense who have made it to the semis, and yet people laughed when I said they were a top team. 'Now we want to stay here and we hope and believe we can get through to the next round.'

Handre Pollard stoked with current Springbok flyhalf depth

The Springboks currently have great depth at flyhalf and Handre Pollard is loving the competition amongst the players. Just a few years ago the Springboks were struggling with their depth at flyhalf, but are now styling in the department with a slew of top class players vying for the right to be considered first choice, and current top dog Handre Pollard is loving it. Going into the 2019 World Cup, and during the first half the next World Cup phase, the Boks only boasted two frontline flyhalves in Pollard and Elton Jantjies. But the demise of Jantjies, due to his off field problems, coincided with a rise of others, starting with utility back Damian Willemse, who took over the position in a pinch. The year before the 2023 World Cup, Manie Libbok followed, taking his chance and making a splash, which earned him a spot in their double winning campaign in France. Last year it was the turn of Sacha Feinberg-Mngomezulu to step out of the shadows, and burst onto the scene as a generational talent. Currently Pollard, Feinberg-Mngomezulu and Libbok are the top three Bok flyhalf options, but some youngsters are bubbling under as well, with Jordan Hendrikse having already made his international debut. This sees the Bok flyhalf stocks at a booming high, and Pollard is thrilled with the current competition for the position, explaining that it only strengthens the team. 'I think it is absolutely brilliant. We are blessed with so much talent in this country, and as long as we keep it healthy, like it is at the moment, we can push each other as hard as we can for the benefit of the team,' said Pollard at a Bok press conference ahead of their clash against Italy on Saturday. Push each other 'The best thing I can do is push them every day in training and vice versa, they push me. With all the different skill sets and things we can do well, we learn from each other and try to evolve our games together. 'If I can teach them something, and they can teach me something, we are all winners. As long as it is healthy, and long may it be so.' Pollard was also happy for his good friend Jesse Kriel, who will become the Boks 67th official captain when he leads the team out at Loftus on Saturday, after he led the side for the first time in their non-Test against invitational team in the Barbarians in Cape Town last weekend. 'Jesse is probably the hardest-working guy I know. He has been that way since we met at age 18. For me, there is nobody more deserving of the captaincy. As a player, you want to follow someone who leads by example,' said Pollard. 'We have Siya (Kolisi), and we know he will be back, but Jesse is a guy that we can look at and say 'this guy leads from the front every day and in every single training session.' That is the kind of guy you want to play for. 'He is a great friend of mine, and we all have the utmost respect for him. That is why it is such an easy transition for him to slot in as captain. I am very proud of him.'
