Liverpool chief admits Alexander-Arnold disappointment and sends parting message
Trent Alexander-Arnold left his boyhood club Liverpool to join Real Madrid and club chairman Tom Werner has now given an insight into the process - and admitted his disappointment Liverpool chairman Tom Werner has conceded that the club hierarchy were disappointed when Trent Alexander-Arnold informed them he wanted to leave. Alexander-Arnold turned down the offer of a new contract with his boyhood club in order to join Real Madrid this summer. While he was originally set to join Real as a free agent when his Liverpool deal expired on June 30, Alexander-Arnold ended up leaving earlier. The Spanish giants paid Liverpool £8.4million to sign him early, so he could play for them at the Club World Cup. His decision was the opposite of Mohamed Salah and Virgil van Dijk, who decided to sign new contracts, and was met with fury by some supporters, who accused him of betraying the club. Emotions were high in the final few games of the season and Werner has admitted that owners Fenway Sports Group were similarly upset initially. "We do respect the fact that Trent has moved on,' Werner told The Liverpool Echo. 'I told someone recently this story about seeing Trent on the last weekend of the season, with Billy [Hogan, chief executive] and I just wanted him to know from me personally we are and were as a club thankful for all his contributions. "He showed me a picture when he was seven years old, when he was a young kid at the academy, and I have a lot of fondness for all that he has done and so it is time for him to move and time for us to replace him. "We do wish him well and I understand the emotions of supporters who were disappointed and we were disappointed too but it is overshadowed by my wonderful memories of him. "I'll never forget that pass he made, the corner he took, for the fourth goal against Barcelona. That was just a work of genius and as a football fan, watching some of his assists, the way he would pass the ball 30-plus yards to a specific point and create a goal was wonder Real Madrid are delighted!" Alexander-Arnold has made three appearances for Real at the Club World Cup and is trying to get used to his new team-mates and the language barrier. He is learning Spanish and says the integration has been made easier by manager – and former Liverpool star – Xabi Alonso. 'Every player is impressing me,' Alexander-Arnold told reporters after the 3-0 win over RB Salzburg. 'From when I played against Real Madrid, (I knew) all the players are world class. But just the way the lads are, when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect. 'But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing. It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform. 'The settlement period now is done and it's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.' Vinicius Stars as Real Madrid Reach Club World Cup last 16
VINICIUS JUNIOR scored one goal and made another with a touch of class as Real Madrid sealed their place in the last 16 of the Club World Cup with a 3-0 win over Salzburg on Thursday. The Brazil star opened the scoring after a superb defence-splitting pass by Jude Bellingham on 40 minutes and then set up Federico Valverde for the all-important second goal in first-half stoppage time. Gonzalo Garcia wrapped up the win late on with his second goal of the tournament, and the result means Xabi Alonso's team end the first round of FIFA's new tournament unbeaten. They go through to the knockout stage as Group H winners on seven points, setting up a last-16 tie against Juventus in Miami on Tuesday. "Vini had a great game. It's not just his goal and his assist that will stay with me, but also the sacrifices he made for the team and the work he did defensively," said Alonso after Vinicius scored a first club goal in nine appearances since mid-April. Salzburg go out as Al Hilal of Saudi Arabia progress in second place behind Real after defeating already eliminated Pachuca of Mexico 2-0 in Nashville. They play Manchester City in the last 16. Madrid are adjusting in the United States to life under new coach Alonso and were again without top scorer Kylian Mbappe, with the Frenchman thus far not having played at the Club World Cup as he recovers from illness. "We were really stable and really mature in the first half. We controlled the game well and didn't rush things," Alonso added. "There is still a lot to improve, but we are moving in the right direction." There was still plenty of star appeal even without Mbappe for the 64,811 fans who filled Lincoln Financial Field in Philadelphia almost to capacity -- they reserved their loudest cheers for Bellingham and spirits were not dampened by wet, fresh conditions as the blistering heatwave of recent days suddenly lifted. Alonso opts for back three Alonso opted, as during his time in charge of Bayer Leverkusen in Germany, for a back three with Aurelien Tchouameni in between Antonio Rudiger and Dean Huijsen. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Fran Garcia played as wing-backs. Real won 5-1 when the teams met in the Champions League in January with Vinicius scoring twice, and the Brazilian was again heavily involved in putting the Austrian team to the sword here. He was denied by goalkeeper Christian Zawieschitzky when clean through on 20 minutes, but made up for that by getting the breakthrough as the interval approached. The goal owed much to a fantastic pass by Bellingham which found Vinicius in between the two Salzburg centre-backs. He held off two chasing defenders and scored with an early left-foot shot low into the corner. It was a 22nd goal of the season in all competitions and one that delighted those backing Real in the crowd. Petar Ratkov had a chance for Salzburg after Arda Guler was dispossessed just outside his own area, but Real scored again to make it 2-0 almost on the half-time whistle. When a rather aimless pass forward by Guler was deflected by Salzburg's Mamady Diambou, Vinicius pounced on the loose ball and continued into the area before producing a clever back-heel to set up Valverde for the goal. Salzburg now needed a favour from Al Hilal to stay in the competition although they did continue to make a fight of it and had chances to reduce the deficit in the second half. Nevertheless they were picked off on the counter as Madrid got their third with six minutes of the 90 remaining. A ball forward by Alexander-Arnold should have been cut out by Joane Gadou but the young defender's touch was intercepted by Gonzalo Garcia and the young forward ran through before clipping a shot beyond the goalkeeper.

‘We hope he's back soon': Real Madrid manager Xabi Alonso still unsure on Kylian Mbappe's availability for Club World Cup
Real Madrid coach Xabi Alonso is still not confident about star forward Kylian Mbappe's availability in the ongoing Club World Cup. Mbappe, who was hospitalized last week with acute gastroenteritis, hasn't taken part in any of the group games Real played in the tournament, the latest being a 3-0 win vs RB Salzburg. 'I don't want to be optimistic and get ahead of myself, but we need him because he's a top player, one of the best in the world. We hope he's back soon,' Alonso said when asked about Mbappé's availability for the round of 16 game against Juventus on Tuesday. 'We need him and we want him back as soon as possible and in the best possible condition,' Alonso added. The 26-year-old Mbappe was Madrid's top scorer last season, with 43 goals in 56 appearances. He had been following specific medical treatment to recover from gastroenteritis, Madrid said, but has missed two games since being discharged from hospital. Mbappe has also been in the news for other reasons lately with the French star has filing a complaint against former employers Paris Saint-Germain accusing the French team of 'moral harassment' during the final season of his stay at the club. The Paris prosecutor's office confirmed on Thursday that the forward had stated in his complaint that he was 'lofted' by the club after he refused to sign a contract extension before the 2023-24 season. In France, lofting means isolating a player from the main squad for sporting, administrative, or disciplinary reasons. The Ligue 1 club reportedly sidelined the France captain once he refused to extend his contract. The striker was left off a preseason tour to Japan and South Korea and forced to train with fringe players. Mbappe and PSG are in a dispute for a sum of 55 million euros ($61 million) in unpaid wages, which Mbappe, currently playing for Real Madrid, claims he is owed by the French heavyweight club.

Trent Alexander-Arnold speaks out about Real Madrid as he makes Liverpool point
Trent Alexander-Arnold has not been at Real Madrid for long, but the England international's new team-mates have already made an impression following his move from Liverpool Trent Alexander-Arnold has admitted that while he knew his Real Madrid team-mates were going to be world-class, he didn't expect them to be so friendly. The England international moved to Los Blancos after the La Liga giants agreed to pay Liverpool £10million to sign him a month ahead of schedule. He was initially going to move to the Spanish capital as a free agent, but Real's desire to include Alexander-Arnold in their Club World Cup squad prompted them to pay a fee to sign him earlier. In their final group match in the USA, Xabi Alonso deployed the right-back for the full 90 minutes as they beat RB Salzburg 3-0. It was the latest sign that the defender is further settling into life at the 15-time European champions. Even Alexander-Arnold, who knew the quality they'd possess having faced them five times for his boyhood club, is surprised by the way his new team-mates have taken to him. Speaking to reporters after Real overcame the Austrian side, Alexander-Arnold said: "Every player is impressing me. From when I played against Real Madrid, [I knew] all the players are world class. "But just the way the lads are; when you come in, you expect it to be very intimidating, you don't know what to expect. But it was very warm, very welcoming, they made me feel at home straight away, which was amazing. "It allows me to play as well as I can and today coming into the game, I was confident to go and perform. The settlement period now is done. "It's about kicking on and being the best player that I can be and giving the best for the team and helping the team win as many games as possible starting with this competition.' Alexander-Arnold won two Premier League titles, the Champions League, the FA Cup, the Club World Cup (in its previous format) and two League Cups during his time at Liverpool. Throughout his time at Anfield, he contributed 67 assists, more than any other defender in Premier League history. When he arrived at his new club, he endeared himself to his colleagues and supporters by speaking in Spanish during his unveiling. While that has gone some way to helping him make a good impression, Alexander-Arnold admits he is still struggling to get to grips with the language. He added: "Of course speaking and being a part of the conversation is harder. You work hard to try and understand what people are saying and be a part of it. "But the manager speaks to me a lot individually to make sure I understand everything that gets said. The meetings are in Spanish so he goes out his way and the staff go out the way to make sure I understand the game plan. So there's differences but it's just football.' Real progressed into the last 16 of the competition as group winners. They started the campaign with a 1-1 draw with Saudi Arabian side Al Hilal, before overcoming Mexican team Pachuca and then Salzburg. They face Juventus, who were demolished 5-2 by Manchester City in their final group match, in the next round on July 1.
