‘Hard times reveal true friends': Singapore thanks Malaysia for evacuating citizen from troubled Iran
SINGAPORE, June 24 — Malaysia's assistance in evacuating a Singaporean from Iran not only reinforces the close and enduring relationship between the two countries, but also serves as a testament to Asean solidarity, said Singapore Foreign Affairs Minister Dr Vivian Balakrishnan.
In a letter to his Malaysian counterpart, Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan, Balakrishnan said the support is also a real-life demonstration of the importance of the Asean Guidelines on Consular Assistance for Asean Member States to help one another's citizens.
'Hard times reveal true friends. We sincerely appreciate your government's readiness to extend assistance in times of crisis,' he wrote in the letter.
A copy of the letter was shared by Balakrishnan on his Facebook page on Monday, where he also stated that he was grateful to the governments of Malaysia and Oman for their invaluable support in safely evacuating Singaporeans from Iran.
In the letter, he noted that the swift and professional action taken by Wisma Putra Consular Division and the Malaysian embassies in Tehran and Ashgabat allowed Singapore to operationalise an evacuation plan under difficult circumstances.
'Their prompt assistance, particularly securing the necessary accommodation, transportation, and entry permits into Turkmenistan, was crucial in ensuring the safety of our citizens,' he added.
Meanwhile, Balakrishnan also wrote a separate letter to Omani Foreign Minister Badr bin Hamad al-Busaidi to express his gratitude for Oman's prompt and effective assistance.
He said Singapore remains deeply concerned about the escalation of tensions in the Middle East, and that various mediation efforts, including those by Al-Busaidi, are crucial for de-escalation.
Earlier, the Singapore government expressed its deepest appreciation and gratitude to the governments of Malaysia and Oman for facilitating the safe return of its citizens from Iran.
In a statement, a spokesperson for the Foreign Affairs Ministry said that a Singaporean was evacuated from Iran to Ashgabat, Turkmenistan, with a group of Malaysians and other nationals, with the assistance of the Malaysian government, while a family of three Singaporeans was evacuated from Tehran to Muscat, Oman with the help of the Omani government.

Anwar said he found it puzzling that retirements, whether of civil servants, judges or other officers, had come into question. 'There are procedures for when one reaches their retirement age. One does not automatically get their tenure extended… In this case, I was criticised,' he said in his speech at the Prime Minister's Department's monthly assembly. Anwar said there appeared to be a campaign to pressure the government to either extend or end specific tenures, which he warned could politicise institutions meant to remain independent. 'If you understand the Federal Constitution, you would know the process,' he said. 'There's a commission, the prime minister, the Yang di-Pertuan Agong. Then, it (an appointment) is presented for discussion with the Conference of Rulers. So all those steps must be followed.' Amid talk of lobbying, Anwar said this was precisely why he had deliberately avoided meeting with senior judges apart from the chief justice. The judiciary is currently facing a series of impending retirements. Chief Justice Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat retires on July 1. Her expected successor, Court of Appeal president Abang Iskandar Abang Hashim, is due to retire just a day later, while Federal Court judge Nallini Pathmanathan will retire in August. None of them has received an extension. The legal fraternity, including the Malaysian Bar, has called for the tenure of all three judges to be extended, citing concerns over the possibility of political interference in judicial appointments and promotions. Anwar also repeated his defence of his non-involvement in two high-profile court decisions: one involving Najib Razak, who received a discharge not amounting to an acquittal in the SRC International case, and the other involving Muar MP Syed Saddiq Syed Abdul Rahman, who was fully acquitted of corruption charges. He said public reactions to both cases had been inconsistent and seemed to be politically driven. Anwar said the judiciary must ultimately be shielded from undue pressure, whether political or otherwise. 'Not according to political tastes, not according to group preferences, and not according to the wishes of lobbyists,' he added.

Two Sabah state assemblymen charged alongside businessman for alleged bribery over Sabah mining license
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Two state assemblyman pleaded not guilty in court today for receiving bribes from businessman Datuk Albert Tei amounting to RM350,000 in total for assistance in getting approval for a mineral prospecting license. Sindumin assemblyman Datuk Yusof Yacob is accused of receiving RM200,000 in cash from Tei on March 6, 2023 at the rooftop restaurant in Hilton hotel at around 2pm in exchange for help in the application and approval process for a mineral prospecting license for Syarikat Nusa Kini Sdn Bhd in Sabah. Tanjung Batu assemblyman and Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Assistant Minister Datuk Andi Muhammad Suryady Bandy was charged for receiving RM150,000 cash from Tei on May 12, 2023 at 11pm in front of his residence along Jalan Pantai, Sembulan in exchange for help in application and approval process of the mineral prospecting license for Syarikat Sinaran Hayat Sdn Bhd in Sabah. Both are Sabah-based companies where Tei is a partner. Tei, 37, also pleaded not guilty for offering the bribes. Special Corruption Court Judge Jason Juga set August 5 for pretrial case management Bail for the two assemblymen was set at RM50,000 with RM10,000 fully deposited today with a local surety and they were also asked to surrender his passport. Bail for Tei was set at RM60,000 for both charges with RM15,000 to be deposited today and surrender his passport. They were all also asked to check in with the nearest Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) office once every two months until the case is over. The charges against Andi and Yusof were under Section 16(a)(A) of the MACC Act 2009 for accepting bribes while Tei was charged under Section 16(b)(A) of the Act for offering bribes. They carry sentences of imprisonment up to twenty years and fines not less than five times the amount or value of the bribe. It has been reported that Tei was the businessman behind several videos implicating politicians in corrupt activities between 2023 and 2024, in exchange for assistance in processing mineral exploration licence applications. The videos were published by online portal MalaysiaKini before being handed to MACC for investigation. Some 100 supporters for both assemblymen also came to court but were not allowed into the courtroom due to the lack of space. Parti Gagasan Rakyat Sabah secretary Datuk Mohamed Razali Razi attended the proceedings. Yusof and Andi were represented by lawyers Datuk Ram Singh, Shahlan Jufri and Ridzwandean Bukhari M Borhan. Tei was represented by Edward Paul. The deputy public prosecutor was Nurul Izzati Sapiflee and Rustam Sanip.

Jeffrey Kitingan denies involvement in Sabah mining scandal, vows legal action over RM1.78m payout claim
KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan has denied claims that he received RM1.78 million linked to a mining scandal in Sabah. He said the allegation, published by a news portal, was baseless and politically motivated by his critics in an attempt to destabilise, smear and topple the current Sabah government, Berita Harian reported today. 'I have never received any funds related to mining applications or any alleged scandal,' he was quoted as saying. He described the allegation as a fabrication by desperate political players trying to interfere with Sabah politics. 'This is a tactic that has been used since the 1960s,' he said. Kitingan, who is also Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president, said his party has never applied for any mining licence nor was it involved in any mining activities. He described himself as a supporter of the Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA), adding that mining goes against STAR's conservation stance. Kitingan said he and party members are fully cooperating with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and have submitted detailed statements to aid its investigations. 'This is the price we pay in our struggle to reclaim Sabah's rights,' he was quoted as saying. Kitingan also claimed that earlier statements by whistleblowers had cleared STAR and Parti Bersatu Sabah of wrongdoing. As such, he said he will take all available legal action over what he described as malicious and false accusations. This includes legal action against the news portal that published the report. 'We expect more false allegations and slander. 'It would not be surprising if certain parties try to exploit this to shift Sabah's political landscape,' he was quoted as saying.
