Jeffrey Kitingan denies involvement in Sabah mining scandal, vows legal action over RM1.78m payout claim

Malay Maila day ago

KOTA KINABALU, June 30 — Sabah Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Seri Jeffrey Kitingan has denied claims that he received RM1.78 million linked to a mining scandal in Sabah.
He said the allegation, published by a news portal, was baseless and politically motivated by his critics in an attempt to destabilise, smear and topple the current Sabah government, Berita Harian reported today.
'I have never received any funds related to mining applications or any alleged scandal,' he was quoted as saying.
He described the allegation as a fabrication by desperate political players trying to interfere with Sabah politics.
'This is a tactic that has been used since the 1960s,' he said.
Kitingan, who is also Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (STAR) president, said his party has never applied for any mining licence nor was it involved in any mining activities.
He described himself as a supporter of the Nature Conservation Agreement (NCA), adding that mining goes against STAR's conservation stance.
Kitingan said he and party members are fully cooperating with the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and have submitted detailed statements to aid its investigations.
'This is the price we pay in our struggle to reclaim Sabah's rights,' he was quoted as saying.
Kitingan also claimed that earlier statements by whistleblowers had cleared STAR and Parti Bersatu Sabah of wrongdoing.
As such, he said he will take all available legal action over what he described as malicious and false accusations.
This includes legal action against the news portal that published the report.
'We expect more false allegations and slander.
'It would not be surprising if certain parties try to exploit this to shift Sabah's political landscape,' he was quoted as saying.

Perak Customs seize smuggled drugs, some hidden in air mattresses, worth nearly RM1m in Selangor

IPOH, July 1 — The Perak Royal Malaysian Customs Department (JKDM) seized drugs worth nearly RM1 million in a raid in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. Its director Mohd Nadzri Arifin said in the 2.45pm raid on June 5, the Customs Department uncovered a large drug smuggling attempt involving nearly 10 kilograms of cannabis flowers concealed in courier parcels. 'The raid involved collaboration with officers from the Customs Headquarters Narcotics Branch and the Ipoh Enforcement Division. 'During the inspection of a suspicious parcel, officers discovered eight plastic packages containing dried plant materials believed to be cannabis flowers weighing approximately 9,858 grams,' he said in a press conference at the Perak Customs Department headquarters here. He said authorities estimated the street value of the drugs to be RM966,084. Mohd Nadzri said preliminary investigations revealed that the drugs were intended to be smuggled abroad, specifically to the United Kingdom, via courier services. 'The dried cannabis was hidden inside air mattress and inflatable pool boxes to avoid detection,' he said. He added the case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries the mandatory death penalty or life imprisonment upon conviction. He said no arrests were made in the raid and noted that the sender made a false declaration and failed to obtain the required permits. He added that investigations are ongoing to identify the individuals or syndicate behind the attempted smuggling.

Not another Putra Heights: To prevent future gas pipeline fires, Selangor to draft new legal framework

HULU LANGAT, July 1 — The Selangor government will engage legal and technical experts to develop a new policy framework aimed at preventing future incidents like the gas pipeline fire that occurred in Putra Heights three months ago. Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said the move is part of a learning process and a necessary follow-up action in response to the incident that happened on April 1. 'This is one of the terms of reference, or duties, of that special committee, which will look into legal frameworks that can be enforced. 'The legal aspects can take various forms. It could be by-laws, new terms and conditions under the One-Stop Centre (OSC), state enactments, or even federal-level legislation.' Amirudin made the remarks after witnessing the signing of two memoranda of cooperation with three strategic partners - Universiti Selangor, the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC), and Central Spectrum (M) Sdn Bhd (CSSB) - to strengthen efforts in developing the state's water industry ecosystem. Yesterday, Amirudin announced that Selangor would establish a special committee to assess the full investigation report of the incident and draft long-term preventive measures, including proposing new regulations to ensure similar incidents do not recur. The committee will include representatives from the state and federal governments, Petronas, and relevant technical agencies. — Bernama
