Fireworks facility goes up in flames in Yolo County. CalFire battling wildfire, 7 missing
One person has been confirmed dead as of 3 p.m., July 2, as reported by the San Francisco Chronicle.
The explosion sparked a wildfire — called the "Oakdale Fire"—that led to a 78-acre blaze, as first reported by KCRA. As of 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, the fire was uncontained and still spreading, according to CalFire. Parts of Esparto have been evacuated.
It is unknown if the missing people worked at the warehouse or lived nearby.
At 5:50 p.m. Tuesday local fire crews responded to a call of an explosion in the largely rural area of Esparto, said Esparto Fire Protection District Chief Curtis Lawrence at a press briefing later that night.
The incident occurred near the Esparto/Madison area, specifically around County Road 23 and County Road 86A.
Responding crews confronted multiple fires at multiple commercial buildings on the site, said Lawrence and more firefighting resources were called in for support.
The fire chief said the cause of the explosion is being investigated by California's State Fire Marshal Arson and Bomb Unit.
The fire will take time to cool, and once it does, explosive experts must safely enter the site to assess and secure the area, according to the Yolo County Sheriff's Office, and is strongly urge everyone to continue avoiding the area for the next several days so that fire crews, law enforcement, and emergency personnel can do their jobs safely and effectively.
Esparto is a small rural community (population: 3,700) in Yolo County, approximately 40 miles west of Sacramento.

Shooting of elderly Pleasanton resident followed confrontation over alleged aninmal abuse, police say
A shooting in Pleasanton that left an elderly man with life-threatening injuries stemmed from a confrontation about alleged animal abuse, police said Monday. A 71-year-old resident was shot multiple times Saturday afternoon at his home on Vineyard Avenue between Bernal Avenue and Ewing Drive. The Pleasanton Police Department said Monday in a press release that preliminary findings indicate the shooting happened after the suspect, identified as a 50-year-old Joshua Kaplan, confronted the resident about the alleged abuse at his home. Witnesses told police about the confrontation at the home, but it was not clear what happened during the initial encounter that led to Kaplan shooting the victim at least six times, according to police. Police also said that at some point, the victim retrieved a shotgun, but it did not appear that the victim fired his weapon. Kaplan surrendered without incident after officers arrived at the scene. The victim was in stable condition as of Monday. Officers were investigating the animal abuse allegations, and the dog involved was taken to the East County Animal Shelter, police said. Kaplan was being held without bail at Santa Rita Jail in Dublin on charges of attempted murder and shooting into an inhabited dwelling. His first court appearance was scheduled for Wednesday.

Girls aged 11, 13, 14 detained in San Francisco in series of aggravated assaults
Three young girls, aged 11, 13 and 14, were detained in San Francisco over the weekend as suspects in a series of aggravated assaults, authorities said Monday. The San Francisco Police Department said in a press release Monday that the department is investigating at least five apparent unprovoked attacks involving a group of juveniles with similar suspect descriptions that began earlier this month. The department said multiple units, including plainclothes, investigations, special operations, and patrol, were working to identify the suspects. On Saturday at about 2:54 p.m., officers responded to 4th Street between Mission and Howard Streets in the city's South of Market area on a report of an assault. According to police, two victims reported they were assaulted by several juvenile females who then fled after bystanders stepped in to stop the attack. The victims were treated for injuries that were not life-threatening, police said. Investigators who were aware of the previous incidents were immediately able to access surveillance video of the attack and disseminate images of the suspects to officers on patrol. Plainclothes officers patrolling on the city's west side found a group of girls matching the images of the assault suspects at the Stonestown Galleria, police said. The girls were detained, and through the course of the investigation, officers developed probable cause to arrest two girls, ages 13 and 14. for assault likely to produce great bodily injury, police said. An 11-year-old girl was also detained and admonished, and after consulting with juvenile probation authorities, the officers were advised to release the suspects to their parents at the scene. "Violent attacks like these will never be tolerated, and the SFPD will use all resources available to ensure our city is safe," said Interim Police Chief Paul Yep said in a prepared statement. "I am extremely disappointed in the actions of these individuals, and they will be held accountable." Police said the investigations remain open and active, and anyone with information was asked to contact the SFPD at (415) 575-4444 or send a text to TIP411 and begin the message with "SFPD."
