US Revokes Foreign Terrorist Designation for Syria's HTS

MTV Lebanona day ago
President Donald Trump's administration on Monday revoked the foreign terrorist organization designation for Hay'at Tahrir al-Sham, as Washington moves to remove U.S. sanctions on Syria to help the country rebuild following years of a civil war.
In December, Islamist rebels led by HTS ousted Syria's former president Bashar al-Assad in a lightning offensive. Then-HTS leader Ahmed al-Sharaa became Syria's president and said he wanted to build an inclusive and democratic Syria.
HTS was previously known as al-Nusra Front when it was al-Qaeda's Syria branch. It broke off ties with al-Qaeda in 2016.
In May, Sharaa met with Trump in Riyadh where, in a major policy shift, the Republican president unexpectedly announced he would lift U.S. sanctions on Syria, prompting Washington to significantly ease its measures.
"This FTO revocation is an important step in fulfilling President Trump's vision of a stable, unified, and peaceful Syria," Secretary of State Marco Rubio said in a statement, adding that the revocation will come into effect on Tuesday.
Last week, Trump signed an executive order terminating U.S. sanctions program on Syria, a move that aims to end the country's isolation from the international financial system.
Syria's foreign ministry told Reuters that the lifting of sanctions on HTS was a "positive step toward correcting a course that previously hindered constructive engagement."
The written statement said Syria hoped the move would "contribute to the removal of remaining restrictions that continue to impact Syrian institutions and officials, and open the door to a rational, sovereign-based approach to international cooperation."
The ministry also said that Sharaa was planning to attend the upcoming United Nations General Assembly in September. The U.N. Security Council still has sanctions on both HTS and Sharaa himself, which require a Council decision to remove.

Hamas Deals Major Blow to Netanyahu before Trump Meeting: 6 Israeli Soldiers Dead, 10 Wounded in Firm Ambush North of Gaza

Six Israeli soldiers were killed, and 10 others were injured in a complex ambush carried out by the Palestinian resistance late Monday in northern Gaza, according to Zionist media outlets which underlined the loss of a soldier as well. The southern command of Israeli Army started an immediate investigation into one of the hardest security incidents that faced the occupation forces in Gaza. Hospitals were prepared to receive the casualties, and the Zionist social media websites were filled with moaning and groaning over the harsh account. According to the latest reports circulated by the Zionist media outlets, six soldiers were killed, and 10 others were injured in a firm ambush carried out by Al-Qassam Brigades, Hamas military wing, in Beit Hanoun, northern Gaza, late Monday. The incident occurred when resistance fighters detonated an explosive device against an armored vehicle carrying soldiers and then targeted a robot loaded with tons of ammunition by an anti-tank missile while it was being prepared. The resistance also targeted the Israeli rescue force that rushed into the scene. Residents of Ashkelon heard the sound of a 'huge explosion,' according to Israeli news websites, which reported that one of the wounded was a senior officer. 'The recent incident in northern Gaza is still ongoing—intense fire belts and major chaos on the ground. One soldier remains missing, vehicles are burning, and all had entered areas rigged with explosive devices and were hit with RPG rounds,' the Zionist media reported. Israeli media added that several Israeli soldiers were burned in northern Gaza. Wounded soldiers are being evacuated from northern Gaza via military helicopters to five hospitals: Assuta Hospital in Ashdod, Soroka Hospital in Bersheba, Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva, Tel HaShomer Hospital in Ramat Gan, and Ein Kerem Hospital in Jerusalem, according to the Zionist media. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, due to meet the US President Donald Trump at the White House, has been briefed on the major ambush of Israeli soldiers in northern Gaza, according to Israeli media reports. Netanyahu also met with the US special envoy to the Middle East Steve Witkoff and Secretary of State Marco Rubio in Washington. The resistance ambush in Gaza is seen as a major blow dealt by Hamas to Netanyahu whose insistence on continuing the genocidal war on Gaza has been delaying the deal.

From diplomacy to disaster: Netanyahu's trip derailed by Gaza ambush

Report by Amal Shehadeh, English adaptation by Laetithia Harb Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu had hoped that Israelis would wake up Tuesday to headlines celebrating his successful talks with U.S. President Donald Trump. Instead, the day brought a major crisis in Gaza and the potential setback of a deal expected to be announced from Washington. The crisis was marked by the killing of five soldiers and the wounding of 14 others in one of the deadliest ambushes the Israeli Army has faced in 21 months of war. The shock reverberated across the country, with Israelis describing it as a 'black morning,' while Netanyahu's government of Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich maintained their refusal to consider a halt to the war. Despite the serious security incident, Netanyahu is pressing on with efforts to frame his visit as historic, even proposing the nomination of Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize. At the center of the Washington discussions is what Israeli officials have called the 'package of carrots'—a reference to the diplomatic incentives and arrangements being negotiated. These include a proposed ceasefire in Gaza, a prisoner exchange, and the use of Syria as a conduit for regional coordination. In fact, Trump has sent an envoy to Damascus in hopes of advancing negotiations on an Israel–Syria agreement. He has also dispatched Steve Witkoff to Qatar in a bid to accelerate the deal before the end of the week. According to sources familiar with the president's plans, Trump sees a Syria–Israel accord as a strategic building block that would help Netanyahu manage the Gaza front. On the second day of negotiations, Netanyahu outlined his conditions for halting the war, which include the full dismantling of Hamas' military and administrative infrastructure/ governing capabilities. He also emphasized efforts to weaken the group by promoting the displacement of Gaza residents—a file entrusted to Defense Minister Israel Katz. Katz is overseeing the creation of a designated facility in Rafah intended to house up to 600,000 Palestinians. The site labeled the 'humanitarian city' would tightly restrict movement, barring residents from leaving once they enter/ would prohibit Palestinians from leaving once they enter.

Kremlin says arming Ukraine prolongs war after Trump pledges more weapons

The Kremlin on Tuesday warned that sending arms to Ukraine only serves to prolong the conflict, a day after U.S. President Donald Trump pledged "more weapons" for Ukraine to defend itself. "It is obvious, of course, that these actions probably do not align with attempts to promote a peaceful resolution," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov was quoted by Russian news agencies as saying in a briefing. Peskov also criticized European countries for "actively contributing to the continuation of hostilities" with their arms supplies to Ukraine. AFP
