HDMI 2.2 spec released with 96Gbps bandwidth and 16K support
As with previous major HDMI revisions, the major update with version 2.2 is the increase in bandwidth. HDMI 2.2 supports up to 96Gbps bandwidth, twice that of HDMI 2.1 that came before it. However, since this is HDMI Forum we are talking about, and some amount of muddying of water is expected, HDMI 2.2 will also apply to devices supporting 64Gbps, 80Gbps, and the full 96Gbps bandwidth.
As usual, there is a big attention-grabbing resolution number to go with this new spec. This time, we are getting support for up to 16K resolution at 60Hz or 12K resolution at 120Hz using display stream compression or chroma subsampling.
But while it's easy to roll your eyes at these figures, a big bandwidth increase like this also brings with it improvements at more practical resolutions. For example, with the recent launch of 4K 240Hz monitors, you can achieve this resolution and refresh rate combination at 10-bit or 12-bit color without having to use display stream compression or chroma subsampling, something that wasn't possible before. Similarly, you can achieve true 8K 60Hz 4:4:4 at 10-bit or 12-bit without compression.
Other features in the new spec include Latency Indication Protocol (LIP), dynamic HDR support, source-based tone mapping (SBTM), enhanced eARC, enhanced gaming features, including VRR, ALLM, and QFT, Quick Media Switching (QMS), and HDMI cable power.
To go along with the new spec, HDMI Forum has also announced a new standard for the cables that will be required to achieve this bandwidth. The previous Ultra High Speed HDMI standard used for HDMI 2.1 transmission will no longer be adequate, and you will have to look for the new Ultra96 HDMI branding on cables to ensure compatibility. As with Ultra High Speed HDMI, HDMI Forum will be testing and certifying cables that meet the Ultra96 HDMI spec and such cables will have the Ultra96 Certified Cable label with hologram and QR code that customers can scan to verify.

I genuinely think that this thing has a chance to be a massive hit with people who can't fork over the cash for an Air or Pro laptops will finally have real competition from macOS in the lower price segments. I know that I'd have a hard time going for a Windows laptop if I could get a fan-less MacBook instead. Unless, of course, I also planned to play games on the laptop. But it's not like a Windows laptop at that budget would run much some of you may be thinking that there's no way that a phone chip could power a laptop. I think there is, quite easily, in fact. The current A-series chips are crazy powerful: like 'run modern console video games on a phone' levels of we're talking about the A18 Pro specifically, then it's approximately just as powerful as the M1 chip that kickstarted the MacBook's renaissance. It even performs better than the M1 in some areas, like graphics. There is no doubt in my mind that this chip can run a MacBook, and run it Apple goes through with this plan — and it seems like it already has — then this MacBook will become the go-to laptop recommendation for a lot of people. The excellent battery life and efficiency of macOS alongside the power of an M1 chip for a much more affordable price? Yes. now, I see Apple users on online forums recommending a used M1 MacBook to people on a tight budget. This will just be that, but newer. Apple has a potential cash cow on its hands, and it needs to not fumble it.

Samsung tri-fold appears in One UI 8 code
Samsung was one of the pioneers in the foldable phone market and we've already seen teasers about its upcoming first tri-fold device. Some rumors suggest we may see the tri-fold at next week's Galaxy Unpacked event and we now have an actual look at the device thanks to the team over at Android Authority who discovered animation files hidden in the latest One UI 8 build. These show the device's design, which includes three rear panels and two inward folding hinges. The more interesting bit is that the hinges on Samsung's tri-fold feature different sizes and will reportedly fold inwards instead of the outward folding approach seen on Huawei's Mate XT. This means Samsung's device will have to be unfolded from right to left as shown in the following animation. A separate video shows a warning not to fold the right side of the device (which has the three rear cameras on its back) inward, as that may end up breaking the display. The device features a cover screen that will reside in the middle when the main folding screen is fully open. Samsung's tri-fold is referred to as Multifold 7 in the One UI 8 code, while previous rumors suggest it is called Q7M internally. While its commercial name is not finalized, previous reports point to it being called Galaxy G Fold. According to previous leaks, Samsung's first tri-fold device will feature a 9.96" folding screen and a 6.54" cover display. It is expected to weigh around 300 grams and may only launch in South Korea and China. Source

I've never been a fan of phone cases, and why would you want to cover up a phone that's undergone so much improvement? The Fold 7 makes the Fold 6 look ancient, and I want to feel that leap in design philosophy every time I pick it sure, if you're scared of dropping it, all of the cases above will at least protect the back panel. Foldable phones are expensive, so it's a good thing that Samsung is introducing a budget foldable this year as well: the Galaxy Z Flip 7 FE. If you're not a fan of Samsung's One UI or can't stand the 4,400 mAh battery, then other phone manufacturers have you covered. The Honor Magic V5 is currently the slimmest foldable in the world, has a very impressive 6,100 mAh battery, and also comes with seven years of software support. You've also got the Oppo Find N5, another powerful and slim foldable with a much bigger battery than the Fold 7 . Or, of course, you could wait to see if Apple delivers the foldable iPhone next year.
