Three held for duping college student of ₹52L in stock market scam

Hindustan Times22-05-2025
MUMBAI: Three men were arrested for allegedly defrauding a 21-year-old college student of ₹52 lakh by luring her into a fake stock market investment scheme and promising high returns.
The North Cyber Police, based in the Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), identified the accused as Mohammad Asif Mohammad Aslam Rahim, 28, Sushant Suresh Sapkat, 26, and Yusuf Mohammad Sheikh, 30. According to investigators, the trio had provided their bank account details to key cyber fraudsters who orchestrated the scam.
The accused were produced before the Borivali court and remanded to police custody. A special operation is now underway to trace and arrest other individuals involved in the racket.
The complainant, a resident of Malad and an M Com student at a reputed city college, approached the Cyber Helpline after realising she had been duped. Her father is a senior manager with a bank in Borivali.
Police said the woman, who is active on social media, was researching stock trading online in February last year when she came across a suspicious link. After clicking on it, her mobile number was added to a WhatsApp group administered by two individuals—Vinod Nair and his associate, Sushant Kumar.
She spent about a week observing the group's posts, which shared seemingly legitimate stock tips. Gaining her trust, Sushant Kumar eventually persuaded her to open an account through a trading platform linked in the group.
Without informing her family, she began investing in shares through the platform. Over time, she was added to other WhatsApp groups that reinforced the illusion of high profits. Between February 8 and March 21, 2024, she made multiple investments totalling ₹52 lakh.
Initially, the trading app showed encouraging returns. However, when she attempted to withdraw some profits, the transfer failed. Kumar instructed her to pay a 10% 'penalty fee' of ₹2.5 lakh to unlock the funds—but even after making the payment, the money remained inaccessible. When she raised concerns, Kumar stopped responding and eventually removed her from the group.
Realising she had been scammed, the student filed a complaint with the North Regional Cyber Cell.
Acting on the FIR, investigators traced the flow of money and identified the bank accounts into which the funds were deposited. On Monday, based on this evidence, police arrested Asif, Sapkat, and Sheikh from different locations across the city.
Interrogation revealed that the trio received the defrauded money in their accounts, withdrew it via ATMs, and handed it over to the masterminds behind the operation. In return, they received a commission. Police also found that the accused had provided multiple bank accounts to the fraudsters to facilitate similar scams.
'We are currently investigating how many others may have been cheated using the same modus operandi, and how many accounts were used to receive and route the illicit funds,' said a senior official from the North Cyber Police Station.

Bihar Cop Asks Man His Caste, Then Forces Him To Lick His Spit

Sheikhpura: A police official assaulted an e-rickshaw driver and made him lick his spit after asking his caste in Bihar, officials said. The incident took place on Tuesday when the driver, Praduman Kumar, dropped his passengers in the Mehus village of the Sheikhpura district. While he was at an intersection, the police official, identified as Praveen Chandra Diwakar - Mehus police station in-charge - stopped and started abusing him, the driver said. According to him, Diwakar was riding a bike and was dressed in common clothes, so he could not recognise him as a cop initially. After a brief argument, Diwakar called a police vehicle and got the driver arrested. Before taking Kumar in the police vehicle, Diwaka beat him with a 'lathi' at least 50 to 60 times on the road, leaving the driver severely injured. The cop even tried to accuse the driver of drinking alcohol. But when he did not smell anything, Diwakar slammed the driver and took him to the police station, Kumar narrated. Upon reaching the police station, Diwakar abused him and beat him even more. He then asked the driver his caste. To this, Kumar said, "Brahmin". The cop responded, "I don't even like to see people of the Brahmin caste", spat on the ground, and made the driver lick it. The driver is currently undergoing treatment at the Sheikhpura Sadar Hospital. "I work hard for my family every day. I can never forget what happened to me. I was beaten up just after asking my caste, made to lick spit. Is this humanity?" Kumar said. Kumar informed local MLA Sudarshan Kumar of the incident, who has demanded immediate cognisance and impartial investigation from the administration. Locals have also demanded that a case be registered against the police official and that action be taken. "We have suspended the police officer after the allegations were found to be true in the investigation," Superintendent of Police, Baliram Chaudhary said. Diwakar, on the other hand, has called the allegations against him "baseless". According to him, the driver was "teasing girls".

Faridabad police arrest 2 men from Delhi in Rs 93 lakh share market fraud case

The Cyber Central Police Station team in Faridabad Monday arrested two people from Delhi in connection with a share market fraud case involving Rs 93.51 lakh. The accused were produced before a court on Tuesday and sent to judicial custody. The arrested men were identified as Ankit, a resident of Gori Gama village of Vaishali district in Bihar who resides at TC Camp near Pacific Mall at Rajouri Garden in West Delhi, and Amit Kumar, a resident of Raghubeer Nagar in West Delhi. Ankit drives an e-rickshaw, while Amit works at a footwear shop. According to a police spokesperson, a resident of Ozone Park Apartment in Sector 86, Faridabad, had lodged a complaint alleging that on July 1 last year he was added to a WhatsApp group where fraudsters provided 'investment tips'. The complainant said they convinced him to open a demat account with 'DAIWA SECURITIES AI Smart Demat' for pre-market trading and investments in the US market. The person initially invested Rs 10,000 to test the account and withdrew Rs 1,000, gaining confidence in the scheme. Subsequently, he invested a total of Rs 93.51 lakh, the complaint said. However, communication with the fraudsters soon ceased, leading him to realise that he had been cheated. Acting on the complaint, the police team arrested the two men. Investigations revealed that Ankit, the account holder, provided his bank account to Amit, who further passed it on to others involved in the scam. Around Rs 8 lakh of the defrauded amount was traced to Ankit's account. In April, the Faridabad police had arrested 11 women and a man allegedly involved in a fake call centre operation that defrauded victims of at least Rs 35 lakh across multiple states by pretending to provide credit card services. The accused were caught from the call centre which had been operating from Janakpuri in West Delhi since March 2024. The case came to light following the registration of a complaint by a 29-year-old resident of Shyam Colony in Ballabhgarh near Faridabad on March 12.
