American tourist vanishes in tropical paradise after early morning walk from vacation rental
Brian Tarrence, 51, was last seen leaving his condo around 3:30 a.m. at the Paradise Inn in Grace Bay, Providenciales, Turks and Caicos, according to a missing persons flyer from the Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force.
"They seemed to be having a normal couple days, and he ended up walking out of his condo, which is in a very safe place and in the middle of Grace Bay Road," the Tarrence family's private investigator, Carl DeFazio, told Fox News Digital on Tuesday. "And we have him on camera, and he walks into town, and then he basically disappears, and we haven't heard from him since."
Tarrence, who recently moved from Monroe to Manhattan, arrived in Turks and Caicos with his wife of one year on June 22, and they planned to leave on June 29.
DeFazio said the Turks and Caicos police force is using every resource it has, including drone technology and CCTV to try and locate the 51-year-old man. He also described Grace Bay Road as a "very safe" area.
"So far, we haven't been successful in anything, but we're not giving up hope. … What I tell the family … in cases like this: Stay positive until you have a reason not to be," DeFazio, a former NYPD officer and Marine who has been a PI since the 1990s, said. "He's a smart guy. … We don't know what's in his mind or if he did this on his own or if somebody took him in."
"It's the No. 1 case right now. Everyone's looking for him."
He left his rental with his phone and wallet. He was wearing a T-shirt, shorts and sneakers, DeFazio said.
The private investigator has been working to get records of Tarrence's phone activity on the islands, but it's taking time, he said.
The day before his disappearance, he and his wife had gone on a boat trip. That evening, his wife went to bed, and when she woke up, he was gone. She hadn't noticed he left, DeFazio said.
The PI added that he is "very proud of the response from the local businesses and people on vacation" who have been offering their assistance after he posted Tarrance's missing persons flyer "everywhere in Turks and Caicos."
He added that he has no reason to suspect any kind of criminality in Tarrence's disappearance at this point, but anything is possible with so few answers six days after he vanished.
DeFazio said that in missing persons cases like this one, he typically tries to establish a behavior pattern, trying to hone in on activities the missing person likes and does not like to do. He also tries to determine how familiar the missing person is with the area he or she vanished from and what he or she frequented in that area.
Then, he canvases the area where the person disappeared and tries to track down phone and smartwatch records to track the person's last known movements.
Turks and Caicos police are asking anyone with information about Tarrence's disappearance to contact 911 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477.

In January of 1998, Amy Lynn Bradley, 23, of Virginia, confessed over the phone to her girlfriend, Mollie McClure, that she had kissed another woman while both of them had been drinking. Needing time to process the news, McClure, then 23, stopped taking Bradley's calls. Determined to reach McClure, Bradley sent her a 'message in a bottle,' expressing her remorse in a handwritten letter — one that took on new meaning after Bradley vanished in March of 1998 during a Caribbean cruise with her family. "Mollie, I hurt you deeper than you can ever forget,' Bradley wrote in a letter McClure shares in episode three of Netflix's true-crime series Amy Bradley Is Missing, which premiered on July 16. 'I'm not asking you to forget, because that'll never happen," Bradley wrote. "I just wanted to ask you if you could find it in your heart to forgive me." Then, in an eerie foreshadowing of what may have befallen Bradley a month later, she wrote, "I feel like there is an ocean between us, like I'm on a desert island waiting for you to rescue me. A message in a bottle, my only hope. I miss you, Mollie.' Bradley ended the missive writing, 'Save me, please. Stranded, Amy." On March 24, 1998, exactly one month after Bradley wrote the message in a bottle, she disappeared from a Royal Caribbean ship in Curaçao. She has been missing ever since. Some believe that Bradley fell overboard or died by suicide. Others wonder if she had been kidnapped, trafficked and forced into a life of prostitution. In the series, McClure says she has no idea what happened to the woman she loved, who vanished while traveling with her parents and brother. Her father last saw her sleeping on the balcony of their cabin between 5:15 a.m. and 5:30 a.m. on the morning of March 24, 1998. But by 6 a.m., she was gone, and had only taken her lighter and cigarettes with her, leaving even her shoes behind. "Some viewers have fixated on Bradley's letter and phrases that now seem haunting in retrospect — like "an ocean between us" and "stranded." But McClure says in the series that "the convenience of the metaphor is ripe for misunderstanding." 'It could suggest suicide,' McClure says. 'But I don't connect with it in that way.' She notes that 'it is a love letter.' During a nearly 30-year-search for Bradley, her family has received tips that have seemed promising. The officer didn't take action, her father, Ron Bradley, told NBC News — in in part because the officer wasn't allowed to be in the brothel and because he didn't know anyone by that name was missing until he saw a magazine cover with Amy's face and name on it. 'Amy Bradley is Missing' is one of the most-watched documentaries on Netflix right now. But the case is not new to true crime fans. In the opening scene of the Netflix documentary, Amy Bradley is Missing, several interviewees share their suspicions about what happened to the 23-year-old woman who went missing while traveling with her family on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship in 1998. 'Somebody killed her,' one person suggests. Another says, 'I think she jumped or fell off,' while a third posits, 'I think she got taken as a sex slave. But I don't know that.' Bradley's unsolved disappearance has long been the subject of such theories. At around 3:40 a.m. on March 24, 1998, Bradley returned to her family's cruise cabin after dancing in the ship's club space. Her dad, Ron, said he woke up briefly around 5:30 a.m. and saw her out on the deck, but when he woke up again at 6 a.m., she was gone. A four-day search of the ship and the surrounding waters turned up no trace of Bradley. The three-part Netflix series, which came out on July 16, doesn't have concrete answers, but it does explore several theories that police pursued as well as others that true crime fans and internet sleuths have clung to about what happened that morning. Theories presented in the docuseries One of the first theories police investigated was that Bradley had either fallen overboard or taken her own life by jumping off the deck. But Bradley's family has never supported either theory, maintaining instead that they believe she is still alive. But Victor McCollum, an FBI agent who was on the case, says in the documentary that right after Bradley went missing, there was 'no direct evidence she jumped.' Other authorities who were interviewed added that, because of the ship's location and other conditions in the water surrounding it in the early morning hours of March 24, if Bradley had jumped, they would've found something. 'Because of the position of the boat, wind force, sea current, the wave height — the body would have washed up,' Henry Vrutaal, a Curaçao coast guard officer, says in the documentary. 'But she was nowhere to be found. Not even a piece of clothing, nothing.' Another theory emerged when Chris Fenwick, a video editor who was on the ship, found the last known footage of Bradley, which shows her dancing with one of the cruise ship's band members, Alister Douglas, commonly referred to by his nickname 'Yellow.' Another passenger, Lori Thompson, said she and a friend were sitting on the deck 'sometime between 5 a.m. and 6 a.m.' on March 24 when they saw Bradley and Douglas in a glass elevator together. Thompson said that about 15 minutes later, the friends saw Douglas walk across the deck alone. 'I kinda got a bad vibe,' Thompson says in the series. 'Immediately, I thought, 'Where's Amy?'' FBI agents say that Douglas was interviewed, and he had 'vehemently denied' walking around with Bradley in the early morning hours on the ship. He passed a polygraph test, and no charges were ever filed against him. Douglas, who was not interviewed for the Netflix series, spoke about the case in an interview with the 'True Crime This Week' podcast in October 2024. 'About five minutes to 1 a.m., I said [to Bradley], 'Look, I have to go, I've got to get out of [the] passenger area.' And I left,' Douglas said on the podcast. 'That was my last conversation, last time I saw her.' In the aftermath of her disappearance, some people have claimed that they've seen Bradley in Curaçao, a Dutch Caribbean island where the cruise ship was about to dock when she went missing, fueling theories that she was kidnapped or sold into sex trafficking. At the end of the first episode, David Carmichael, a Canadian scuba diver, says that he saw Bradley with two men on Curaçao in August 1998, but he did not know she was a missing person at the time. However, authorities have not confirmed any reported Bradley sightings since her disappearance. The FBI has also stated that there is no evidence that Bradley was kidnapped by someone who was on board the cruise ship, and they have not arrested or detained any of the passengers in relation to her case. Internet sleuths have been trying to solve this case for years The Netflix documentary may be bringing Bradley's case to a new audience, but internet sleuths, who are people who use online resources to investigate mysteries and crimes, have been digging into her disappearance for years. These amateur investigators tend to meet in designated Reddit threads, Facebook groups and other online forums. While internet sleuths have had some success (online sleuths were credited with helping identify people who were involved in the U.S. Capitol riot on Jan. 6, 2021), there are many cases where they made inaccurate and potentially harmful accusations. The most popular theories within these communities align with what is discussed in the Netflix series: that Bradley either fell overboard or was kidnapped and could still be alive.
