The resurrection of Lorde - fans say 'queen of pop is back' as single What Was That drops

Daily Mirror25-04-2025
Move over Brat summer, the queen is back. In an intimate open-air Washington Square Park gig, New Zealand pop star Lorde dropped her first new single since 2021 and now fans are going wild
You've heard of Brat Summer, now it's time for Lorde summer. After an agonising four-year wait, the two-time GRAMMY winner has just dropped her new single What Was That – and fans are going crazy.
Lorde's fanbase have buzzing with anticipation ever since she teased the drop her new single What Was That on TikTok last month. Now, the excitement has been ramped up after a clip of Lorde performing at Washington Square Park on April 23 went viral on Tiktok. Standing on a small wooden stage, she sang her new hit to a small crowd of screaming fans. One video caption read: 'We're still in disbelief.'

Best known for her breakthrough hit 'Royals', released in 2013, Lorde has cemented her position as music royalty. The New Zealander topped charts worldwide, before being awarded Song of the Year and Best Pop Solo Performance at the 2014 GRAMMYs. She has since become known for her distinctive layered sound and the catchy melancholia of her lyrics, observed in subsequent top hits like 2017's Green Light.
And, according to TikTok, her latest drop doesn't disappoint. Beginning with a grey street surrounded by brick houses, Lorde can be seen strutting down the road in a white shirt and jeans as the song's bass slowly picks up. 'You already know she's the queen of build ups,' one fan said in a TikTok video, before jumping up and down at the chorus drop.
'THE QUEEN OF POP IS BACK,' another ecstatic TikTok fan declared, also dancing around their room. Another wrote: 'LORDE SUMMERRR IS HERE.'

'The way its already a hit… oh my god,' one user said. 'A minute and a half off the next album and I already have goose-bumps. This my summer,' another wrote.
Former X-Factor stars Jedward even chimed in with their reaction: 'the Lorde has risen to save us'. Another comment took the religious metaphor a little further: 'the pope died so the Lorde has risen'.

TikTokkers have also speculated that 'queen of Brat' Charli XCX was teasing a 'Lorde summer' at this year's Coachella. Videos of the crowd going crazy spread like wildfire after the singer brought Lorde out during her performance of Girl, so confusing – a song written about the pair's fraught friendship.
'I'm so happy we're getting Lorde back this year, dream come true,' one commenter wrote. 'Charli brought her out of hibernation,' another joked.
The star has been lauded for her talents by other influential figures in the music industry. Notably, the late David Bowie was quoted as believing the singer to be the "future of music".
His long time pianist Mike Garson told fans during a Periscope Q&A: "David really liked Lorde, and he felt like she was the future of music, and they had a few wonderful moments together." This came after Lorde was chosen to perform a Bowie tribute at the 2016 BRIT awards.
It's not confirmed when exactly Lorde's new album will be released. However, the hype around 'Lorde Summer' has left fans hoping that it will be out in time for the sunny season.

Breathe easy, cinephiles: The AMC Lincoln Square is back open after that brutal flooding

Moviegoing is back! Or at least AMC's Lincoln Square cinema is, having quickly bounced back from a brief shutdown due to Monday night's downpour, which caused a roof pipe to burst, flooding the lower levels of the multi-story building. The Upper West Side movie theater reopened in time for screenings Tuesday evening and will continue operations as scheduled, with only some auditoriums and areas on the bottom floor closed for cleanup. Cinephiles can return to debating the latest summer blockbuster over M3GAN and Jaws themed popcorn buckets without further concern. New York City experienced the second-wettest hour of its recorded history (after Hurricane Ida in 2021), with 2.07 inches of rain falling between 7 and 8 p.m. As photos and videos of the storm poured into everyone's social media feeds, a widely shared video on TikTok showed a concessions counter at the Manhattan multiplex being badly beaten with water. Audiences had to be evacuated from the theater Monday night, though no one was injured. Located steps away from Lincoln Center, AMC's Lincoln Square theater houses one of the largest IMAX screens in the world—currently treating audiences to around 75 feet worth of David Corenswet in the latest Superman —as well as a Dolby Cinema auditorium. Both the IMAX and Dolby halls were undamaged, but a few of the other screens and areas in the lower levels of the cinema remain shut. Refunds were automatically issued by AMC to ticket-buyers affected by Monday and Tuesday's closure. A message which read, 'We apologize for the inconvenience, but this theatre is temporarily closed for unforeseen maintenance,'was briefly on the cinema's website.

Woman kicked out of Hilton hotel breakfast for 'inappropriate' outfit choice

A woman claimed that she was told she couldn't eat breakfast at her hotel's buffet because her outfit was 'inappropriate,' but she said she thought it was fine. A woman has claimed she was chucked out of a Hilton hotel breakfast buffet for wearing an "inappropriate" outfit. ‌ Saffron, who shares videos on TikTok under @saffronmariexx, had popped downstairs around 7.30am wearing what she described as a matching satin-look pyjama set and flip-flops. ‌ In another video, she explained that she was staying in the hotel for some "self-care," but she was stunned when she was turned away from the breakfast buffet due to dressing "inappropriately", reports the Mirror. ‌ She said: "When I got there, I was told I was dressed inappropriately." She slammed the decision as "absolutely ridiculous" and insisted she looked "cuter than everyone there". Determined to get her breakfast, the influencer "quickly got changed". But admitted her shorts were shorter in the second outfit she wore. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! In a video explaining the situation, she laughed: "The second outfit was actually worse than the first one." In the comments, people were left asking: "Why would you wear pyjamas to breakfast?" Someone wrote: "Nowhere allows it due to upholding a certain look. Some places even turn you away for wearing sliders." ‌ Another wasn't impressed by Saffron's behaviour, writing: "You get dressed to go to a restaurant." A fourth argued: "It's a luxury hotel, so they have high standards, and wearing PJS is a no-no." Some even accused Saffron of being "lazy and entitled" and told her to "have some dignity" rather than going out in the clothes she'd slept in all night. ‌ Other people defended Saffron, though. One said: "I don't get why people are saying 'why would you wear pajamas' it's legit a breakfast in a hotel". Another agreed: "It makes no sense that hotels frown upon it, you're still dressed." ‌ While it's unclear which Hilton branch Saffron was staying at, dress codes vary across locations, though most follow a smart-casual vibe. That usually means polished but relaxed looks. For women, a simple dress or blouse with trousers will do. For men, it's chinos and a shirt, blazers optional, ties not required. Based on this, it would be safe to assume that breakfast had a more 'casual' vibe as Saffron was allowed to wear shorts, but pyjamas are frowned upon.
