Senators seek arms licences
The meeting of the Senate Standing Committee on Interior, chaired by Senator Faisal Saleem, began with prayers for the victims of the Swat tragedy.
Lawmakers raised multiple issues, including arms licenses, illegal housing societies in Islamabad, water shortages and security arrangements for Muharram.
Senator Palwasha Khan raised the issue of halted arms license issuance to parliamentarians.
In response, Naqvi announced that each member of parliament will be issued one license, adding that quota allocations would be increased for areas facing deteriorating law and order situations.
He also ordered refunds for individuals who paid fees for licenses during the previous tenure but never received them.
During the session, Director General (DG) of Immigration and Passports Mustafa Jamal Qazi came under heavy criticism from committee members.
Senator Haji Hidayatullah protested against the DG's alleged unprofessional behaviour, claiming that Qazi ignores his calls and refuses to act on them, while accommodating others for the same requests.
"He even said about my leader Aimal Wali Khan, 'Is he greater than the state?', which is an unacceptable insult," Hidayatullah said.
Interior Minister Naqvi instructed the Interior Secretary to look into the matter.
The committee was also briefed on proposed amendments to the Pakistan Citizenship Bill 2025.
DG Qazi explained that overseas Pakistanis who previously had to renounce Pakistani citizenship to acquire foreign nationality would now be eligible to reclaim it, especially those from countries with which Pakistan has bilateral agreements.
He argued that this move would help attract investment, philanthropy, and expertise back to Pakistan.
However, Senator Palwasha questioned the practical benefits, prompting Qazi to respond: "These individuals are assets. They earn abroad, invest here, and contribute to development and charity in Pakistan."

The strikes killed multiple Pakistani civilians and injure many more. The Pakistan Air Force (PAF), scrambled to counter the Indian aerial threat, shot down six IAF fighter aircraft including three French-made Rafales. The strikes sett off an exchange of attacks between the two countries by fighter jets, missiles, drones and artillery that killed dozens until a ceasefire on May 10. The ceasefire was first announced by US President Donald Trump on social media after Washington held talks with both sides, but India has differed with Trump's claims that it resulted from his intervention and threats to sever trade talks. India's position has been that New Delhi and Islamabad must resolve their problems directly and with no outside involvement. On Monday, India's foreign minister, Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, restated its position that trade was not a factor in the ceasefire. "Relationships will never be free of issues," he said, referring to the United States, adding, "What matters is the ability to deal with it and to keep that trend going in the positive direction."

DC urges Muharram procession organisers to promote peace
LAHORE: Deputy Commissioner Syed Musa Raza has appealed to the organisers and custodians of Muharram processions to act as 'ambassadors of peace' for the district administration, urging them to promote harmony, tolerance, and unity while upholding the sanctity of Muharram-ul-Haram. He expressed these views during his visits to various Ashura procession routes, said Deputy Commissioner spokesperson on Tuesday. The administration is finalising all arrangements for the upcoming Muharram and Ashura period, aiming to ensure peaceful observances and exemplary services for the citizens. The DC conducted detailed inspections of Ashura procession routes, including Syed Mehdi Hussain Imam Bargah and Gawal Mandi Railway Road, to personally oversee the preparations. He was accompanied by the Chief Officer Metropolitan Corporation Lahore, the Assistant Commissioner Shalimar, and other relevant officials. During the visit, Assistant Commissioner Shalimar Muhammad Saqib Trazi provided a comprehensive briefing on the arrangements, confirming that Rescue 1122 teams and Clinic on Wheels services will be deployed along all Muharram and Ashura procession routes. Furthermore, medical aid camps and water stalls will be set up to cater to the needs of the participants. The DC reiterated that the administration will maintain continuous monitoring of all religious gatherings and processions throughout Muharram-ul-Haram, stressing that no negligence in arrangements will be tolerated. 'Directives have been issued for the completion of all construction work along procession routes before the eve of Ashura. Additionally, WASA officials have been instructed to make special arrangements given the monsoon season, ensuring efficient drainage. Unnecessary obstructions and encroachments along routes are to be removed immediately,' he said, warning that strict action will be taken against violators of the Loudspeaker Act, and urged citizens to contact the District Administration Control Room at 03070002345 in case of any emergency. Law & order during Muharram: CM directs action against dissemination of fake news
LAHORE: On the direction of Chief Minister Punjab Maryam Nawaz Sharif, special measures have been taken for the first time to monitor and prevent fake news for establishing law and order during Muharram-ul-Haram. A new system has been implemented and a special Control Room has been established in this regard. The CM directed to launch strict legal action against the dissemination of fake news on the social media during Muharram-ul-Haram. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, tracing of people who are involved in disseminating controversial contents on the social media accounts has been launched and a strict legal action is being taken. Dozens of controversial social media accounts have been blocked across Punjab on the report of the Special Branch. On the direction of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, a Cyber Patrol Unit will perform its duties for the first time in the province during Ashura. A special portal of PITB has also been activated for monitoring and reporting objectionable social media contents. The special cell will monitor 24/7 social media contents pertaining to religious hatred and sectarianism. After reporting controversial content on the portal, the account is blocked and the whereabouts of the account holder is traced. The Chief Minister directed to initiate special measures to ensure a complete ban on the promotion and publication of contents based on religious hatred and speeches. She also directed to ensure a complete ban on the usage of drone cameras under any circumstance. She directed to carry out the deployment of a Quick Response Force to ensure complete security of Muharram processions and gatherings. Iron pipes will be installed on all sides for security purposes during the Muharram processions. Special cameras will be installed at the entrance gate of every procession during the Ashura so that the visitors can be identified by their faces. The CM directed to deploy female police officers and personnel for the security of female mourners in the gatherings and processions. She highlighted, 'The Karbala incident imparts us a lesson to adopt peace and tolerance. All possible steps will be taken to ensure peace and order during the Ashura.' She asserted, 'In the context of the current global situation, the holy month of Muharram is extremely sensitive and there is absolutely no room for committing negligence by the relevant stakeholders in the performance of their duties.'
