IPL On Collision Course With Pakistan Super League In 2026: Details Inside

NDTV11-06-2025
The Pakistan Super League (PSL) next year is set to clash with the high-profile Indian Premier League as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is mulling to hold the event in the same window as the IPL. The reason being given is that with the ICC World T20 Cup scheduled in February-March next year and some FTP (Future Tours Programme) commitments, it might not be possible again to hold the PSL in its normal window of February-March. "There is a window available to the Pakistan board in December and first half of January but it has already given NOCs to Pakistani players to play in the Big Bash in Australia in this period and has also planned some domestic activities.
"So the discussion now with the franchise owners is to prepare for the PSL to be held in April-May just like this year," a source said.
An official in the PSL secretariat said that when the PSL was held this year and overlapped with the IPL due to the Champions Trophy in Pakistan in February-March, there was no effect on the viewership or interest which the PSL normally gets every year.
"Initially there was some concern that having the PSL in the same window as the IPL might hit our league but surprisingly viewership figures on TV and other media improved and the franchise owners got a chance to sign on some notable overseas players who were not picked in the IPL auction," he added.
With 10 editions now completed, the valuation of the existing six franchise teams will also be carried out before the next PSL and the PCB is thinking about a 25 per cent increase in franchise fees.
All the franchise owners except Multan Sultans' owner Ali Tareen, teams have confirmed in writing their intent to retain ownership for the next 10-years but Tareen who pays the highest franchise fee wants a review of all franchise fees as he has concerns over financial losses.
The next edition of the event is also significant since the PSL secretariat is also set to invite bids for two more new teams, the work for which has already started.
Apparently the PCB also wants that the 10-year title sponsorship agreement also needs to be reviewed and renewed and a new deal for live streaming will also be required.
Currently, PCB earns about 900 million rupees annually from the title sponsorship. Last year, live streaming rights for Pakistan were sold for approximately 1.8 billion. Local broadcast rights generated around 6.3 billion, while international rights brought in USD 4.6 million. Ground rights were sold for around PKR 2 billion for two years.
For TV production, PCB signed a two-year deal worth USD 2.25 million annually. Tenders will be issued for all these agreements, followed by lengthy processes.

Trump strikes trade deal with Indonesia, imposes 19% tariff on goods

US President Donald Trump announced on Tuesday a new trade deal with Indonesia that includes a 19 per cent tariff on all Indonesian goods entering the United States, while offering US exports full access to the Indonesian market, free of tariffs and other deal, finalised just ahead of an August 1 tariff hike deadline, is part of Trump's broader push to reshape US trade relationships and reduce the nation's sizeable trade Indonesia is not among the top 15 US trading partners, bilateral trade totaled nearly USD 40 billion in 2024 and has been steadily growing. Under the terms of the new deal, Indonesia has committed to purchasing USD 15 billion in US energy, USD 4.5 billion in American agricultural products, and 50 Boeing jets, many of them long-haul 777s. Trump touted the deal as a major win for US farmers, ranchers, and exporters, claiming it would provide "complete and total access" to Indonesia's 280 million-strong consumer market- a market that had previously been limited by high trade barriers. The average applied tariff rate in Indonesia, while officially listed at 37.1 per cent, was effectively around 5.7 per cent in 2024, according to World Trade Organization a Truth Social post Tuesday, Trump described the Indonesia agreement as a 'landmark Deal': Thank you to the People of Indonesia for your friendship and commitment to balancing our Trade Deficit. We will keep DELIVERING for the American People, and the People of Indonesia!'Outside the Oval Office, Trump emphasised the imbalance the new deal aims to correct: 'They are going to pay 19 per cent and we are going to pay nothing we will have full access into Indonesia, and we have a couple of those deals that are going to be announced.'Indonesia had previously faced the threat of a 32 per cent blanket tariff set to take effect August 1, part of a broader tariff ultimatum Trump issued in letters to over two dozen countries this month, including Japan, Canada, Brazil, and India. The letters threatened new tariffs ranging from 20 per cent to 50 per cent unless agreements were reached to reduce trade imbalances.- EndsTune InMust Watch

AIFF keen on 10-year approval to run ISL, undecided on relegation

The ISL, which began with eight teams in 2014, was accorded the top league status in 2019 when a roadmap was agreed by all stakeholders Panaji: The All India Football Federation (AIFF) wants to continue with the Indian Super League (ISL) as the country's top-tier league for the next 10 years but has called for discussions on 'matters of promotion and relegation.' The ISL began as an eight-team, two-month, IPL-style tournament in 2014, but was accorded the top league status in 2019 when a roadmap was agreed by all stakeholders. According to the roadmap, promotion was started from the 2022-23 season with the I-League winners -- Punjab FC first and Mohammedan Sporting Club later – qualifying on sporting merit. The organisers have not implemented relegation. In its official proposal to the marketing partners, AIFF has told FSDL, a joint venture between Reliance and Star which runs the top league, they are ready to issue a '10-year sanction to run ISL with a clear calendar window' and provide 'full commercial freedom' to run the league. 'Matter of promotions and relegations from ISL may be discussed, the principles and impact on AFC Roadmap for Indian football may be considered,' states the proposal titled 'Indian Football Landscape', AIFF Vision for the ISL 2026-2035. TOI has a copy of the proposal which also allows the ISL champions to take the top spot in Asian competitions, while the second spot will be reserved for the I-League winners, a change from the existing system that allows the Super Cup champions to represent the country in continental competitions. For the new Master Rights Agreement (MRA) – where AIFF retains all non-ISL rights including national team competitions -- the federation wants the marketing partners or league owners to make an annual solidarity payments to AIFF game development fund of Rs. 50 crore or 10% of the total league revenue in 2026, whichever is higher, with 5% annual increment. According to minutes of the MRA task force meeting, AIFF wants a 'reliable source of revenue to ensure the effective development of youth and grassroots football, as well as the smooth organisation of competitions across the country.' The proposal has not found favour with the marketing partners, who have suggested formation of a new holding company with clubs (60%), FSDL (26%) and AIFF (14%) as the shareholders. 'In the current system, stakeholders lose approximately Rs 500 crore annually and it makes no sense to continue losing big money,' a source who has been tracking the developments told TOI. 'Business as usual will not be sustainable for anyone. It will only put higher demands on sponsors and there won't be return on investment.' Despite the logjam, AIFF remains confident that it can find a solution to the impasse at a time when the country's top-tier league has been kept on hold due to uncertainty over the 15-year MRA which ends on Dec 8. 'The AIFF cannot act right now because the Supreme Court made an observation (on April 26) that the renewal of the Master Rights Agreement should not be done until its order. We are now waiting the SC order, so that the path becomes clear,' said a senior official. AIFF officials said they have been in touch with their marketing partners since Sept 19 last year, when the then secretary general P Anilkumar first sought a meeting with FSDL. In another letter dated Nov 21, the secretary said 'AIFF would like to engage in a constructive dialogue to explore possibilities for extending or renewing the partnership under mutually beneficial terms and help foster a new era of football development, marketing and popularity of the game in India. ' Since then, three meetings have been held this year between high-ranking AIFF and FSDL officials in Delhi and Mumbai.
