McNeil's 2-run homer in 7th off Weaver lifts Mets over Yankees 6-5 in Subway Series opener
Associated Press NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Luke Weaver in the seventh inning, leading the New York Mets over the Yankees 6-5 on Friday in a Subway Series opener between teams that faded badly after strong starts. Juan Soto hit a two-run homer among three hits against his former team and Brett Baty connected for a solo shot in the sixth off Ian Hamilton that cut the Yankees' lead to 5-4. Weaver (1-3) relieved with two outs in the seventh and walked Pete Alonso. McNeil drove a changeup into the right-field upper deck at Citi Field, sending the Yankees to their fifth straight loss during a slide that dropped them from the AL East lead. Jasson Dominguez ended a 32-game homerless streak, hitting a pair of opposite-field homers and driving in three runs. Domínguez and Judge hit back-to-back homers starting the game, Judge's 32nd this year, and Cody Bellinger also went deep for the Yankees. Huascar Brazoban (4-2) pitched a hitless seventh and Reed Garrett got six outs for his third save, helped by an outstanding defensive play from McNeil at second base in the ninth. The Mets were a big league-best 45-24 on June 12 and the Yankees 42-25 but the Mets are 6-14 since and the Yankees 6-15. With 13 Mets pitchers on the injured list, 28-year-old right-hander Justin Hagenman made his first major league start and allowed four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings. Yankees starter Marcus Stroman gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings against his former team. Soto hit his 21st home run this season in the first after Domínguez misplayed Brandon Nimmo's leadoff double. Key moment McNeil's homer came on the fourth of six changeups Weaver threw him. Key stat Weaver has allowed homers in three straight appearances. After compiling a 1.05 ERA in his first 24 games, he has a 13.50 ERA in seven outings since returning from a strained left hamstring. Up next Yankees LHP Carlos Rodon (9-5, 2.95 ERA) and Mets RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 6.00) are scheduled to start Saturday. ___ AP MLB: recommended

Angels Expected To Trade Multiple Pieces, Including $7.8 Million Star
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. The Los Angeles Angels are in a tough spot this year. They're on the verge of contending, but it doesn't seem like they're a true World Series threat. At this point, they're either going to need to get aggressive toward buying and contending or aggressive toward selling and rebuilding. It's much more likely they sell rather than buy at the trade deadline this season. There are a few players who make sense as trade chips in Los Angeles. The Athletic's Jim Bowden recently revealed that he expects the Angels will cut ties with outfielder Taylor Ward at the trade deadline this season. ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 3: Taylor Ward #3 of the Los Angeles Angels runs out an RBI triple against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning at Truist Park on July 3, 2025 in Atlanta,... ATLANTA, GEORGIA - JULY 3: Taylor Ward #3 of the Los Angeles Angels runs out an RBI triple against the Atlanta Braves in the sixth inning at Truist Park on July 3, 2025 in Atlanta, Georgia. More"The Angels insist they're buyers, but come the deadline, I expect them to not make the same mistakes they've made in the past as they should be sellers; if not, a buyer-to-buyer trade involving Ward would still make sense," Bowden wrote. "Ward, 31, is hitting .217 with a .292 on-base percentage but has mashed 20 homers and driven in 57 runs. He is under team control through 2026. A trade to the Royals would make a lot of sense." Ward was a suitable trade chip to use last season, but the Angels didn't deal him away. Now he's putting together another excellent campaign, and the slugger makes sense as a trade chip once again. Bowden suggests the Kansas City Royals could be a fit. The Royals could use some pop in the outfield, and Ward would be one of the better under-the-radar options on the market this season. The San Diego Padres have a gaping hole in left field to fill. Ward could be the top option to bring to town if they want a chance to steal the National League West from the Los Angeles Dodgers. The Cincinnati Reds desperately need a right-handed hitting outfielder. Ward would fill that role in a big way, but he might be playing too well to be a platoon bat. Still, the Reds are a team to watch. More MLB: Cardinals Predicted To Cut Ties With $81 Million Star In Huge Trade

Guardians Shockingly Expected To Use Gold Glove Star As Trade Chip
Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. Newsweek AI is in beta. Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Recently, the Athletic's Jim Bowden put together a poll of MLB executives in order to get a better look at what to expect at the trade deadline this season. There were a few interesting names included as potential trade pieces this season. Potentially the most shocking piece of this poll was the fact that multiple MLB executives mentioned Cleveland Guardians outfielder Steven Kwan as a potential trade chip this season. ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 04: José Ramírez #11 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrates a two-run home run with Steven Kwan #38 against the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth inning at Angel Stadium of Anaheim... ANAHEIM, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 04: José Ramírez #11 of the Cleveland Guardians celebrates a two-run home run with Steven Kwan #38 against the Los Angeles Angels in the fifth inning at Angel Stadium of Anaheim on April 04, 2025 in Anaheim, California. More"This shocked me, but multiple teams mentioned Kwan, who has won three consecutive Gold Glove awards and is having another nice season. Kwan is slashing .296/.359/.418 (118 OPS+) with six home runs, 18 doubles and 11 stolen bases in 12 attempts," Bowden wrote. "Kwan, 27, is under team control through 2027 and is arbitration-eligible going forward. Perhaps the Guardians would consider dealing him for a more impactful power bat." Kwan is a very interesting trade chip because he's a name that's rarely, if ever, been mentioned as a tradable piece up until this point. The 27-year-old is a tremendous defender while also being one of the more reliable contact hitters in baseball. Despite being a contact-first hitter, he still manages to post OPS+ numbers higher than 100 on a regular basis. With Kwan's team control going through the 2027 season, it would be very shocking to see the Guardians trade him right now. Cleveland is still a winning ball club despite struggling a bit more than expected this season. One middle-of-the-road season shouldn't force the team to cut ties with one of its best players.
