NEW YORK (AP) — Jeff McNeil hit a go-ahead, two-run homer off Luke Weaver in the seventh inning, leading the New York Mets over the Yankees 6-5 on Friday in a Subway Series opener between teams that faded badly after strong starts.
Juan Soto hit a two-run homer among three hits against his former team and Brett Baty connected for a solo shot in the sixth off Ian Hamilton that cut the Yankees' lead to 5-4.
Weaver (1-3) relieved with two outs in the seventh and walked Pete Alonso. McNeil drove a changeup into the right-field upper deck at Citi Field, sending the Yankees to their fifth straight loss during a slide that dropped them from the AL East lead.
Jasson Dominguez ended a 32-game homerless streak, hitting a pair of opposite-field homers and driving in three runs. Domínguez and Judge hit back-to-back homers starting the game, Judge's 32nd this year, and Cody Bellinger also went deep for the Yankees.
Huascar Brazoban (4-2) pitched a hitless seventh and Reed Garrett got six outs for his third save, helped by an outstanding defensive play from McNeil at second base in the ninth.
The Mets were a big league-best 45-24 on June 12 and the Yankees 42-25 but the Mets are 6-14 since and the Yankees 6-15.
With 13 Mets pitchers on the injured list, 28-year-old right-hander Justin Hagenman made his first major league start and allowed four runs and five hits in 4 1/3 innings.
Yankees starter Marcus Stroman gave up three runs and seven hits in five innings against his former team.
Soto hit his 21st home run this season in the first after Domínguez misplayed Brandon Nimmo's leadoff double. Key moment
McNeil's homer came on the fourth of six changeups Weaver threw him. Key stat
Weaver has allowed homers in three straight appearances. After compiling a 1.05 ERA in his first 24 games, he has a 13.50 ERA in seven outings since returning from a strained left hamstring. Up next
Yankees LHP Carlos Rodon (9-5, 2.95 ERA) and Mets RHP Frankie Montas (0-1, 6.00) are scheduled to start Saturday.

Cronenworth's walk-off single in the 10th lifts the Padres to a 3-2 win over the Rangers

Associated Press SAN DIEGO (AP) — Jake Cronenworth singled to right field with the bases loaded and two outs in the 10th inning to give the San Diego Padres a 3-2 win over the Texas Rangers on Friday. Cronenworth's single off Robert Garcia (1-4) brought in automatic runner Jackson Merrill. Cronenworth raised his right index finger as he rounded first base and was mobbed by teammates near second after his fifth career walk-off hit. Manny Machado was intentionally walked to open the inning and Luis Arraez struck out. Gavin Sheets singled to center to load the bases. Xander Bogaerts injured himself swinging at the first pitch of his at-bat, was checked by an athletic trainer and left the game. Bryce Johnson replaced him and struck out. The Rangers went to extra innings for the sixth time in nine games, losing four of them. Machado had two hits to reach 1,997 in his career, including a 440-foot solo home run to straightaway center field in the fourth to pull the Padres to 2-1. Machado, elected the National League's starting third baseman for the All-Star Game, has 356 career homers. The Rangers jumped on Randy Vasquez with two outs in the third. Josh Smith walked and Corey Seager singled, with both scoring when Marcus Semien doubled to right-center over Fernando Tatis Jr.'s outstretched glove. After Machado's homer pulled the Padres within one, they tied it in the sixth, getting just one run despite loading the bases with one out. Tatis opened with a triple that ticked off the glove of right fielder Adolis Garcia. Machado's one-out walk chased starter Kumar Rocker, and Arraez greeted Hoby Milner with an RBI single. Sheets singled to load the bases before Milner struck out Bogaerts and Cronenworth. Adrian Morejon (5-3) got the win. Key moment Cronenworth's single ended it after 3 hours, 8 minutes. Key stat Machado can become the 12th player to reach 350 homers and 2,000 hits at age 32 or younger. Up next Rangers RHP Jack Leiter (4-5, 4.29 ERA) is scheduled to start Saturday night against Padres RHP Stephen Kolek (3—3, 3.73). ___ AP MLB: recommended

Mets, Yankees delivered New York a fitting early fireworks show on Fourth of July

The Citi Field crowd was large and loud. The weather was the precise perfect we missed all spring. And the holiday matchup in Queens turned out to be a home run — technically, seven of them. Even with the Yankees and Mets generally at their worst and unhealthiest in recent weeks — and let's hope it doesn't get much worse or any unhealthier than this — the show must go on. And what a Subway Series show these two struggling/ailing teams put on while simultaneously putting their various, increasing troubles aside. This was an American holiday done right, from first-inning fireworks featuring three home runs, including one each by superstars Aaron Judge and Juan Soto, to Jeff McNeil's game-winning home run and finally McNeil's show-stopper of a play in the ninth to help save a memorable 6-5 win for this seriously depleted Mets team.
