Over 200 ‘illegal immigrants from Bangladesh' airlifted from Vadodara on special IAF flight; will be handed over to BSF: Officials

Over two months after the Gujarat Police began an exercise to identify Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally in India, more than 200 alleged illegal immigrants were airlifted on a special Indian Air Force (IAF) flight from Vadodara, under heavy security deployment, on Thursday. Officials of the Gujarat Police confirmed that the deportation was carried out as per the protocol, as part of which the detainees were handed over to the Border Security Force (BSF) in the states sharing a border with Bangladesh, from where they would be 'sent back' following due process. Senior official of the Gujarat Police told The Indian Express that the IAF's Airbus a321 aircraft was deployed to airlift the confirmed Bangladeshi nationals as well as several undocumented suspects to 'drop them off' in the border states of the North-East from where the Border Security Force (BSF) would process their deportation to their home country through the land border. The Bangladeshi nationals were brought to the Vadodara Airforce base under heavy security deployment of the Gujarat ATS and made to board the special plane. The senior officer, speaking on conditions of anonymity said, 'Since their confinement by the Gujarat Police at the makeshift holding centres in the state, the process of deportation had been underway. Deportation is carried out by the BSF. Therefore, the Gujarat Police coordinated with the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Offices) and made arrangements to have them reach the Air Force base as per the instructions of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which has issued the directions to undertake the deportations of those found living in India in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attacks of April…' The officer said, 'The illegal immigrants will be dropped off in the border states close to Bangladesh from where they will be made to cross over and return by the BSF.' Officials said that these border states include some in the North East, besides West Bengal.

Former IAF sergeant arrested in 100cr multi-state investment fraud case

Lucknow: The Economic Offences Wing (EOW) on Friday apprehended a former Indian Air Force sergeant from Faizabad Road in Lucknow for allegedly running a fake online investment scheme that duped thousands of investors. The accused — Anil Kumar Tiwari alias 'Doctor' — was on the run for over a decade. Tiwari, son of a retired govt scientist, had taken a VRS from IAF after 17 years in 2009 and became a key operative of M/s Uni Pay to You Marketing Pvt Ltd, an online investment company that originated in Bengaluru, Karnataka. The company set up regional branches in multiple places, including Unnao in Uttar Pradesh. Through aggressive marketing and promises of doubling investments within 10 months and offering unusually high interest rates on fixed deposits, the company lured lakhs of rupees from unsuspecting investors, many of whom were farmers, homemakers and small business owners. Tiwari, leveraging his credibility as an ex-serviceman, was instrumental in building trust among potential investors. His background — as the son of a respected scientist and a former IAF sergeant — added legitimacy to the fraudulent operations. Officials say Tiwari operated as a recruiter, trainer and field-level handler for the firm's north India operations. The company shut down its operations abruptly without returning the investors' money. When victims began approaching authorities, it emerged that the firm siphoned off several crores of rupees, and its key directors and agents fled. A criminal case was registered in 2013 at Kotwali police station in Unnao under multiple sections of the Indian Penal Code (419, 420, 467, 468, 471, 506, 109, 120B) and the Information Technology Act (Section 74). On Nov 22, 2013, the Uttar Pradesh govt transferred the investigation to the EOW's Lucknow unit. EOW officials confirmed that nine persons were named in the FIR. Of them, six were already arrested and sent to jail in earlier operations. Inspector General of Police, EOW, Katarpu Sunil Emmanuel, said the scam's alleged kingpin, Mookandhan Gangam, a Malaysian national who was the director of the company, is still at large. "A Look-Out Circular (LOC) has been issued against him, and efforts are underway to initiate extradition proceedings. Gangam is believed to have coordinated the pan-India scam from abroad while maintaining frontmen like Tiwari in different regions," said the IG.

The scammer's trail

There has been a sharp increase in 'digital arrest' scams in India. As per data from the National Cybercrime Reporting Portal, the reported digital arrest scams and related cybercrimes have more than tripled, rising from 39,925 in 2022 to 1.23 lakh in 2024, with the defrauded amount growing from Rs 91.14 crore to Rs 1,935 crore. Such scams tend to involve fraudsters impersonating law enforcement officials such as the police, the CBI and the Income Tax Department in order to dupe people. The victims, who are from a cross-section of society, including industrialists, private sector professionals, and senior citizens, are ensnared through fake interrogations on video calls. An investigation in this paper has carefully documented several instances where people have been duped of lakhs and crores of rupees. The reports in this paper show how money is transferred from the victims to mule accounts that are used by scammers, and then in some cases to other accounts across the country. In one instance, a staggering sum of nearly Rs 6 crore was transferred over many bank accounts in a matter of a few minutes. In another case, there are indications of the stolen funds being used to buy cryptocurrency. Recoveries have been few and far between. In most cases, the bulk of the amount is withdrawn in cash from the mule accounts. In one case reported in this paper, a retired IAF veteran, who was defrauded of Rs 1.59 crore, has till now got back only Rs 16.1 lakh. In another case, the victim, a former deputy nursing superintendent, who had lost Rs 83 lakh of her pension and savings, has not recovered anything. The authorities and banks have taken steps to spread awareness and monitor suspicious activities. On October 27, 2024, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, during his Mann Ki Baat, warned people against digital arrests. 'Beware of digital arrest frauds. There is no system like digital arrest under the law,' he said. The Reserve Bank of India has also cautioned against digital arrest scams. Banks have launched awareness campaigns to educate the public regarding the nature of the scams. These efforts need to be ramped up urgently. Governments, banks and the central bank must continue to spread awareness about such scams and educate the public about the modus operandi of the fraudsters. Banks must further tighten the KYC process — as per a report in this paper, the addresses of the mule accounts were 'fictitious' in a number of cases. Accounts with large suspicious transactions — for instance, there were 1,960 transactions in one account on one day — need to be flagged immediately and appropriate action taken. Such cases should also be investigated more swiftly.
