Over 200 ‘illegal immigrants from Bangladesh' airlifted from Vadodara on special IAF flight; will be handed over to BSF: Officials
Senior official of the Gujarat Police told The Indian Express that the IAF's Airbus a321 aircraft was deployed to airlift the confirmed Bangladeshi nationals as well as several undocumented suspects to 'drop them off' in the border states of the North-East from where the Border Security Force (BSF) would process their deportation to their home country through the land border. The Bangladeshi nationals were brought to the Vadodara Airforce base under heavy security deployment of the Gujarat ATS and made to board the special plane.
The senior officer, speaking on conditions of anonymity said, 'Since their confinement by the Gujarat Police at the makeshift holding centres in the state, the process of deportation had been underway. Deportation is carried out by the BSF. Therefore, the Gujarat Police coordinated with the FRRO (Foreigners Regional Registration Offices) and made arrangements to have them reach the Air Force base as per the instructions of the Union Ministry of Home Affairs, which has issued the directions to undertake the deportations of those found living in India in the aftermath of the Pahalgam attacks of April…'
The officer said, 'The illegal immigrants will be dropped off in the border states close to Bangladesh from where they will be made to cross over and return by the BSF.'
Officials said that these border states include some in the North East, besides West Bengal.

BJP terms 'Assam Sanmilita Nagarik Abhibartan' a political masquerade; calls out Akhil Gogoi and Lurinjyoti Gogoi's 'political surrender to Congress'
Guwahati (Assam) [India], July 7 (ANI): The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Assam Pradesh, has described the recent 'Assam Sanmilita Nagarik Abhibartan' held at the Pragjyotish Cultural Complex in Machkhowa as a 'politically orchestrated' exercise aimed at 'derailing' state's ongoing development and industrial progress under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma. In a statement issued from the party's state headquarters, BJP spokesperson Ranjib Kumar Sharma said that a section of political leaders and left-leaning intellectuals appeared to be intentionally creating public confusion using false narratives and misleading information to serve their own political interests. He stated that the so-called citizen transformation movement was merely an extension of this agenda. Sharma alleged that by opposing the government's eviction drives aimed at removing encroachments from government lands, forest areas, and Vaishnavite sattra property, the assembly had effectively extended tacit support to what he described as aggressive land encroachment by 'Miya Muslims,' which, he claimed, pose a grave threat to Assam's social, cultural, economic, and political landscape. The BJP spokesperson also pointed out that no mention was made during the event of the large-scale encroachments that had reportedly taken place during the regimes of former Congress Chief Ministers Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi. He cited that, under their administrations, settlers of suspected Bangladeshi origin had illegally occupied over 15,000 bighas of land belonging to more than 900 sattras across the state. Instead of addressing this history, Sharma claimed, the organisers had focused on distorting facts related to recent eviction measures in an attempt to mislead the public. Sharma further commented on remarks made during the event by Raijor Dal president and Sivasagar MLA Akhil Gogoi and Assam Jatiya Parishad president Lurinjyoti Gogoi. He said both leaders had openly expressed willingness to ally with the Congress Party in the upcoming Assembly elections, even if their own parties received a limited share of seats. According to Sharma, such statements reflected a calculated political compromise driven by ambition, rather than ideological conviction. He added that this apparent alignment with the Congress,a party historically associated with 'suppressing' the Assam Movement and the deaths of 855 Assamese youths amounted to a betrayal of the regional and nationalist principles that both leaders had once claimed to uphold. Sharma remarked that the decision to embrace the Congress, which had inflicted long-standing trauma on thousands of Assamese families during the six-year-long agitation, disrespected the sacrifices made during that period and diminished the identity of the Assamese people. The BJP spokesperson also cast doubt on the intentions of the event's key organisers, including Dr Hiren Gohain, Paresh Malakar, and Abdul Mannan. He said these individuals had consistently opposed the Assam Movement and had openly supported the cause of illegal immigration from Bangladesh. Given their history, Sharma suggested that the underlying motives behind the event required no further explanation. (ANI)

Israel strikes Houthi-linked ports in Yemen; targets include seized ship, power plant; IDF cites drone, missile threats
(ANI file photo) The Israeli military on early Monday confirmed carrying out airstrikes on several ports in Yemen, targeting sites linked to the Houthi group. The strikes hit the ports of Hodeidah, Ras Issa, Al-Salif, and the Ras Qantib power plant. In a post on social media platform X, the IDF wrote: 'IAF jets, guided by intelligence, struck Houthi terror targets at the ports of Al Hudaydah, Ras Isa, Salif, and the Ras Kanatib Power Plant... The IDF will continue to act against threats to Israeli civilians—wherever required.' According to the Israel Defense Forces (IDF), the attacks were in response to repeated Houthi assaults on Israel, including the launching of drones and missiles. The IDF also accused the Houthis of threatening global shipping by attacking commercial vessels passing through the Red Sea. One of the key targets was the merchant ship "Galaxy Leader", which the IDF said had been seized by the Houthis in 2023 and equipped with radar systems to track ships in international waters. The Israeli military claimed the ship was being used to support "terror operations" at sea. The Ras Qantib power plant was also hit, with Israel saying it was being used to support military activities.

India was confident of Pahalgam consensus
NEW DELHI: India went into the Brics summit feeling confident it would be able to negotiate the duelling pressures from members of the grouping and get member countries to condemn the Pahalgam attack despite the presence of China and its increasing brazenness in obscuring Pakistan's continuing use of terrorism. Govt sources, while agreeing with the estimates in many quarters that reconciling the divergent perspectives of Brics members would be a challenging task, had expressed confidence that India's enhanced standing would help it overcome any problems. "From being the weakest link in the Brics chain to being an economy with a growth rate and low inflation, a robust digital public infrastructure, there has been a transformation, which has helped us push India-specific concerns," the sources said. Referring to the stand against terrorism, they said since 2014, the Modi govt has focused on getting the world to recognise the need for collective action against the scourge. "India's consistent push to address terrorism in all its forms led to the creation of the Brics counter-terrorism working group, and under India's leadership at the 13th Summit in 2021, the group adopted a Counter Terrorism Action Plan, marking a shift from broad declarations to concrete institutional mechanisms for intelligence sharing, capacity building and preventing the misuse of financial and digital networks by terror networks," according to the sources. They also said India was instrumental in using the forum to support its pitch for democratising multilateral institutions - a theme PM Modi articulated in his address to the Summit on Sunday. Sources also mentioned India's initiatives, including the call for the launch of Brics Startup Forum and inclusion of digital public infrastructure in the core agenda, to argue that India has moved from the sidelines to the centre stage of the group. "India has become a voice that is heard. It isn't easy to imagine that 12 years ago, many seriously debated whether to replace India, with the lowest growth rate and high inflation, with Indonesia as a member," said sources.
