Jacksonville Jaguars' CB Jourdan Lewis shares early impressions of Travis Hunter

USA Today3 days ago
Jaguars' CB Jourdan Lewis recently shared what he's seen from Travis Hunter this offseason.
On a recent appearance on CBS Sports HQ, Jacksonville Jaguars' cornerback Jourdan Lewis shared what it is about Travis Hunter that makes him a special player.
"His confidence, Lewis said. "He believes in himself and his abilities, which are really immense. He's a really talented football player, and he can do it on both sides of the football. He's really cerebral; he knows how to sit in zones, he knows how to play zones, read the quarterback's eyes, and things like that. His ball skills are off the charts."
Those ball skills that Lewis mentioned were on full display during Hunter's Heisman season at Colorado in 2024. As a cornerback, he was targeted just 41 times, but still managed to come away with four interceptions and seven pass breakups, according to PFF.
Up to this point, we haven't seen a lot of Hunter on defense just yet. While he's been in meetings and learning that playbook, the majority of his practice time has come at wide receiver. As GM James Gladstone put it, the team views cornerback as Hunter's more natural position.
However, in the near future, we are going to see more of Hunter at cornerback as the Jaguars continue to work towards having him play both sides of the ball during the same practice regularly.
As defensive coordinator Anthony Campanile described after Thursday's practice, Liam Coen has put together a very detailed plan for Hunter.
"He's a complete football player," Lewis added. "So it's just learning the nuances of the NFL, which he's going to pick up and he's picking up already. I've been really impressed with how poised he's been and how he fits in the scheme of things on the team."

Evan Engram: It was easy being first in building with Jaguars, it's tough with Broncos

Evan Engram is early in his first season with the Broncos, but the tight end has already noticed one significant difference from his time with the Jaguars. Engram thrived on the field for most of his time in Jacksonville and left the Jaguars with 234 catches in 43 games, but he made it sound like he's found a better cultural fit for himself in Denver. Engram said that 'the way that this team connects, the way they push each other' has been his favorite thing about being with the Broncos and illustrated how that connection manifests itself at a training camp press conference. 'I tell people, all my family, it's hard to be the first one in the building,' Engram said, via DNVR Broncos. 'I'm used to being the first one. In Jacksonville, I was always the first one. It was really easy. Here, it's kind of tough. A lot of guys doing it at the highest level. It's just a contagious environment. We all want to get better, and we all have high standards that we all want to achieve together.' The Broncos took a significant step forward in head coach Sean Payton's second season by going from 8-9 to making the playoffs for the first time since winning Super Bowl 50. They lost to Buffalo in their first playoff game, but the commitment that Engram has noticed could help push them even further up the AFC ladder in 2025.

Iowa football QB receives underwhelming spot in CBS' Big Ten rankings

It's been a long decade for Iowa fans hoping to watch decent quarterback play. From Spencer Petras to Alex Padilla to Cade McNamara, it's been a plethora of swings and misses for the Hawkeyes at the position over the past five years. And now Mark Gronowski enters the fold, a transfer from South Dakota State that has everyone excited. While it's certainly fair to question how his play will translate from the FCS to the FBS level, most Iowa fans believe that Gronowski might be the answer at the quarterback position that they've been looking for. CBS Sports, on the other hand, isn't so high on Gronowski entering 2025. David Cobb of CBS Sports put together his ranking of every Big Ten quarterback heading into the 2025 college football season. Cobb's placement of Gronowski on the list is a lot lower than many Hawkeye fans would want or expect. Where is Mark Gronowski on CBS' Big Ten quarterbacks ranking? Cobb ultimately placed Gronowski at 12th in his ranking, meaning he thinks Gronowski will be in the bottom third of all quarterbacks in the conference this season. Gronowski led South Dakota State to consecutive FCS national titles while proving himself to be a dual-threat talent during a four-year stint as the starter. He's a highly decorated and grizzled veteran with a 49-6 career record, and he will be an automatic upgrade over what the Hawkeyes have trotted out at quarterback over the past several years. Limitations with the supporting cast and system will cap his production, but Gronowski will be a breath of fresh air for the program. - Cobb, CBS Sports Gronowski is ranked just ahead of Billy Edwards Jr. of Wisconsin and just behind Aidan Chiles of Michigan State. Drew Allar of Penn State is at the top of the list, while Drake Lindsey of Minnesota brings up the rear. While Iowa fans may not agree with this ranking from Cobb, he does make a solid point about the supporting cast around Gronowski. If the Hawkeyes want to achieve their goals this season, they'll need some skill position players to step up and elevate their production. Whether that's Reece Vander Zee, Addison Ostrenga, Kamari Moulton, or someone under the radar, it'll be critical for Iowa to have its supporting cast do everything they can to help Gronowski. Gronowski will get a chance to outperform his ranking when the 2025 season kicks off on Aug. 30 against Albany. Until then, questions will remain about his ability to excel at the FBS level.
