The Rocket Classic will have a new spot on the PGA Tour schedule in 2026

USA Today30-06-2025
The Rocket Classic is getting a new tee time in 2026.
While the full PGA Tour schedule has yet to be released, the Rocket Classic will be moving back in the schedule. The new dates of July 30-Aug. 2 will push the tournament after the British Open, which is scheduled for July 16-19 at Royal Birkdale next year.
The new dates, announced during the Sunday, June 29, final round, works well for both tournament and club.
Tournament organizers have long struggled to attract the most popular golfers to the event. Part of that is the tournament is not a 'signature' event on the tour, a status that is unlikely to change anytime soon due to cost.
But it was also partly because of its position on the schedule, where it is preceded by the U.S. Open and the Travelers Championship (a signature event) and succeeded by the Scottish Open, all events with much bigger purses than the Rocket.
This combination has resulted in many top golfers choosing to skip the event to rest and prepare for the bigger events, which has in turn made Detroit a less prestigious tournament to the chagrin of its organizers. With the new late July/early August date, golfers who are near the cut line of the FedEx Cup playoffs may choose to play the tournament, which will strengthen the field.
For the club, the new dates will allow them to complete renovations on the course. Detroit Golf Club plans to spend $16.1 million dollars renovating greens and bunkers as well as removing the pond on the 14th hole. The course will also be lengthened by 300 yards.
With the extra weeks, the course will have more time to mature and will thus play faster, which both the golfers and the PGA Tour like.
The movement of the tournament also means that it may be more likely to stay in Detroit. The organizers' unhappiness with the position on the schedule has long been a sticking point, and the Classic is only under contract through 2026, though there is an option for Rocket Companies to extend through 2027. Getting a new date and increasing the strength of the field will likely help the tournament remain in Detroit.

PGA Tour pro Zac Blair goes 'undercover' for driver fitting at golf shop ahead of 3M Open

BLAINE, Minn. – PGA Tour pro Zac Blair has the swing speed and spin characteristics of the average 1 handicap. That's according to a Golf Galaxy fitter in the greater Minneapolis area. Blair, 34, got in to the 2025 3M Open field off the alternate list on Wednesday afternoon when Anders Albertson withdrew. But the course and practice facilities were closed early in the afternoon due to a storm that hit TPC Twin Cities. So, Blair did what any diehard golfer would do — he drove to a nearby golf shop and scheduled a driver fitting so he could hit balls on a simulator. He wound up at a Golf Galaxy and had someone video the encounter with a staffer. He played his college golf at BYU and entered the week ranked No. 300 in the Official World Golf Ranking. It hasn't been the best season for Blair, who has just one top-25 finish on Tour and has missed the cut at more than half his starts. He's still winless on Tour, losing in a playoff last July at the Isco Championship. Going to a golf store to hit balls feels very on brand for Blair, who has sought out the best courses in the world during his travels and created The Buck Club, a course he dreamed of building in his native Utah before ultimately teaming with Kye Goalby to build The Tree Farm in South Carolina. But he is way better than a 1 handicap and surely could school the club fitter, who didn't recognize Blair in a T-shirt and sweatpants, and near the end of the video suggests he's the better golfer between the two. Emma Raducanu beats Naomi Osaka at the DC Open in their first matchup

WASHINGTON — Emma Raducanu dominated her first career matchup against Naomi Osaka, winning the showdown at the D.C. Open on Thursday between past U.S. Open champions 6-4, 6-2. 'I did feel it had a bit of extra,' Raducanu said. 'It's a match that I feel a lot of people were talking about beforehand. I knew that ahead of the match, but I actually quite like these kind of matchups, where you're playing a great opponent. A lot of people have eyes on the match. They're into it. I enjoy it. I'm just pleased with how I was able to navigate playing a four-time Slam champ.' Raducanu, the first qualifier to claim a Grand Slam title when she did that in New York in 2021, saved the only two break points she faced and managed to break the big-serving Osaka three times. 'I'm serving better, and that helps a lot. I always returned pretty decent, but the element of just when I serve well, it does add another dimension to my game,' Raducanu said. 'I'm able to kind of start the points better and look for my forehand and get that into play a bit more and then dictate.' Osaka was hurt by seven double-faults. 'I feel like from the baseline, I was doing pretty well,' said Osaka, who the U.S. Open and Australian Open twice each. 'I think there are certain situations where she got one more ball back and I was kind of just looking and waiting.' Raducanu, who is ranked 46th, will face Maria Sakkari in the quarterfinals. Sakkari eliminated No. 2 seed Emma Navarro on Wednesday. Venus Williams, the seven-time Grand Slam singles champion back on tour at age 45, was scheduled to face Magdalena Frech at night. Winners in men's action Thursday at the hard-court tournament in Washington included No. 4 seed Ben Shelton, No. 7 Alex de Minaur, No. 8 Daniil Medvedev, No. 12 Alejandro Davidovich Fokina and No. 14 Brandon Nakashima.

LIV Golf to stop paying DP World Tour fines for players, per report

A major change could soon be coming to LIV Golf, and it has nothing to do with the on-course product. Telegraph Sport reported Thursday that LIV Golf has informed its players it will stop paying DP World Tour fines for its players to remain members on the circuit. That change will take effect next season. It's pivotal for a couple reasons, but it has large ramifications for the Ryder Cup. Members of the European squad must be DP World Tour members. Players on LIV Golf, like Jon Rahm, Tyrrell Hatton, Adrian Meronk and Tom McKibbin, have maintained their DP World Tour membership due to LIV Golf paying the fines. Former DP World Tour golfers competing for LIV Golf are in violation of the DP World Tour's conflicting events policy, which requires a release to play elsewhere. In April 2023, the Tour won a U.K. arbitration case that allows it to enforce the penalties. That means if players want to compete on the DP World Tour, they'll have to pay a fine, among other penalties. Rahm and Hatton are currently appealing that decision. Telegraph Sport reports the league has dished out 15 million euros, with another 8 to 10 million euros due in outstanding fines. The hearing on the appeal will take place after the Ryder Cup in September, making them eligible to play. Rahm's manager, in a letter to Tour chief executive Guy Kinnings, said Rahm 'has no intention of paying any fines," per the report. A source also told Telegraph Sport, "There would be outrage if the Tour caved in. The point is that the Tour fully expected the peace negotiations between the PGA Tour and the Saudis to have been settled by now, so they kicked this can down the road, happy in the belief it wouldn't matter. But with no deal in the pipeline – anything but, in fact – there is a huge problem looming. 'And at this point, unless the impasse between the two parties is broken, or the Tour changes its rules or even quits the strategic alliance with the PGA Tour and rows in with the Saudis, it is inevitable that the Europe Ryder Cup will be weakened for the match in Ireland in 2027. These are uncertain times and there is a lot of angst about what happens next.' LIV Golf is playing its 11th event of 14 in 2025 this week at LIV Golf UK at JCB Golf & Country Club.
