Jordan Spieth Makes Personal Announcement Ahead of 2025 Open Championship

Jordan Spieth Makes Personal Announcement Ahead of 2025 Open Championship originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The fourth and final major of the PGA Tour season is set to unfold this coming week at Royal Portrush Golf Club in the United Kingdom, beginning with the first round on Thursday. One familiar name making his return is Jordan Spieth, who was forced to withdraw during the first round of the Travelers Championship three weeks ago due to injury. Spieth, the winner of the 146th Open Championship in 2017, will be back in action at a venue where he's previously seen success. Ahead of this week's tournament, Spieth received some exciting personal news that could provide a boost of motivation. On Sunday morning, he and his wife Annie Verret announced the birth of their third child. Earlier in the week, Spieth had appeared on the Up & Adams Show with Kay Adams, where he shared that the couple was officially on "baby watch." Just days later, the family's newest addition has arrived. "We added a new member to the foursome - Sully Spieth! Everyone is doing great," Spieth posted on Instagram. Spieth noted that he is expected to arrive overseas later than usual for The Open, but should still have plenty of time to prepare for his return to the course following a bumpy 2025 campaign. Despite the struggles he's faced since his last Tour victory in 2022, Spieth continues to show flashes of the brilliance that made him a three-time major champion—he just hasn't been able to put it all together over the course of four rounds When it comes to The Open specifically, he's consistently performed well throughout his 11 appearances. Spieth has never missed the cut and, in addition to his 2017 victory, he's recorded a runner-up finish, a tie for eighth, and a tie for ninth. The last time The Open was held at Royal Portrush in 2019, he finished 20thThis story was originally reported by Athlon Sports on Jul 13, 2025, where it first appeared.

Luke Donald Agrees to Ryder Cup Rule Change, Opening Door for Keegan Bradley

Translations may contain inaccuracies—please refer to the original content. Keegan Bradley's bid to become the first U.S. Ryder Cup playing captain since Arnold Palmer in 1963 just got a major boost, and it came with a nod from Team Europe. Fresh off a top-30 finish at the Open Championship at Royal Portrush, Bradley carded a total score of 280, ending the week at 4-under par. While not a headline-grabbing result, it was enough to keep him steady at No. 10 in the U.S. Ryder Cup standings. Bradley's playing form has been quietly consistent. He won the Travelers Championship last month and had five T-5 finishes. But with automatic qualification unlikely, the 39-year-old captain may have to pick himself, a move that's now more feasible due to a rule change agreed upon by Team Europe. Bradley's Road to Playing Captain Boosts as Europe Agrees Rule Change According to Telegraph Sport's Monday report, European captain Luke Donald approved a modification to the longstanding "captains' agreement," allowing one of Bradley's vice-captains to act as a de facto captain during sessions. "Keegan can only change the overarching contract with Luke and Ryder Cup Europe's approval," a source told Telegraph Sport. "The contract between the teams includes things like how many vice-captains a team can have, etc. That is used year on year and captains rarely change that. But Keegan went to Luke with this clause and Luke generously agreed. We don't want any bad blood between the camps." According to the report, Jim Furyk, who captained Team USA in 2018, is expected to step into the captain's role when Bradley is on the course. Bradley's backup plan to tee as the playing captain at Bethpage During the Ryder Cup dinner earlier this year, the U.S. captain told Golf Channel's Todd Lewis that he "will talk to the six (players) that did qualify, get a sense of their feelings about him being a playing captain on the team, and then make a decision from there." This was in case he didn't qualify for the automatic qualification positions. As of now, Scottie Scheffler remains the only player officially qualified for Team USA. But on Sunday night, Bradley confirmed that Bryson DeChambeau, currently fifth in the standings, will also be part of the squad regardless of whether he finishes in the top six. "Bryson is going to be a very important piece to us winning the Ryder Cup," Bradley told Sports Illustrated through text. "He brings so much. He brings energy, passion, but most importantly, he's one of the best players on the planet". Apart from Scheffler and Bradley, Xander Schauffele, J.J. Spaun, Russell Henley and Harris English are the remaining top six. More Golf: Golfer struck by lightning at Iron Man tournament, airlifted to hospital

Report: Luke Donald accepts Keegan Bradley's addendum to Ryder Cup captain's agreement

Keegan Bradley appears to be paving his way to be the first Ryder Cup playing captain in over 60 years. According to a report by Telegraph Sport, Bradley recently asked European captain Luke Donald about inserting a clause into the captain's agreement that would allow Bradley to designate one of his assistant captains as the acting captain during sessions in which Bradley competes. This is important, the report notes, because only captains are allowed to give advice to competitors during play. Donald reportedly accepted the terms of the addendum. 'Keegan can only change the overarching contract with Luke and Ryder Cup Europe's approval,' a source told Telegraph Sport. 'The contract between the teams includes things like how many vice-captains a team can have, etc. That is used year on year and captains rarely change that. But Keegan went to Luke with this clause and Luke generously agreed. We don't want any bad blood between the camps.' Bradley is currently No. 10 in U.S. points and has recently changed his tune about becoming the first playing captain since Arnold Palmer at the 1963 Ryder Cup. 'I will play if I feel like it will help the team,' Bradley said last month after winning the Travelers Championship.

Rory McIlroy's ex-manager's 'terrible' comments on Tommy Fleetwood's caddie slammed

Claims that Tommy Fleetwood's caddie should take some blame for his Travelers Championship defeat have been rubbished by a member of Scottie Scheffler's coaching team Rory McIlroy's former manager has been blasted for comments he made about Tommy Fleetwood's caddie. McIlroy and Fleetwood played together over the first two days at The Open Championship, with the home hero ending day two at under three under par, seven shots off the lead held by Scottie Scheffler, with Fleetwood two further back from his Ryder Cup team-mate. ‌ The Englishman was hoping for a strong performance at Portrush to help erase the memory of his heartbreaking near miss at the Travelers Championship. Leading by three shots going into the final four, Fleetwood was on course for his maiden PGA Tour title. ‌ However, he was overhauled by US Ryder Cup captain Keegan Bradley after three-putting on the 18th to lose by just one shot. Following that gut-wrenching defeat, Andrew 'Chubby' Chandler, who represented McIlroy until 2011, took aim at Fleetwood's caddie Ian Finnis, blaming the bagman for his choice on the 72nd hole. ‌ Per GolfMagic, Chandler said: "He should have won at the Travelers, shouldn't he? I'm not throwing Ian Finnis under the bus, but nobody looked at the caddie at all when he didn't win that last one. "The caddie was half to blame. The caddie was involved in the decision-making. It was the wrong club at 18. It's funny, people gun for certain people, don't they? Finnis has escaped it. You think of the stick [McIlroy's caddie] Harry Diamond gets." However, renowned putting coach Phil Kenyon, who has worked closely with Scheffler, has jumped to the defence of Finnis. He said: 'For Chubby to say that, it's just inaccurate. Tommy's won worldwide with Ian. ‌ 'If you look at Tommy's career with Ian, they've done a great job together. Ian has been on most of his wins, and under the extreme amount of pressure, you want someone that you can trust and rely on by your side. "Tommy and Ian are a great fit. That is absolutely just a terrible statement from someone whose opinion I wouldn't trust anyway." ‌ Kenyon also rubbished claims that putting is a weak point of Fleetwood's game, adding: "Tommy Fleetwood is a good putter. I think there's a really horrendous narrative around his putting, which is perpetuated by certain facets of the media which don't look at stats. "They just listen to themselves and perpetuate their own narrative. But if you look at Tommy this year statistically, he's a better putter than he is a driver of the ball. He's in the top 35 on the PGA Tour." "Now, anyone that's in that top 50 is a fantastic putter. You're talking about the top 50 players and the putters in the game. At times, I think, a very poor narrative in and around Tommy's putting. But all you've got to do is look at the analytics to indicate what the truth is." Fleetwood has now recorded 42 top-10 finishes without winning on the PGA Tour. He's finished second twice in the majors and was also runner-up to Scheffler at the Olympics in Paris for Team GB last year.
