France's Orano says its Niger uranium mine on verge of bankruptcy
Orano was forced to suspend production at SOMAIR after authorities halted exports last year. Niger's government seized the operation in December and announced plans to nationalise it last month, joining a wave of West African governments seeking greater control of natural resources from foreign companies.
Niger, which also exports gold and coal, is the world's seventh-largest uranium producer. The country accounted for about 15% of Orano's uranium supply when its local unit operated at full capacity.
Orano told Reuters in emailed responses to questions that it had been flagging SOMAIR's worsening financial position since October as its year-long dispute with the West African nation escalated.
"The Nigerien authorities' insistence on continuing production expenses at any cost has led to the current situation where the SOMAIR company is on the verge of bankruptcy," Orano said.
Niger's ministry of mines did not immediately respond to a request for comment on Orano's assessment of the unit's financial position.

As the country battles with only one driver's licence card machine, Transport Minister Barbara Creecy says her department has struck an agreement with the Government Printing Works to provide a backup if the existing fault-prone machine is out of service. Creecy shared the details during her budget speech delivered at the transport department budget vote in Parliament on Wednesday. Driver licence card machine South Africa's only driver's licence card printer has been plagued by breakdowns. The machine has been out of order since January, creating a massive backlog in the issuing of driver's licences. Few to no cards have been issued since the start of the year. 'It is a matter of public record that the department has taken a self-review application on this matter to the courts. The old card machine is currently fixed and we are hard at work to clear out the printing backlog of licence cards. 'To ensure we have a backup solution, we have signed an MOU with the Government Printing Works. We expect that within three months, this backup solution will be able to print driver's licence cards,' Creecy said. In September last year, the Transport Department appointed French multinational identity technology company Idemia as the preferred bidder for the multimillion-rand tender to procure a new driver's licence printing machine. Irregularities However, a week before Idemia was selected, it was dealt a blow with Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) cancelling a deal that would have seen the French company provide technology like self-boarding gates at nine South African airports. In September 2024, Creecy instructed the AG to expedite and widen the audit scope for the new driving licence card procurement process after new evidence emerged of alleged serious irregularities in the decision to make Idemia the preferred bidder. The AG also found that the identified instances of non-compliance were due to the DLCA's inadequate budget analysis, which is part of the demand management process. 'Bids are not being evaluated according to the evaluation criteria as per the bid specifications and scoring is inconsistent during the bid evaluation process.' In May, the Automotive Business Council of South Africa (naamsa) reported that the fifth month of the year signified a turning point for the local automotive market. Taking a glance at the top 10 best-selling car brands in South Africa in June (see the list below), the momentum gained from May's new-car sales continued into June, with most of the country's top-selling automakers recording increases in sales. Toyota once again lead the sales charts, with the local arm of the Japanese automaker, in June, recording a 1 360 unit increase in overall sales over May. Suzuki and Volkswagen remained in second and third place, respectively. There were a few changes, though, with Ford surpassing Hyundai for fourth spot, while Kia, with 1 230 units sold, was relegated from 10th to 12th position. BMW Group and Renault (1 318 units) took the 10th and 11th spots, respectively. In addition to the aforementioned South Korean and French automakers, the manufacturers who missed out on the top 10 were Nissan (13th, with 1 183 units), Omoda and Jaecoo (14th, with 1 009 units) and Jetour (15th, with 683 units).
