Ready to assist Madrasi Camp residents if they choose to return to state: TN govt
Citing the demolition exercise being carried out in the Madrasi Camp area in Delhi from Sunday, following an order of the Delhi High Court, the Tamil Nadu government said all legal avenues available to them have now been exhausted.
Madrasi Camp is a slum settlement located along the bank of the Barapullah Jangpura drain, near Nizamuddin Railway Station in South Delhi.
In an official release, the government said that it would assist the residents of Madrasi Camp who choose to return to their native districts in Tamil Nadu and this is in keeping with the orders of Chief Minister M K Stalin.
"Comprehensive support, including assistance for livelihood and other essential needs, will be extended to them. This assistance will be facilitated through the offices of the concerned District Collectors to ensure timely and effective implementation."
According to the government, the Madrasi Camp comprises 370 slum dwellings and is predominantly inhabited by persons of Tamil Nadu origin. The Delhi High Court had said that the camp was an unauthorised encroachment on the bank of the Barapullah drain.
"This has led to obstruction and blockage of the drain, causing significant waterlogging in the surrounding areas, especially during the monsoon season." Accordingly, the court directed that eligible residents be rehabilitated and relocated under the provisions of the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board Act and the Delhi Slum & JJ Rehabilitation and Relocation Policy, 2015.
In compliance with the directions of the court, a survey was undertaken by the Eligibility Determination Committee to assess the eligibility of all residents for rehabilitation and relocation.
Pursuant to this exercise, the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board has determined that 215 out of the 370 residents are eligible for allotment. Accordingly, these eligible beneficiaries have been allotted residential units under the Economically Weaker Section category of the Delhi Development Authority located in Narela, Delhi. Furthermore, all legal petitions filed by the residents of Madrasi Camp have been adjudicated and disposed of by the High Court of Delhi, vide order dated 09.05.2025.
The said order mandates the commencement of demolition activities at Madrasi Camp with effect from 01.06.2025. Thus, all legal avenues available to the residents for retaining the unauthorised constructions at the site have been duly exhausted.
"As per the instructions of the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu, the Tamil Nadu House in New Delhi has been tasked with actively facilitating and overseeing coordination efforts. Reaffirming its unwavering commitment to the welfare of persons of Tamil Nadu origin residing outside the State, the Government of Tamil Nadu is in active coordination with the residents of Madrasi Camp to ensure that every possible support is extended to them without delay," the government said.

The court passed the interim order in response to a public interest litigation that questioned the naming of schemes after Chief Minister M K Stalin, according to a report from The Indian Express. Initiatives such as Ungaludan Stalin and Nalam Kaakkum Stalin were specifically cited, with the petitioner arguing that such branding misuses public resources for political promotion, the report further added. The bench, comprising Chief Justice Sanjay V Gangapurwala and Justice P D Audikesavalu, observed that the use of names or images of living persons in government scheme promotions goes against the principles of neutrality and fairness in public administration. The defence also stated that the schemes themselves had public welfare objectives and that the challenge was politically motivated. Despite these claims, the court issued a directive restraining the state from continuing such promotional practices. It, however, clarified that it is not halting the implementation of welfare schemes, only regulating how they are named and advertised. Party symbols and photographs also banned The interim order extends to the use of political party logos and photographs of living leaders in any form of scheme-related communication, including banners, posters, and advertisements. The court has granted 10 days for the respondents, including the Election Commission and relevant state departments, to file their replies. The matter is scheduled for further hearing on August 13.

After questioning by HC, Centre withdraws order for 6 cuts in Udaipur Files
NEW DELHI: The Additional Solicitor General (ASG) informed the Delhi High Court on Friday that the Central Government has decided to withdraw its directive recommending six cuts in the film Udaipur Files. This move came after the HC questioned whether the Centre had the authority to order such changes while exercising its revisional powers. Following this development, the Delhi High Court disposed of two petitions that sought to halt the release of the film. It directed all involved parties to appear before the appropriate revisional authority on Monday and instructed that a decision be made by Wednesday. Udaipur Files is based on the 2022 murder of Kanhaiya Lal, a tailor from Udaipur, who was killed by Mohammad Riyaz and Mohammad Ghous, allegedly over a social media post supporting an ex-BJP leader. However, the film has drawn sharp criticism. Islamic scholar Arshad Madani and Mohammed Javed—one of the accused in the murder case—petitioned the Supreme Court to stop the film's release, arguing it was inflammatory and communal. Senior Advocate Kapil Sibal, appearing for Madani, claimed the film spreads hatred and unfairly targets the Muslim community, warning against allowing hate speech under the guise of free speech. Earlier, the Supreme Court permitted the government to review the movie. A review panel subsequently recommended changes before release. The film's producers then approached the court to challenge the HC's stay on the release. Madani contends the movie generalises a criminal act, portraying an entire community as complicit or supportive of terrorism. Meanwhile, the murder case is ongoing in a Special NIA Court, with hearings set to resume after the summer recess.

Will never ally with BJP or its affiliates: Vaiko
CHENNAI: MDMK general secretary Vaiko on Friday dismissed speculation about his party snapping ties with the DMK and reiterated that his party will never have any association, even at any slightest level, with the BJP or its affiliates. Addressing reporters after meeting Chief Minister M K Stalin at his residence to enquire about his health, he strongly refuted reports from sections of the media claiming that the MDMK might sever ties with the DMK. 'Such reports are baseless and fabricated,' he said. He asserted that his party will never compromise its stance in opposition to Hindutva forces. 'I have consistently criticised the BJP and the RSS in all my public meetings and will continue to do so. Under no circumstance will the MDMK have any form of relationship, even remotely, with these forces,' he said. He expressed confidence that the DMK-led alliance will secure a majority and return to power in 2026. 'There will be no coalition government in Tamil Nadu in 2026. Under the leadership of M K Stalin, the DMK alliance will win a clear mandate,' he said. On the murder of young software professional Kavin Selvaganesh in Tirunelveli, Vaiko said, 'The police have taken swift action in the case. To prevent such honour killings, stringent laws must be enacted.'
