"There are only so many amenity spaces in Kothrud and none in Dahanukar Colony. We want them to conduct the plantation of all the saplings in the amenity spaces to ensure no loss of green cover. More importantly, they should do it on the project premises. We are also trying to revive the Smruti Van in Warje where the compensatory plantation can take place," said Ameet Singh, a citizen who attended the hearing.
Residents objected to the felling of trees without completion of the tree census, a lack of transparency with project documents, and no scientific age calculation. They also objected to the lack of alternative project plans, non-compliance with road and urban planning designs, no identified compensatory plantation locations and failed transplantation.
"PMC is supposed to plant over 1,600 saplings as compensation for March. Moreover, our motive is to get the trees transplanted, as some trees would be felled for the projects nevertheless. Kothrud is already concrete enough, and now, with the redevelopment and felling, heat will only grow, and the last of the green cover will deplete," said Rekha Joshi, another citizen at the meeting.
The attendees pointed out that many of these trees are old and heritage trees. The applicants for the tree felling proposals were also present at the hearing and agreed with the citizens' objections.
"The meeting was successful as the applicants will now try to transplant all the felled trees on the project premises. If not, they replant the trees on other amenity spaces," said Vijay Naikal, assistant commissioner, Kothrud-Bavdhan ward office.

Lok Sabha LoP Rahul Gandhi takes jibe at PM Modi over US President's ceasefire claims
Congress leader and Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition (LoP) Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday hit out at Prime Minister Narendra Modi for his silence over repeated " ceasefire " claims made by US President Donald Trump . Suggesting that one can't hide from reality, he said that the entire world knows that Trump announced a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan. There are several major issues that we would like to discuss related to defence, defence manufacturing, and Operation Sindoor. The condition is not normal; the entire nation knows," he added. Intensifying his attack, Gandhi stated that the Prime Minister has not been able to provide a single response to Trump's claims about a ceasefire, which he has reiterated 25 times so far. Live Events "Those who call themselves 'deshbhakt' have run away. The Prime Minister is unable to give a single statement. Trump has claimed 25 times that he has announced a ceasefire. Who is he? This is not his work. However, the Prime Minister didn't respond once. This is reality. Can't hide from it," the Congress MP said. "They have destroyed our foreign policy. You can hardly count on your fingers the number of countries that have supported us. No one has supported us," Gandhi added. This comes after a recent statement made by Donald Trump, where he repeated his claims of "stopping the war between India and Pakistan" in the name of trade deals. "We have stopped wars between India and Pakistan. They were probably going to end up in a nuclear war. They shot down five planes in the last attack. It was back and forth, back and forth. I called them and I said no more trade if you do this. They are both powerful nuclear nations. Who knows where that would have ended up, and I stopped it," Trump said. Earlier in the day, Senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh lambasted the Narendra Modi government over its refusal to rebut the claims made by US President Donald Trump of announcing a "ceasefire" between India and Pakistan. He said that the claims of a "ceasefire" made by Trump have reached their silver jubilee with the US president reiterating them 25 times in the last 73 days. The Congress leader attacked the centre for not providing a definite date for discussing the Pahalgam terror attack and Operation Sindoor that followed. "As the Modi government continues in its refusal to give firm dates for a debate on Pahalgam-Sindoor in Parliament and as the Modi government persists in its refusal to commit to a reply by the PM in the debate, President Trump reaches the silver jubilee, the quarter century mark on his claims. He has trumpeted 25 times in the last 73 days, but the Prime Minister of India is totally quiet - finding time only to travel abroad and to destabilise democratic institutions at home," Ramesh, General Secretary incharge of Communications in Congress, posted on X.

Per capita income in Tamil Nadu surpasses national average, exceeds growth of AIADMK regime: CM Stalin

"Another achievement in the long list is Tamil Nadu has secured the second place among the states with a per capita income of Rs 1,96,309. This achievement reflects the success of the Dravidian model's visionary plans, industrial development, efforts to attract investments and public welfare schemes," Thennarasu said on 'X'. Live Events "This achievement is the next crown jewel for our Dravidian model government, which is working with the noble principle of 'everything for everyone'" he added. In the last year of the last (AIADMK) regime, 2020-21, the per capita income of Tamil Nadu was only Rs 1.43 lakh. Under the DMK rule, the per capita income increased to Rs 1.96 lakh in 2024-25, with an average growth of 8.15 per cent in the last four years as against only 4.42 per cent growth from 2016-17 to 2020-21 of the previous regime. Such a high average growth rate is a testament to the successful Dravidian Model of governance. On the national front, the national average per capita income in 2024-25 was only 1.14 lakh. The national average growth rate for the last decade from 2014-15 to 2024-25 was only 57 per cent. "But, to everyone's surprise, the growth rate achieved by Tamil Nadu is 83.3 per cent. This was possible because of the government of the Chief Minister Stalin, focused on economic progress, focusing on the welfare of the people," the Finance Minister stated. He called for measures to sustain "the same enthusiasm," and move even faster towards a one trillion US dollar economy under the present leadership.

Trump pulls US out of UN cultural agency UNESCO for second time
President Donald Trump has decided to pull the United States out of the "woke" and "divisive" U.N. culture and education agency UNESCO, the White House said on Tuesday, repeating a move he took in his first term that was reversed by Joe Biden. The withdrawal from the Paris-based agency, which was founded after World War Two to promote peace through international cooperation in education, science, and culture, will take effect at the end of next year. Lulutox Undo White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly said UNESCO "supports woke, divisive cultural and social causes that are totally out-of-step with the commonsense policies that Americans voted for." The State Department accused UNESCO of supporting "a globalist, ideological agenda for international development at odds with our America First foreign policy". Live Events It said its decision to admit the Palestinians as a member state was "highly problematic, contrary to U.S. policy, and contributed to the proliferation of anti-Israel rhetoric." UNESCO chief Audrey Azoulay said she deeply regretted Trump's decision, but it was "expected, and UNESCO has prepared for it." Posting on X, French President Emmanuel Macron professed "unwavering support" for the "universal protector" of world heritage and said the U.S. move would not weaken France's commitment to UNESCO. China's foreign ministry said Washington's decision was "not the behaviour expected of a responsible major country", and expressed China's staunch support of UNESCO's work, its spokesperson told reporters during a press briefing on Wednesday. UNESCO officials said the U.S. withdrawal would have some limited impact on U.S.-financed programs. Azoulay said UNESCO had diversified funding sources, receiving only about 8% of its budget from Washington. UNESCO was one of several international bodies Trump withdrew from during his first term, along with the World Health Organization, the Paris Agreement climate change accord, and the U.N. Human Rights Council. During his second term, he has largely reinstated those steps. Trump's pick to be his U.N. envoy, Mike Waltz, said this month the United Nations needs reform while expressing confidence that "we can make the U.N. great again." ISRAEL PRAISES US 'MORAL SUPPORT AND LEADERSHIP' Israel welcomed the U.S. decision with its U.N. ambassador, Danny Danon, accusing UNESCO of "consistent misguided anti-Israel bias." In a post on X, Israel's Foreign Minister Gideon Sa'ar, thanked Washington for its "moral support and leadership" and said that "Singling out Israel and politicization by member states must end, in this and all professional UN agencies." U.S. Senator Jeanne Shaheen, the senior Democrat on the Republican-controlled Senate Foreign Relations Committee, called Trump's decision "short-sighted and a win for China," which she said became the largest financial contributor to UNESCO after Trump last withdrew from the agency. UNESCO officials said all relevant agency statements had been agreed with both Israel and the Palestinians over the past eight years. Azoulay said the U.S. had given the same reasons for its pullout as it had seven years ago "even though the situation has changed profoundly, political tensions have receded, and UNESCO today constitutes a rare forum for consensus on concrete and action-oriented multilateralism." "These claims also contradict the reality of UNESCO's efforts, particularly in the field of Holocaust education and the fight against antisemitism," she added. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization is best known for designating World Heritage Sites, including the U.S. Grand Canyon and Egypt's pyramids. It lists 26 sites in the United States, including the Statue of Liberty, on its World Heritage List which highlights 1,248 global locations of "outstanding universal value." Washington has had a troubled relationship with UNESCO over the years. It was a founding member in 1945 but first withdrew in 1984 to protest alleged financial mismanagement and perceived anti-U.S. bias during the Cold War. It returned in 2003 under President George W. Bush, who said UNESCO had undertaken needed reforms, but in 2011 the Obama administration announced it was stopping funding for the agency following its vote to grant the Palestinians full membership. Trump's first administration announced in 2017 it was quitting after accusing UNESCO of anti-Israeli bias, with Washington owing $542 million in dues, before former President Biden reversed the decision in 2023.
