Taobao's daily on-demand orders soar as China's instant e-commerce war heats up
Combined daily orders on
Taobao Instant Commerce – the company's latest push into on-demand delivery – and food delivery app Ele.me, reached 80 million, Taobao said on its official WeChat account on Monday. Daily active users on Taobao Instant Commerce surpassed 200 million.
Alibaba owns the South China Morning Post.
The figures were released a day after Meituan, Alibaba's bigger rival in the on-demand delivery sector, announced it had achieved record orders for its instant delivery service. On Saturday, Meituan said daily transaction volume covering food and retail goods had reached an all-time high of 120 million, briefly crashing its servers in certain areas.
The Alibaba figures reflect the rapid progress achieved by Taobao Instant Commerce, which was launched in late April as the company's answer to Meituan's Instashopping and JD.com's food delivery service. The service reached 10 million daily orders within its first week and 40 million within the first month.

Transaction volumes have accelerated over the past few weeks as e-commerce players started to offer more discounts and subsidies to boost consumption during the peak summer season. It took the platform nearly a month to grow daily orders from 40 million to 60 million, but just 12 days to gain another 20 million.

'Amid an ever-changing geopolitical landscape and constantly escalating uncertainties, Hong Kong is the place that promises security and development. Hong Kong stocks snap 3-day decline on optimism about US trade deals
Hong Kong stocks rose on Tuesday, arresting a three-day decline, on optimism that the US will sweeten its tariff deals with key trading partners after the Trump administration postponed the effective date of new levies on 14 countries. Advertisement The Hang Seng Index climbed 0.3 per cent to 23,960.03 as of 10.01am local time, while the Hang Seng Tech Index gained 0.5 per cent. On the mainland, the CSI 300 Index and the Shanghai Composite Index both added 0.2 per cent. Tech stocks led gains, with Baidu rising 2.6 per cent to HK$88.05 and Kuaishou Technology advancing 2.4 per cent to HK$64.55. Xiaomi gained 1.7 per cent to HK$58.20 and Tencent Holdings added 0.2 per cent to HK$503. US President Donald Trump told Japan and South Korea that new tariffs would take effect on August 1 after applying a 25 per cent rate on the two countries, fanning speculation that there would be additional wiggle room in future negotiations. The tariff rates imposed on other countries including Malaysia, Indonesia and Laos ranged from 25 to 40 per cent, according to the White House. Hong Kong and EU are natural partners on 2050 carbon neutral goal
Climate change is one of the defining challenges of our time. Last year marked the hottest on record , and extreme weather is becoming more frequent and more severe. Just last month, scientists warned that we have only three years left to limit global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius above pre-industrial levels as set by the Paris Agreement. Advertisement This target has long been the pillar of climate efforts worldwide. Our planet is not waiting for us. The European Union and Hong Kong share this conviction: the world must change course, and quickly. We have everything it takes to jointly move ahead on the green transition, not least our shared ambition of achieving carbon neutrality by 2050 . Our ties are close, broad and deep. The EU is one of Hong Kong's major trading partners, with bilateral trade in goods and services amounting to HK$605 billion (US$77.1 billion) and EU investment in the city reaching HK$758 billion last year. We are the largest foreign business community in Hong Kong. For more than half of the roughly 1,600 EU companies based here, Hong Kong serves as their regional headquarters. EU citizens and companies contribute across nearly every sector of Hong Kong's economy and society – from finance, transport and logistics to retail, food and beverage, construction and engineering, as well as Hong Kong's excellent universities and its vibrant arts scene. Many are actively involved in the local green transition, working in green finance, sustainable mobility, clean energy, green infrastructure and waste management. Accordingly, we are contributing not only to Hong Kong's prosperity and vibrancy but are also actively supporting Hong Kong's green transition. Advertisement The EU has long been a world leader on climate action, sustainability and green growth. Importantly, we have busted a long-standing myth. Since 1990, we have reduced emissions by 37 per cent while growing our economy by 68 per cent. This is clear evidence that the green transformation is not a barrier to growth but rather a driver. Furthermore, we are on track to cut emissions by at least 55 per cent by 2030 and are aiming for a 90 per cent reduction by 2040.
