2nd Youth Test: India reach 51/1 after Ekansh Singh ton takes England to 309
Chelmsford (UK), Jul 21 (PTI) India reached 51 for one at stumps after Ekansh Singh's fighting century guided England to 309 on a rain-hit day two of the second Youth Test here on Monday.
At close of play, Ayush Mhatre was batting on 20 alongside Vihaan Malhotra on six, with India U-19 trailing by 258 runs.
Only 28.3 overs were possible on Day 2 after overnight and morning rain caused a delayed start to the proceedings, which was marked by multiple interruptions.
Singh, who resumed on 66 after sharing a crucial 90-run sixth wicket stand with skipper Thomas Rew (59) on the opening day, went on to complete a well-deserved century, hitting 117 off 155 balls.
The Kent all-rounder added 100 runs with number nine James Minto (46) as England crossed the 300-run mark. He had 14 shots to the fence and three maximums during his crucial knock. Minto too blasted a six and cracked six boundaries in his 89-ball innings.
Leg-spinner Naman Pushpak (4/76) broke the partnership by dismissing Minto caught and bowled before removing Alex Green soon after. Singh was the last batter to fall, caught by Rahul Kumar off Malhotra's bowling.
For India, Aditya Rawat (2/64) and RS Ambrish (2/56) took two wickets each, while Henil Patel (1/56) and Malhotra (1/4) picked up one apiece.
Rain interrupted play after tea, allowing only 3.1 overs in the final session before heavens opened up again and stumps were drawn.
Brief scores: England U-19: 309 all out in 81.3 overs (Ekansh Singh 117, Thomas Rew 59; Naman Pushpak 4/76).
India U-19: 51 for 1 in 9 overs (Ayush Mhatre 24 not out, Vihaan Malhotra 6 not out; Alex Green 1/34). PTI ATK PDS PDS

Bumrah benefits massively when theres support at other end, 4th Test slightly beyond India: Trott
New Delhi, Jul 26 (PTI) Former England cricketer Jonathan Trott observed that India pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah benefits massively when there is support at the other end but feels the ongoing fourth Test in Manchester is now "slightly beyond" the visitors. Down 1-2 in the five-match series, India trail England by 186 runs in at the end of Day 3 in the fourth Test. India endured arguably their worst day on the field on Day 3 of the Manchester Test as Joe Root's record-breaking 150 put the hosts in complete command. Despite having Bumrah available for what could be his last Test of the series as it was pre-decided that the right-arm pacer would play three of the five Tests on England tour, the Indian bowlers struggled to break through. "Bumrah's areas were pretty good, and his economy reflects that — he was just a bit unlucky. But the bigger issue is pressure from both ends," JioHotstar expert Trott said. "Bumrah benefits massively when there's support at the other end, and that wasn't the case today (Friday). When you're slightly under par as a bowling unit — like India were — control from both ends becomes crucial," he added. While Trott had some sympathy for the young India captain Shubman Gill on his first assignment as leader, he said the fourth Test is beyond India's control as they have fallen behind by a big margin. "Shubman Gill is on his first trip to England as a batter and has also been thrown into the deep end as captain — carrying immense responsibility," he said. "He fought well across the first three Tests, but this game feels slightly beyond India, considering the challenges and resources. India's bowling was hampered by Akash Deep's unavailability — he picked up 10 wickets in the last Test but missed out due to injury. "Anshul Kamboj came in, but struggled to rise to the demands of Test cricket. One area India could've improved is their bowling combination — seamers bowled nearly 82 overs for just three wickets, while spin got four wickets in just 52 overs. That's something they'll need to reassess," he added. Trott said Root has found a balance in the aggressive Bazball approach and conventional style of batting is working well for the England great. "Joe Root's method is just so solid, you don't see him shift gears dramatically. When Bazball first came in, he experimented a bit — ramping seamers, playing reverse scoops — but he's set that aside now," he said. "He's found a balanced approach, maybe carried over a few elements from that expansive phase, but overall, he sticks to what works best for him." Meanwhile, former batter Sanjay Manjrekar hoped India will not get bogged down under pressure and come out fighting. "India won't be thinking of a draw. They'll be hoping for the sun to be out so they can pile on runs and put pressure back on England. The surface is showing signs of uneven bounce, so it could get tricky," he said.

Not Pant! Ravi Shastri Terms This 25-Year-Old As Indian Cricket's Next Poster Boy
Ravi Shastri has said that Shubman Gill is the next poster boy of Indian cricket, following legends like Tendulkar, Dhoni and Kohli. Former India head coach Ravi Shastri has said that Test captain Shubman Gill is Indian cricket's next poster boy, following the legacy of batting legend Sachin Tendulkar, former captain MS Dhoni and ace batter Virat Kohli, adding that he is 'young, fresh and has the looks'. Speaking on the Stick to Cricket podcast, Shastri not just revealed the massive endorsement earnings of Indian cricketers but identified the next face which might dominate the public imagination. 'Shubman Gill will be the next one. There'll be Yashasvi Jaiswal too. Somehow, they always like start he has had now, with his captaincy and the runs he has made, he will be the pin-up boy for sure," Shastri said. — Stick to Cricket (@StickToCricket) July 25, 2025 ' Earlier in the same episode, Shastri made headlines by revealing how much top Indian players earn off the field. 'They earn a lot through endorsements, for sure… upwards of Rs 100 crores. Someone like Dhoni, Kohli or Tendulkar in his pomp, they would do 15-20 ads a year," Shastri said. 'It is per day. They will give you one day to shoot and then that ad can be played out as many times as needed," Shastri added. What Is Happening In Manchester? Ace England batter Joe Root produced a batting masterclass on way to a milestone 38th century as England exploited a jaded Indian bowling attack to stamp their dominance on the fourth Test in Manchester. At stumps on the third day, England were 544/7, stretching their first innings lead to 186 runs. Root made a sublime 150 off 248 deliveries while the other contributions came from England skipper Ben Stokes (77 batting off 134) and Ollie Pope (71 off 128), a day after the openers put a pedestrian looking Indian attack to sword. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 09:59 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. 'I've Been Carrying That...': Tim David Smashes Records & Windies With Russel's Bat
Last Updated: Tim David's record-breaking 102 off 37 balls has led Australia to a six-wicket win over Windies in the third T20I, securing the series win. Star Australia batter Tim David on Friday smashed a list of records to take his team to a six-wicket win over the Windies in the third T20I of the five-match series at St Kitts. Chasing 215, he smacked a 37-ball 102 to take Australia over the line and an unassailable lead in the five-match T20I series. David broke Josh Inglis' record of the fastest T20I hundred by an Australian, which the latter had registered against Scotland last year, off 43 deliveries. David needed six fewer balls than him to reach his hundred. Before that, David also broke Marcus Stoinis' record of the fastest T20I fifty by an Aussie, which the latter had registered against Sri Lanka in 2022, off 16 balls. David needed one fewer delivery than him to reach his fifty. 'I've spent a lot of time working on power hitting, but now I'm working on my shot selection. I've been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year, and it felt like it was the best time to use it," David said while speaking at the post-match presentation ceremony. 'Was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have a period at home and get my body right. I didn't think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia, so I'm stoked," David added. The star Australian batter struck 50 off 16 deliveries, the fastest by an Aussie man and together with Mitchell Owen delivered the highest Aussie T20I fifth-wicket stand in history, breaking his record with Mitchell Marsh of 97 runs against South Africa in 2023. David's hundred is the third-fastest T20I century against any Test-playing country as well. On the first delivery of the 17th over and the final ball of the game, David blasted a boundary off his Royal Challengers Bengaluru teammate Romario Shepherd to reach 102 and win the game, the Aussies reaching 215/4. The 10th over for the Australians proved crucial as David smashed a boundary off the first delivery and sixes off each of the last four balls by Gudakesh Motie. David's 28-run over lifted the Australians within 95 runs of the goal with 60 deliveries remaining. view comments First Published: July 26, 2025, 09:20 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
