Retro Test Drive: $2 Million Lamborghini Reventón Roadster

Bat wings, girth, jumbo intakes and a screaming 6.5-liter V12: the Murciélago is arguably one of the finest Lamborghinis in history; a peak supercar when launched in 2007. Then they cut the roof off and made what's arguably one of the sexiest bulls in history; looking at pictures was, and still is, enough to make me quiver.
And while recovering from the Murciélago's splendor, Lamborghini dropped its most expensive—and extreme—supercar in 2007, the Reventón: matte paintwork, sharper edges, more grilles, massive rear fans and an instrument cluster that looks like it was taken from an F22 Raptor's parts bin. Stunning? I think bodacious.
Of course, being thrown the keys to such a car, even as an auto journalist, is a rarity. With a price tag north of $2m when new and just 15 Roadsters built, these machines often reside in high-security car caves, and are usually only driven minuscule distances. Therefore, it snapped necks when it appeared at a Scottish Highlands charity 'Race the Runway' event.

The event was a showcase, a mix of varied calibre cars zooming along the closed 2.4km runway at RAF Lossiemouth. The rules were simple: attempt to reach your car's top speed, drag race others, and most importantly, live it up.
'Aye, the roof blew off and smashed the rear louvres when driving from Edinburgh to Lossiemouth last night,' said the owner while I viewed the glorious V12 surrounded by glass shards. "So I covered the car, parked in the hotel car park, with a tarpaulin sheet to protect the interior from the rain'. Google it, you'll find a Reddit photograph.
After expressing my deep-rooted love for Lamborghini, he replied, 'Wanna drive it?' A real-catch 22. Terrified to say yes, but it would've been foolish to say no. So, my inner child answered.
The Reventon's smashed louvre
I clambered past the Reventón's dramatic scissor door, over its large door sills, and down into its fighter jet-like Alcantara-coated cockpit. A large glass canopy, which pulled shut, was the only thing missing, something I'd expect Lamborghini to have included in the Reventón's optional extras list alongside rocket pods and ejector seats.
A strong smell of fuel tickled my nose while heat dissipated through its rear vents, the bull's throbbing heart cooling from a previous 190 mph run.
Being a Lamborghini, it had its oddities. The steering wheel and gauge cluster were offset by two inches, while the climate controls, identical to the Murciélago's, were taken from a Rover 45 hatchback.

'We'll aim for 180-ish mph,' said the owner as we pulled onto the runway alongside a yellow Lamborghini Diablo SV. 'I'll tell you when to back off the throttle." We waited for what felt like a lifetime at the end of the runway. The previous cars, a Porsche 911 Turbo S and Boxster 718, had to clear before we barrelled behind.
Soon enough, the marshals provided a countdown: 3, 2, 1. Shaking like a dog doing the toilet, I planted the throttle. The car hesitated slightly before the revs climbed dramatically. Then, we were off. The jet fighter cluster climbed in a captivating, early digital way, while the V12 symphony bounced off surrounding hills; the E-Gear transmission producing a slight clunk with each cog swapped.
100 mph, 120, 140, 150, 175, 180. My hair, blowing around like that of an Afghan Hound with its head out of a car window. At 183 mph, I backed off through fear that I might actually take off, or end up with a repair bill forcing me to sell everything I own, including my organs, dogs, house and family. With enough runway, however, the Reventón would've easily hit its 205 mph top speed.

The first 'BRAKE' sign soon appeared as we neared the end of the runway. By that point, I was still doing 135 mph, which felt more like 70. A glance at the side mirrors revealed the bat wings that had previously been sucking air into the Reventón's V12 at the run's beginning.
Pulling off the runway, I reduced my speed to the RAF base's 15 mph as we trickled back to the runway's start point, which gave me time to properly adjust to the Lambo's cabin. After prodding a few buttons, the owner revealed that not everything works as it should, this being backed by a failing LED brake light and malfunctioning bat wings throughout the day. 'I'll fix it later', adds the owner.

Most Reventóns won't see their top speed, but instead the back of a cab while sitting in busy traffic surrounded by supercar spotters. If you can find one for sale, you'll own one of the rarest bulls ever made. It's utterly fabulous and a reminder of how wild Lamborghini can be.

Imagine having a supercar that can haul your groceries and family while beating most other cars off the line. That's what the Lamborghini Urus did when it debuted in 2018. When the Performante was unveiled in 2022, it cranked up the Urus's performance even more, and one such 2024 Lamborghini Urus Performante with a mere 775 miles is now available on Exotic Car Trader. The 4.0 L FSI twin-turbo V8 of the regular Urus was upgraded to send 657 hp and 627 lb-ft of torque to all four wheels through an 8-speed automatic transmission. Lamborghini claims a 0-62 mph time of 3.6 seconds and a top speed of 190 mph. Yes, there are paddle shifters. Other performance-oriented changes include retuned suspension, a more rear-biased center differential, fixed-height coil springs, the removal of off-road drive modes, and optional Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tires. Despite sharing components with other go-fast SUVs like the Bentley Bentayga, Audi Q7, and Porsche Cayenne, the Urus is the fastest production SUV in the world. That's not a title that just anyone can be proud of achieving. All that power needs an equally impressive setup to slow it down, and Lamborghini did just that by developing what was the world's largest set of carbon ceramic disc brakes at the time. This bull sports 17.32 in discs in the front and 14.57 in discs in the rear using ten-piston calipers at the front and single-piston calipers at the rear. This particular example is finished in Giallo Auge over a contrasting Nero Cosmus interior and sits on gorgeous multi-spoke 23" Pelope wheels. Other special touches include a panoramic roof, a full exterior carbon fiber package for that racey, lightweight look, and even an acoustic treatment for the glass. While that keeps the outside noise of the populace from creeping into your cabin, we hope the roar of that twin-turbo V8 can still make its way to your ears. The regular tech features you've come to expect from modern cars are, of course, present, including a digital gauge cluster, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a premium sound system, and the Park Assistance Package. Now the Lamborghini Urus's main duty is going fast and looking good while doing it, but like I mentioned, it still has more cargo space than your Murcielago would. It's an SUV, after all, just don't expect it to be as cavernous as a regular run-of-the-mill SUV. The rear of the Urus can haul nearly 22 cu ft of cargo, or 56.4 cu ft if the rear seats are folded down. Speaking of those rear seats, they could be configured from the factory as either a three-person bench or two-person sport seats, further adding to the practicality. The Lamborghini Urus by itself is an impressive beast from the Italian marque known for consistently producing raging bulls, but the Performante is an entirely different story altogether. Being able to reach nearly 200 mph after a Costco run isn't a feat that many cars can boast about, but the Urus Performante does it without breaking a sweat. This example on Exotic Car Trader isn't just a regular Urus Performante either, though, with its extremely low mileage, full carbon fiber package, and acoustic glass treatment. All things considered, the $296,500 asking price seems fairly reasonable, and with its bright yellow color and flashy wheels, you'll certainly stand out in the sea of monochrome SUVs. Corvette silenced in Europe — at least at start

General Motors' big, brash Corvette has been silenced in Europe for the first time — at least up to the first 70 kph (44 mph). The Chevrolet Corvette E-Ray hybrid launched in Europe with a 'stealth' mode that allows it to start on electric power for silent getaways. 'It's good for neighbor relations when you leave early in the morning,' GM Europe President Pere Brugal said at the supercar's launch at the Goodwood Festival of Speed on July 10. The new model adds a 162-hp electric motor on the front axle mated to a 1.9-kilowatt-hour battery to create the first all-wheel-drive Corvette. Overall power is 644 hp and the 0 to 100 kph time is 2.9 seconds, making the E-Ray the quickest production Corvette available in Europe. The price in the U.K. is £153,440 ($206,000) for the coupe variant, undercutting the Z06 but far above the standard V-8 model at £92,890. Both coupe and convertible versions of the E-Ray will be sold across Chevrolet's 18 European markets. The hybrid technology gives the U.S. automaker an answer to the increasing number of electrified supercars from European rivals. 'We think the timing is perfect,' Brugal said. 'The hybrid supercar market is experiencing huge growth.' Half of the models sold in Europe's exotic segment were plug-in hybrids in the first six months of the year, marking 49 percent growth for PHEVs, preliminary figures from market researcher Dataforce show. Some were SUVs, topped by the BMW XM, but electrified supercars also include the segment's No. 4 seller, the Ferrari 296 GTS, as well as the Ferrari SF90, Lamborghini Revuelto and McLaren Artura. Lamborghini's new Temerario, a replacement for the Huracan, will also be a PHEV. The E-Ray is a hybrid rather than a PHEV, but the model will also compete with the new Porsche 911 GTS T-Hybrid. Like the E-Ray, the 911 hybrid will have a 1.9-kWh battery pack. The Corvette was GM's bestselling car in Europe in the first half of the year, with volume of 338 — 39 sales ahead of the Cadillac Lyriq full-electric SUV, according to Dataforce figures. No other models have so far been offered by Cadillac in its launch markets of France, Germany, Switzerland and Sweden. More markets and models are coming, but Cadillac is in no rush to announce them. 'We're not here to push metal,' Brugal said. GM returned to Europe in 2024 with Cadillac after exiting the market in 2017 with the sale of its Opel and Vauxhall subsidiaries to PSA Group. Opel and Vauxhall are now part of Stellantis. Premium rivals to BMW, Audi and Mercedes-Benz — along with JLR and Volvo — have found it difficult to gain traction in Europe, but Brugal insists that customers will be lured to Cadillac by the combination of design, brand awareness and technology. Cadillac has yet to offer its Super Cruise hands-off, eyes-on semi-autonomous driving system in Europe, but that will change next year, Brugal said. GM has a fleet of vehicles testing Super Cruise on Europe's major highways with the aim of following Ford, which already offers its similar BlueCruise system in certain models, including the Mustang Mach-E full-electric SUV. Last year, Ford said it won permission to offer BlueCruise in 15 European Union countries over 133,000 kilometers (82,744 miles) of Blue Zones.

Lamborghini's First EV Might Be Dead On Arrival

Back in December, Lamborghini announced that it would delay its first EV , based on the Lanzador concept first shown in 2023. The car, originally set to launch in 2028, was pushed back to 2029 amid softening demand for high-end electric cars. Now, we're hearing from CEO Stephan Winkelmann that the car might not be an EV at all. "We took two decisions so far based on the fact that the acceptance curve of the electric cars worldwide and globally, not only in our type of segment, is flattening, and this is even more true for our type [of cars]," Winkelmann told Australian publication CarExpert . "The first decision is that Urus replacement would be, again, a plug-in hybrid, and that we postpone the launch of the fourth [model]," he said. In addition to delaying the EV, Lamborghini recently walked back plans to make the next-generation Urus SUV an EV, instead saying it would now be a plug-in hybrid. When asked whether Lamborghini would consider a plug-in powertrain for the production Lanzador, Winkelmann didn't dismiss the idea. "We have to decide whether we go one way or the other very soon, but today is still… it's possible [that it is a plug-in hybrid], but it's something which is still very open," he said. This stance is a strong departure from just a few years ago, when Lamborghini seemed determined to release an electric car to add to its portfolio of series production vehicles. The company has been steadfast in hybridizing its lineup, first with the flagship Revuelto , before introducing the Urus SE hybrid . This year saw the launch of the Temerario , rounding out the company's portfolio. Lamborghini Lanzador Concept As for when the EV will arrive, Winkelmann stresses that the right timing is everything. "Again, we said we don't need to be there at the beginning, but we need to be there when the people are ready to buy these things," he told CarExpert . "And for me, this is paramount for the success of a company like ours. "We are a technology-driven company, but about certain things, you have always to look into the emotional side of the people which it is surrounding, and the second buyer for sure… because performance is driven not by just acceleration or top speed, but by emotion." Of course, Lamborghini remains committed to internal combustion for as long as it'll be allowed. The company plans to rely on pathways such as e-fuels to make that happen. "If sustainable fuels are coming, then this is a huge opportunity to keep internal combustion engines," Winkelmann said. "Besides that, for sure, the headline should be, we will keep them as long as possible, at least for the two supercars."
