If Pakistan is enemy, then why this game: Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Asia Cup fixture
Vijay Wadettiwar
questioned the government's handling of
Operation Sindoor
and India's decision to play Pakistan in the
Asia Cup 2025
on Sunday.
He lashed out at the BJP-led central government for its inconsistent actions, particularly in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, followed by Operation Sindoor outreach, involving seven all-party parliamentary delegations visiting 25 countries to convey India's stance on terrorism and counter Pakistan's narrative.

Vijay Wadettiwar said, "Why was this drama done? Why was Operation Sindoor conducted? From where did the terrorists come? Why were they not found after that? By which route did they come, and which route did they go? And when the truth came out that the terrorists were not caught... They sent their delegations to many countries. Now, if Pakistan is our enemy, then why this (Asia Cup match with Pakistan) game?"
Led by senior MPs from various parties, including Shashi Tharoor, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Supriya Sule, and Baijayant Panda, the Indian delegates met with senior officials, parliamentarians, and government representatives to discuss counter-terrorism strategies and reaffirm commitments.
Live Events
The delegations emphasised India's zero-tolerance policy towards terrorism and sought cooperation from the visited countries. The outreach received positive responses from some countries, with officials expressing solidarity with India's fight against terrorism.
Vijay Wadettiwar alleged, "They think something and do something else. This has been their politics... By sending delegations, they have misled the people of the country..."
The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to take place in the UAE, with the tournament featuring top Asian teams, including India and Pakistan. The decision to hold the tournament in a neutral country was made due to the tense relations between the two nations.
The Men's Asia Cup 2025 will be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28,
ACC
President and PCB Chairman
Mohsin Naqvi
confirmed, according to ESPNcricinfo.
The tournament will follow the T20I format and feature eight teams -- the five full members of the Asian Cricket Council (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka), along with the UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong.
The tournament opener is placed between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9. India will kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for the 14th.
India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. The final is scheduled on September 28.
India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are in Group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in Group B.
Earlier in the day, Congress leader Pawan Khera took a jibe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the fixture announcement, asking whether the "boycott gang" will boycott the Home Minister or enjoy the match.
"On Kargil Day, the date for the India-Pakistan cricket match has been announced. A few days ago, the Home Minister stated that bombs and talks cannot go together. But cricket can go on because it's managed by his son. Will the boycott gang now boycott the Home Minister or enjoy the match?" Khera posed on X.
Speaking on the issue, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned the BCCI for allowing a match between India and Pakistan, saying that it would be a failure of the government if the match were held.
"If this match happens then it is not just the failure of the government, it is also the failure of BCCI that on one hand, we remember our armed forces and pay tribute to those who died fighting for the country on
Kargil Diwas
, and the same day, the Interior Minister of Pakistan, who is the president of PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board), announces that Asia Cup is going to be held in UAE," she said.
The political tensions continue to cast a shadow over sporting engagements between India and Pakistan, with bilateral series being suspended for years.

Lahar Singh alleges organised campaign by Congress against constitutional bodies like ECI and SC
Taking exception to Congress MLC B.K. Hariprasad's observations against the Supreme Court and other courts, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Lahar Singh Siroya has accused the Congress of taking up an organised propaganda under Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi against Constitutional institutions like Election Commission of India and Supreme Court. In a social media post, Mr. Singh said, 'It is unfortunate that Mr. Hariprasad has cast aspersions on the Supreme Court of India after it warned Mr. Rahul Gandhi for his remarks on the Indian army, on Monday.' Recalling Mr. Hariprasad's remarks, he said, 'In his Kannada X post, Mr. Hariprasad has said that the Supreme Court's remarks on Rahul Gandhi is indicative not just of the falling standards of the court, but is also of its support to dictatorial attitude.' Mr. Hariprasad also says that the court has disrespected a person who is recognised by our Constitution as shadow prime minister. How can someone who holds a constitutional post disrespect another person who holds a constitutional post, he says targeting the judge. At the end, he shockingly says the Supreme Court and some High Courts are making politically inspired observations and judgements in recent times.' 'Whether Mr. Hariprasad's comments constitute contempt of court is not for me to decide. But as a politician I recognise a very organised propaganda of the Congress party under Mr. Rahul Gandhi which is trying to assault institutions like the Election Commission of India and the Supreme Court of India. To save their party they want to spread lies and anarchy,' Mr. Singh alleged.

Take Operation Sindoor like action to safeguard dignity of women in digital space, Madras High Court tells Centre
The Ministry of Electronics and Information Technology (MeitY) must exhibit same interest, as it did in blocking over 1,400 Uniform Resource Locators (URLs) during Operation Sindoor, when it comes to blocking websites that display private images/videos of women, the Madras High Court said on Tuesday (August 5, 2025). Justice N. Anand Venkatesh agreed with senior counsel Abudu Kumar Rajaratnam, representing a woman lawyer whose private images/videos were all over the internet/digital media, that the dignity of every woman in the country must be considered as important as the dignity of the whole nation put together. The woman advocate had filed a writ petition in the High Court seeking a direction to MeitY to block the porn websites and other digital platforms on which her private videos as well as images had been displayed after they were leaked by her former boyfriend in the social media. Mr. Rajaratnam said, though the court, during the previous hearing, had ordered blocking of as many as six video links; the number of links in which his client's images/videos were displayed had now increased to 13 and some of the websites had resurfaced even after blocking. On his part, central government senior panel counsel A. Kumaraguru told the court that MeitY had taken serious note of the orders passed by the court on the issue and decided to formulate a Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) for redressing grievances of women facing trouble in the digital space. He said, it had been proposed to constitute an expert committee for formulating the SOP and that the terms of reference of the committee had also been laid down. He said, MeitY had blocked all the 13 video links which the senior counsel had shared with him and that they could not be accessed from Delhi and Mumbai. However, those links were accessible in Tamil Nadu alone and it appeared to be a coordination issue with the local service providers, the panel counsel said and assured the court that the expert committee would study these technical issues too before formulating the SOP and submitting it before the court. On his part, Mr. Rajaratnam brought it to the notice of the court that during Operation Sindoor, the Centre had observed that certain social media handles, including many operating from outside India, were actively propagating false and potentially harmful information. Hence, the government had issued orders, under the Section 69A of the Information Technology Act 2000, for blocking all websites, social media handles and posts that were found to be against the interests of sovereignty and integrity of the country, security of the State as well as maintenance of public order. Then, MeitY issued directions for blocking over 1,400 URLs whose content was found to be anti-India, false, misleading and communally sensitive. Most of those digital content had emerged from Pakistan based social media accounts and yet, the Centre successfully blocked them, Mr. Rajaratnam said. He said, it was expected of the Centre to exhibit the same intensity of seriousness when a woman approaches the Ministry with a complaint that her private videos/images were being circulated in the internet and ensure the offending websites do not resurface even after blocking.

‘Fueling the war machine': Trump threatens hike in tariffs on India in next 24 hours
US President Donald Trump on Tuesday warned that he would 'very substantially' raise tariffs on imports from India within the next 24 hours, citing New Delhi's continued purchase of Russian oil, a day after he announced on Truth Social that he would be hiking duties on India. 'They're fueling the war machine, and if they're going to do that, then I'm not going to be happy,' Trump told CNBC in an interview. He added that India's high tariff rates on American goods remained a key sticking point in bilateral trade relations. However, Trump did not specify the new tariff rate he intends to impose on Indian imports. On July 31, ahead of the August 1 deadline, Trump said he would slap at 25 per cent tariff plus an unspecified 'penalty' on India for trading with Russia.
