If Pakistan is enemy, then why this game: Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar on Asia Cup fixture

Nagpur: Congress leader Vijay Wadettiwar questioned the government's handling of Operation Sindoor and India's decision to play Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2025 on Sunday. He lashed out at the BJP-led central government for its inconsistent actions, particularly in light of the recent terror attack in Pahalgam, followed by Operation Sindoor outreach, involving seven all-party parliamentary delegations visiting 25 countries to convey India's stance on terrorism and counter Pakistan's narrative. Why was Operation Sindoor conducted? From where did the terrorists come? Why were they not found after that? By which route did they come, and which route did they go? And when the truth came out that the terrorists were not caught... They sent their delegations to many countries. Now, if Pakistan is our enemy, then why this (Asia Cup match with Pakistan) game?" Led by senior MPs from various parties, including Shashi Tharoor, Ravi Shankar Prasad, Supriya Sule, and Baijayant Panda, the Indian delegates met with senior officials, parliamentarians, and government representatives to discuss counter-terrorism strategies and reaffirm commitments. The outreach received positive responses from some countries, with officials expressing solidarity with India's fight against terrorism. Vijay Wadettiwar alleged, "They think something and do something else. This has been their politics... By sending delegations, they have misled the people of the country..." The Asia Cup 2025 is scheduled to take place in the UAE, with the tournament featuring top Asian teams, including India and Pakistan. The decision to hold the tournament in a neutral country was made due to the tense relations between the two nations. The Men's Asia Cup 2025 will be held in the United Arab Emirates from September 9 to 28, ACC President and PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi confirmed, according to ESPNcricinfo. The tournament will follow the T20I format and feature eight teams -- the five full members of the Asian Cricket Council (Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka), along with the UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. The tournament opener is placed between Afghanistan and Hong Kong on September 9. India will kick off their campaign against UAE on September 10, while the high-voltage game against Pakistan is scheduled for the 14th. India will play their final group stage fixture against Oman on September 19. After the group stage, the tournament will proceed to the Super 4, where the top two teams from each group will qualify. The final is scheduled on September 28. India, Pakistan, UAE and Oman are in Group A, while Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Hong Kong are in Group B. Earlier in the day, Congress leader Pawan Khera took a jibe at Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the fixture announcement, asking whether the "boycott gang" will boycott the Home Minister or enjoy the match. "On Kargil Day, the date for the India-Pakistan cricket match has been announced. A few days ago, the Home Minister stated that bombs and talks cannot go together. But cricket can go on because it's managed by his son. Will the boycott gang now boycott the Home Minister or enjoy the match?" Khera posed on X. Speaking on the issue, Shiv Sena (UBT) MP Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned the BCCI for allowing a match between India and Pakistan, saying that it would be a failure of the government if the match were held. "If this match happens then it is not just the failure of the government, it is also the failure of BCCI that on one hand, we remember our armed forces and pay tribute to those who died fighting for the country on Kargil Diwas , and the same day, the Interior Minister of Pakistan, who is the president of PCB (Pakistan Cricket Board), announces that Asia Cup is going to be held in UAE," she said. The political tensions continue to cast a shadow over sporting engagements between India and Pakistan, with bilateral series being suspended for years.

Marathi vs Hindi row a 'trap' by Fadnavis to unite Hindi voters for BMC polls: Congress

Live Events (You can now subscribe to our (You can now subscribe to our Economic Times WhatsApp channel Mumbai: The ongoing heat over the Marathi-versus-Hindi issue is a "trap" laid by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to help the Bharatiya Janata Party return to power in the Mumbai civic polls , a senior Congress leader has claimed. Vijay Wadettiwar , a senior Congress leader, on Saturday hinted that political parties like the Uddhav Balasaheb Thackeray Sena had fallen into the "trap" after they protested the state government's move to introduce Hindi as a subject for primary students."We are not against Hindi, we have also learned Hindi from the fifth standard, though we agree it should not be introduced from the first standard. However, the politics behind this (introducing Hindi) is different. Today the BJP has managed to create a big voter base of Hindi-speaking people in Mumbai," said added, "The Marathi population is not more than 35 to 40 per cent and if you remove the minority population, then we have around 42 per cent Hindi-speaking population. By bringing out this issue, the Hindi-speaking people have been brought together by Fadnavis. He has been successful in it."Without naming the UBT Sena or Raj Thackeray's Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), Wadettiwar said these parties would struggle to gain much in the Mumbai civic polls on the language issue compared to the BJP.

Minister vows stricter law against people cheating farmers

1 2 3 Pune: Opposition targeted the state govt on the last day of the monsoon session over bogus seeds and fertilisers being sold to farmers and claimed that its action against the fraudsters was not effective, while agriculture minister Manikrao Kokate vowed to bring some stricter law to punish the unscrupulous people. Congress MLA Vijay Wadettiwar said, "It is quite a serious issue happening across the state. Even MLAs from Mahayuti have expressed concern over it. The state has responded to the problem by appointing flying squads, but it will not address this kind of issue. The state govt will have to take some serious steps." Calling for stricter laws to punish people involved in such crime, he said, "The farmer spends his hard-earned money to purchase seeds and fertilisers. S/he works hard to grow crops, but all efforts go in vain because of bogus seeds and fertilisers. We demand the govt to come up with stricter laws like MPID to award serious punishment to such fraudsters." Congress notice to MLA over ‘silence' in Assembly

Maharashtra Congress has issued a notice to its MLA and legislative party leader Vijay Wadettiwar, inquiring why he and other party MLAs did not speak up against the public security bill when it was approved in the Assembly. The party has issued a note to its legislators directing them to argue against the bill; however, not only Congress MLAs, but Shiv Sena (UBT) and NCP SP legislators, too, preferred to remain silent in the House. CPI(M) MLA Vinod Nikole was the only person in the 288-member Assembly who raised his hand against the bill and asked the speaker to note his voice as dissent. BJP assigns issues to leaders to comment on The BJP, known for its 'micro-planning', is doing the same in Maharashtra with an aim to expand its voter base and garner ideological support. The party has allocated specific issues to its leaders, directing, when the need arises to make a comment before the media over the issue, only the leader assigned to the matter should speak. As part of the excercise, minister Nitesh Rane and MLA Gopichand Padalkar have been reportedly assigned to speak on communal issues with an agenda to consolidate the BJP's Hindu vote bank, while MLA Atul Bhatkalkar has been asked to target the Pawars and Thackerays. MLC Chitra Wagh and others have been tasked to defend CM Fadnavis when he is targetted.
