1,000 students to receive Sabah State Scholarship
KOTA KINABALU (July 20): The Sabah State Government continues to intensify its efforts in providing quality education through a wide range of ongoing and sustainable initiatives.
The Sabah State Scholarship Award of Excellence (ABCNS), the Sabah State Government Scholarship (BKNS) and the Sabah Islamic Religious Council Excellence Award for exceptional Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM), Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Sijil Tinggi Agama Malaysia (STAM) students, respectively, are among the State Government's initiatives, representing the pinnacle of academic recognition in the State.
This year, the 36th Sabah State Scholarship Award of Excellence Ceremony is jointly organised by the Yayasan Sabah Group, the Sabah State Public Service Department (JPANS), and the Sabah Islamic Religious Council (MUIS) as part of a collaborative effort to broaden recognition for outstanding students from various academic streams.
This prestigious event will celebrate 40 high-achieving SPM students who will receive ABCNS through the Yayasan Sabah Group.
Additionally, 50 STPM students and 10 students pursuing their studies overseas will be awarded BKNS through JPANS, while 17 STAM students will receive the Sabah Islamic Religious Council Excellence Award in recognition of their outstanding academic achievements.
This ceremony will be graced by the Chief Minister cum Chairman of the Yayasan Sabah Board of Trustees, Datuk Seri Panglima Haji Hajiji bin Haji Noor, on July 21 at the Sabah International Convention Centre (SICC).
In a statement, the director of Yayasan Sabah, Dato' Sri Haji Gulamhaidar @ Yusof bin Khan Bahadar, said, 'The award is not merely an academic accolade, it is a strategic investment in Sabah's future. Through this initiative, we aim to cultivate a generation of young leaders who are not only academically distinguished but also competitive, leadership-driven, and ready to advance the State's progress.'
The initiative by the Sabah State Government, through the Yayasan Sabah Group, JPANS and MUIS, aims to inspire and motivate top-tier students to achieve excellence across all disciplines consistently.
'We acknowledge that the next generation represents the nation's greatest asset. Sabah's future depends on our ability to mould young people who are not only knowledgeable and resilient, but also guided by strong values. Therefore, to sustain the progress and prosperity we enjoy today, we must channel our efforts towards equipping them with the knowledge and skills essential for creating a balanced future generation,' he stated.
A total of 1,000 students from schools within the Kota Kinabalu area will participate in the event, serving as a source of inspiration and sparking their motivation to strive for academic excellence.
'To all the award recipients, may your excellence continue to shine indefinitely. Let these achievements inspire humility rather than complacency. While we have celebrated many successes, it is crucial to remember that past victories do not guarantee future triumphs. We must remain diligent and proactive to ensure continued success,' he added.
As a cornerstone of Sabah's development, educational initiatives such as these should be further strengthened and broadened in scope by the Sabah State Government through the Yayasan Sabah Group, JPANS, and MUIS to advance the State's progress, with a firm emphasis on advancing educational excellence.

Xaverian spirit soars as illustrious alumni meet at PJ reunion
Some of the old boys and girls of SXI who turned up at the high-tea gathering held in Petaling Jaya. THE Xaverian spirit was riding high during a get-together in Petaling Jaya attended by many old boys and girls of St Xavier's Institution (SXI) of Penang. The gathering was organised by the Xaverian Club of Kuala Lumpur (XCKL) which caters mainly for the alumni who reside in Kuala Lumpur and Selangor. Besides the annual dinner, XCKL holds regular events to ensure the ex-students stay in touch and share their latest experiences through life's journey. There are no formalities when the gatherings are held, with many of the alumni having had long and illustrious careers, both in the public and private sectors. The most recent get-together, held at a hotel in Petaling Jaya, saw the likes of ex-Kuala Lumpur mayor Tan Sri Kamaruzzaman Shariff, ex-Bank Rakyat chairman Emeritus Prof Tan Sri Dr Syed Jalaluddin Syed Salim, ex-OCBC Bank (Malaysia) board chairman Datuk Ooi Sang Kuang, former arts, culture and heritage deputy minister Datuk Wong Kam Hoong, former senior executive in the telecommunications industry CY Chin, CH Williams, Talhar and Wong ex-managing director Datuk John Loh Soong Chew and 1967 Thomas Cup winning squad member Datuk Yew Cheng Hoe attending. Also at the merry event were XCKL president Kevin Yew Chia Ein, and past presidents Ho Chee Kit, Jason Ong, Lim Hock Thiam, Anthony Chuah and Tan Kar Aun. Ong, who was from the Class of 1969, said he was touched to see so many personalities setting aside time to meet up with old schoolmates and club members. 'I was determined to be a part of this reunion, and I would like to say a big thank you to all who made the effort. 'Some, despite their advancing age, remained strong in spirit and will, which is the hallmark of Xaverians. 'They certainly matched words with deeds,' added Ong, who came with his brother-in-law Tan Hun Peng, who is also an SXI old boy. XCKL was registered in 1986 by ex-students residing in the Klang Valley. Its objectives are to promote the Xaverian ideal of brotherhood, forge close links with their alma mater and maintain an interest in its advancement, promote fellowship among the alumni and cultivate closer links with other Lasallian chapters under the banner of the Malaysian Federation of Lasallian Alumni Associations.

RM500 aid disbursed to UiTM Sabah students under PTPTN scheme
KOTA KINABALU: A total of 159 needy students of Universiti Teknologi Mara (UiTM) Sabah received one-off financial aid of RM500 each to ease their financial burden. Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abdul Kadir (pic) said the RM79,500 allocation was disbursed under the ministry's PTPTN Madani Education Assistance Programme. 'This initiative is to ensure that all eligible students have access to quality education regardless of financial background, in line with the ministry and PTPTN's commitment to enhancing higher education in the country. 'The aid reflects our concern for students needing financial support to pursue their dreams,' he said during the presentation ceremony held at the university yesterday, Bernama reported. Zambry said the financial aid was contributed by various parties through PTPTN. He also urged parents to open National Education Savings Scheme (SSPN) accounts for their children's future education needs. 'Parents can open an account as soon as the child is born and start saving gradually. Over time, the amount will grow and can later be used to fund higher education,' he said. PTPTN, in a statement issued following the event, said that since the education assistance programme's introduction in 2022, a total of RM981,000 had been disbursed to benefit 1,962 students across 16 public universities.
