NFL to honor league's best offensive lineman with Protector of the Year award

Yahoo21-05-2025

Amid a flurry of announcements and rules decisions from the NFL owners meetings in Minneapolis comes a new award.
NFL executive vice president of football operations Troy Vincent announced on Wednesday that the NFL will issue the Protector of the Year award at the end of each season to honor the NFL's best offensive lineman.

Vincent credited Buffalo Bills Pro Bowl guard Dion Dawkins and retired Los Angeles Rams All-Pro tackle Andrew Whitworth for helping facilitate the award. A panel of retired offensive linemen including Whitworth will determine the winner.
"I'm going to give credit to Dion Dawkins from Buffalo," Vincent said, per NFL Network. "He was truly instrumental, him and Andrew Whitworth, of just making sure that we recognize the big fellas.
"LeCharles Bentley, Jason Kelce, Shaun O'Hara, Orlando Pace, Will Shields and Andrew Whitworth will be the panel. ... They've come up with a criteria on skills, metrics, impact, leadership, durability and strength of the opponent. We'll be tracking that quarterly with this group."

Dawkins and Whitworth both praised the decision on social media, with Whitworth declaring that it "means everything to the big guys up front."
"It's time the men who lead, protect, and never ask for credit are recognized as the backbone of this game!" Whitworth wrote.
The award will be issued alongside other individual awards including MVP, Offensive and Defensive Player of the Year and Rookies of the Year on both sides of the ball. It will be the only position-specific award handed out by the NFL for an off-ball position that doesn't garner consideration for any of the other awards.

Arizona Cardinals named one of NFL's most interesting teams in 2025

Bleacher Report named the eight most interesting teams in the NFL. See where the Cardinals are ranked. The Arizona Cardinals want to be relevant in 2025. They led the NFL West last season after 10 weeks but lost five of their final seven games. They made big moves on defense in the offseason. Now they hope to get over the hump and make the postseason. It should make for an interesting season, and Bleacher report agrees. Naming the eight most interesting teams in the NFL entering this season, the Cardinals come in at No. 5. Arizona Cardinals 5th most interesting team in 2025 The Cardinals doubled their win total from four in 2023 to eight in 2024 before continuing their rebuild with the addition of several potential immediate-impact defenders, including key draft picks Walter Nolen III and Will Johnson. Meanwhile, on offense, they're praying that veteran quarterback Kyler Murray stays healthy and takes another big step forward with shiny sophomore receiver Marvin Harrison Jr. and revelation tight end Trey McBride. This team would still likely have its work cut out for it in tougher divisions, but the 49ers are dealing with substantial losses after a disastrous season and the Rams and Seahawks are fringe contenders at best. Arizona could easily be positioned to make a surprise run at the NFC West crown and could even be a potential playoff spoiler. And at the very least, I'd expect to see plenty of fireworks in Cards games in 2025. Here's how I see it. They were a "good" bad team in 2023 and won four games. They were the definition of mediocre last season, losing to playoff teams and beating almost everyone they faced who didn't make the postseason. They won eight games and had a bad defense and pretty good offense, albeit inconsistent. Their talent on defense is significantly better and the offense should continue to be good. If the defense is better (it will be), they will win more games. And they could have made the playoffs last year. The Cardinals will certainly be an interesting team to watch in 2025. Arizona Cardinals to face 3 of NFL's best aging veteran players in 2025

PFF named 10 outstanding aging veteran players in the NFL. The Cardinals have one and face three of them in 2025. It is said that the NFL is a young man's game. It is a league where players in their 20s thrive and few last long into their 30s. The Arizona Cardinals spent the last two seasons actively getting younger. But there are exceptions. PFF featured 10 aging veterans who are still playing at a high level. The NFC West has three of these 10 players and one other is one of the Cardinals' non-division opponents in 2025. DL Calais Campbell, Arizona Cardinals We focused on Campbell individually in another story. He will be 39 and enters his 18th season. Even in his late 30s, he has had three consecutive seasons with at least five sacks and has 14 such seasons in his career. He seems on track for the Hall of Fame despite never at any point in his career being widely considered one of the very best at his position. QB Matthew Stafford, L.A. Rams Stafford is 37 years old and his Rams squad is a potential sleeper to go all the way. If he manages to get another title, it will be hard to keep him out of the Hall of Fame. Oh, and he has really been good against the Cardinals over the last decade. He is 7-2-1 in the regular season in his last 10 regular-season starts against the Cardinals, dating back to 2017, and he beat them in the playoffs en route to his title. LT Trent Williams, San Francisco 49ers Williams will turn 37 in July. He is still arguably the best tackle in the league. He dominates against the Cardinals. He made 11 straight Pro Bowls but missed last year, as he played in only 10 games. He was an All-Pro in the three seasons prior to 2024. G Kevin Zeitler, Tennessee Titans The Cardinals host the Titans in Week 5 this coming season. He is 35, and while he has only been a Pro Bowler once in his career, he has been one of the most reliable guards for years. Arizona Cardinals DL Calais Campbell one of 10 outstanding late-career veterans in NFL

Few players have played as well for as long as Calais Campbell. It is said that the NFL is a young man's game. It is a league where players in their 20s thrive and few last long into their 30s. The Arizona Cardinals spent the last two seasons actively getting younger. But there are exceptions. PFF featured 10 aging veterans who are still playing at a high level. The Cardinals have one of those players — defensive line Calais Campbell. Aside from quarterbacks Aaron Rodgers and Joe Flacco, Calais Campbell (who turns 39 years old in September) is the oldest active player in the NFL. The Dolphins were one of the league's biggest disappointments last year, starting the season 2-6, but Campbell still played in all 17 games, ranking first among interior defenders with an 85.9 PFF run-defense grade. Campbell signed with the Arizona Cardinals in free agency and will finish out his Hall-of-Fame career back where it started in 2008. His leadership will be valuable for an improving defensive line, most notably 16th-overall pick Walter Nolen. When Campbell left the Cardinals in 2017, he was a solid player. No one had the Hall of Fame connected to him. He had a couple of great years in Jacksonville and has steadily produced for almost two decades. At no point in his career has he been considered one of the top four or five defensive linemen in the NFL. But with 14 seasons with at least five sacks, he now has 110.5 for his career. He has talked a lot about leadership and mentoring this offseason, but there is no mistaking the fact that he can still play.
