Oman joins world in celebrating International Day for Cultural Diversity on Wednesday
Muscat: The Sultanate of Oman will join nations worldwide tomorrow in celebrating the World Day for Cultural Diversity for Dialogue and Development, observed annually on 21 May.
The occasion aims to highlight the richness of global cultures and emphasize the vital role of intercultural dialogue in fostering peace and sustainable development.
Marking the event, the Oman National Commission for Education, Culture, and Science, in collaboration with the working team of the International Fund for Cultural Diversity (IFCD) in Oman and the Arab League Educational, Cultural, and Scientific Organization (ALECSO), will organize a workshop on May 27-28.
The session will focus on mechanisms for preparing cultural projects to secure support from the IFCD.
Cultural diversity, as defined by the UNESCO Convention on the Protection and Promotion of the Diversity of Cultural Expressions (2005), refers to "the manifold ways in which the cultures of groups and societies find expression, passed on within and among groups and communities."
Oman joined the convention in 2007, which seeks to promote diverse forms of cultural expression, create conditions for cultures to flourish and interact, encourage intercultural dialogue, strengthen cultural exchange among peoples, and foster respect for cultural diversity at local and global levels.
In this context, Oman formed a working team for the IFCD, comprising members from various cultural institutions. The team is tasked with identifying and analyzing cultural diversity initiatives, establishing a unified framework for related projects and programs, reviewing and approving proposals for IFCD funding, and preparing reports on the implementation of the UNESCO convention.
This year's celebration coincides with UNESCO's commemoration of the 20th anniversary of the convention's adoption in 2005. The event seeks to raise awareness of the convention's key achievements and engage policymakers in addressing challenges and opportunities to safeguard and promote cultural diversity.

At HM's behest, Shura Council to conclude its second ordinary session of 10th term on 13 July
Muscat: At the behest of His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik, the Shura Council will adjourn its second ordinary session (2024-2025) of the tenth term (2023-2027) on Sunday, 13 July, in implementation of Article 41 of the Council of Oman Law. Sheikh Ahmed Mohammed Al Nadabi, Secretary-General of the Shura Council, stated: 'The Council has witnessed extensive legislative activity in the first half of the tenth term (2023-2027) during its first and second sessions, translating the requirements of strengthening the legislative framework supporting the implementation of Oman Vision 2040. This aligns with its constitutional roles defined by the Basic Law of the State and the Council of Oman Law, reflected in the Council's legislative and oversight work across various sectors." He emphasised that the Council diligently carried out its duties during the second ordinary session, closely monitoring national developments, particularly as Oman began evaluating the achievements of its Tenth Five-Year Plan and outlining the eleventh. These developments were tracked through the Council's bureau and standing committees, which provided insights and recommendations to enhance national plans and visions. Al Nadabi noted that legislative activity peaked during the tenth term, with the Council reviewing 39 draft laws and agreements referred by the government across its first and second sessions. This included revising legislation, proposing new laws, and amending existing ones to meet the demands of Oman's renewed renaissance and contribute to national progress. Additionally, Council members actively employed oversight tools, with over 300 monitoring instruments submitted during the two sessions, alongside meetings aimed at strengthening integration and dialogue between the Council, the government, state institutions, and citizens. The second ordinary session saw significant legislative work, with 21 government-referred projects (14 draft laws and 7 agreements) and 3 legislative proposals initiated by the Council. The session included 14 regular meetings, four of which were dedicated to discussing ministerial statements from services sector ministers, addressing challenges in implementing development plans.

Chairman of Academy for Strategic, Defence Studies inspects 'Decision-Making 12' exercise
Muscat: Maj. Gen Hamed Ahmed Sakroon, Chairman of the Academy for Strategic and Defence Studies today inspected the progress and activities of the annual strategic exercise 'Decision-Making 12'. The Chairman and several senior officers were briefed about the exercise. The participants gave an explanatory presentation about the exercise and how it interacts with international issues and various national scenarios. HM the Sultan condoles Emir of Kuwait
Muscat: His Majesty Sultan Haitham bin Tarik has sent a cable of condolences to Sheikh Mishal Al Ahmad Al Jaber Al Sabah, Emir of the State of Kuwait on the death of Sheikh Fahad Sabah Al Nasser Al Mubarak Al Sabah. In the cable, His Majesty the Sultan expressed his sincere sympathies to the Emir and the Al Sabah family. His Majesty also prayed to Allah the Almighty to rest the deceased's soul in peace in paradise and grant his family the fortitude to bear the loss.
