Indian-origin man sentenced to jail, 3 cane strokes for rioting in Singapore

An Indian origin man has been sentenced to two years and three months in jail, and three strokes of the cane, after pleading guilty to a rioting charge in which another man was killed at a nightspot in 2023. Kavind Raj Kannan, 25, and 10 other men -- referred to in court documents as the 'rioting group' -- had ganged up against Mohammad Isrrat Mohd Ismail, then 29, at the Concorde Hotel in the wee hours of August 20, 2023, The Straits Times reported on Monday.
According to court documents, Isrrat died after he was repeatedly stabbed with a knife by Asvain Pachan Pillai Sukumaran, another Indian origin gang member who was part of the rioting group.
Asvain, then 30, has been charged with murder and his case is pending.
Other members of the gang have been dealt with jail terms and caning in court.
Defence lawyers pleaded for Kavind to be given up to two years and two months' jail with caning.
The lawyers said: '(Isrrat) himself began the fracas with vulgarities being hurled at the accused's group."

18 illegal Bangladeshi settlers sent to detention centre in Odisha's Kendrapara
KENDRAPARA: Police on Sunday apprehended 18 suspected Muslim Bangladeshi nationals residing illegally at different places in the coastal district. Two suspected Bangladeshi nationals were rounded up from Rajendranarayanpur and Rangani villages within Talachua Marine police limits. Another 16 illegal immigrants were apprehended from Kereragada and Gopalpur villages in Rajnagar area. These people were caught on basis of sustained ground-level intelligence and they could not produce valid documents to prove their Indian citizenship, said police. 'We suspect that these foreign nationals entered India illegally through unauthorised riverine routes and were residing in coastal pockets of the district without valid documents. All the detainees failed to establish their Indian nationality during interrogation. They have been lodged in a detention centre. Further investigation is underway,' said IIC of Rajnagar police station Naresh Sahoo. All illegal immigrants from Bangladesh and other countries will not be spared. Police have formed a team to identify and apprehend foreign nationals staying illegally in the district without valid documents. The move is necessary for national security, Sahoo added. Earlier on June 9, Chief Minister Mohan Charan Majhi had directed the district administration to take strict legal action against illegal Bangladeshi immigrants during a review meeting at Kendrapara. In March this year, the chief minister had informed the Odisha Assembly that a total of 3,738 Bangladeshi infiltrators were identified in the state. The highest number of 1,649 illegal Bangladeshi immigrants were residing in Kendrapara followed by 1,112 in Jagatsinghpur, 655 in Malkangiri, 199 in Bhadrak, 106 in Nabarangpur and 17 in Bhubaneswar. Notably in 2005, the state government had served 'Quit India' notices to 1,551 suspected Bangladeshi immigrants who illegally entered India and settled in coastal pockets of Kendrapara.

Sri Lankan navy arrest seven Indian fishermen for IMBL violation
RAMANATHAPURAM: The Sri Lankan Navy caught a fishing boat and arrested seven Indian fishermen hailing from Rameswaram and Thangachi Madam for IMBL violation in the late hours of Monday. The arrested Fishermen and their boat have been taken to the Mannar region in Sri Lanka for further legal proceedings. Fishermen associations in Ramanathapuram condemned the action. A source from the Fisheries department said that about 400 boats from Rameswaram ventured into the sea on Monday. A cluster of fishing boats were said to have entered Sri Lankan water, who were later chased away by the Sri Lankan navy patrol unit. One of the boats that remained in the Sri Lankan waters was caught by the Sri Lankan navy, and the seven fishermen who were on board were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy for IMBL violation. Sources said that the captured boat is owned by Arokiya Daniel of Thangachi Madam. Details of the arrested fishermen have been sent to official concern for further legal proceedings. The Fishermen association from Rameswaram condemned the arrest of Indian fishermen. On Sunday, about eight Rameswaram fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy, and on Tuesday another seven Fishermen were arrested by the Sri Lankan navy. They urged the union government to take action towards immediate action to release the fishermen and retrieve the seized boats.

'Anti-National Acts Routine Due To Lenient Courts': Allahabad HC Denies Bail For Pro-Pakistan Post
Last Updated: Ansar Ahmad Siddique had shared a video on Facebook on May 3, 2025, glorifying 'Pakistan Zindabad' and appealing to others to support Pakistanis. In a strongly worded order, the Allahabad High Court on June 26, 2025, refused to grant bail to a 62-year-old man accused of sharing a Facebook video allegedly promoting anti-national sentiments, stating that courts in India have become 'liberal and tolerant towards such acts of people with anti-national bent of mind". The bench of Justice Siddharth, presiding over the bail plea of accused Ansar Ahmad Siddique in a case registered under Sections 197 and 152 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), said that the conduct of the applicant amounted to an affront to the Constitution and national integrity. The FIR, registered at Chhatari Police Station in Bulandshahar district, alleged that Siddique had shared a video on Facebook on May 3, 2025, glorifying 'Pakistan Zindabad" and appealing to others to support Pakistanis. The prosecution further argued that this post came shortly after a terror attack in Pahalgam, where 26 Hindu men were killed, implying the applicant's sympathy towards terror acts motivated by religious extremism. Court observed that such acts not only hurt national sentiments but also threatened the sovereignty and unity of the country. Quoting Article 51-A of the Constitution, Justice Siddharth said every citizen is duty-bound to uphold the nation's integrity, its flag, anthem, and constitutional values. 'Clearly the act of the applicant is disrespectful to the Constitution and its ideals and also his act amounts to challenging the sovereignty of India and adversely affecting unity and integrity of India by sharing anti-social and anti-Indian post," the judge stated. Issuing a warning on the increasing frequency of such incidents, the court remarked, 'Commission of such offences is becoming routine affair in this country because the courts are liberal and tolerant towards such acts of people with anti national bent of mind. It is not a fit case for enlarging the applicant on bail at this stage". With these observations, the high court dismissed Siddique's bail plea and directed the trial court to expedite proceedings under Section 346 of the BNSS and Section 309 of the CrPC.
